《Descent of the Arcane》CHAPTER 1: The Tutorial 1

Caleb was smiling on his way to Maddy's house. She had just gotten a box of old tomes from her uncle's connection to the dark market. Caleb loved studying the occult with her. Even as kids they loved it. After growing up it turned into more of a hobby though.
Getting out of the car Caleb grabbed the pizza and rushed inside. When he crossed the doorway he saw Maddy already scanning the tomes through her computer. Setting the pizza down he washed his hands and wore gloves before young her. The tomes were written on clay tablets and a few copper tablets. After each had been scanned and searched for any hidden glyphs they stored the tomes before beginning the long job of translating the text. Thankfully Caleb had created a language algorithm that sped up a job taking others years or even decades to something taking only hours.
Caleb never understood how but he had an unnatural gift for languages. He could learn an entirely new language in less than two days and even beat a native speaker after a week. Currently he knew 53 languages and over a thousand dialects. Of his 53 languages 11 were dead languages. It was the gift that allowed him to create his algorithm on languages.
"Caleb look at this. This book mentions something called a Cradle of Life." Maddy got his attention. They were currently pouring over a few old times that they were having trouble translating.
"My tome mentioned something similar. Look here it seems to say 'the Great Rebirth shall transform the Cradle so it may join'. Unfortunately it doesn't mention what the Cradle will join nor exactly what the Rebirth is." Caleb replied while looking at the gorgeous 5'3" red haired woman next to him. Most people found it strange seeing the two together. Caleb was 6 foot had light brown hair and a bit of a stomach pouch if he was going to be honest though he was somewhat well muscled while Maddy looked like a model who worked out almost religiously. While Maddy had informed a few friends that Caleb was dangerous and new martial arts most found it hard to believe.

Caleb was your average office worker in most ways. He went to work did his job to the best of his abilities, before going home. The thing that set him apart was his fascination with the occult and anything tying into magic. Now, he realized that it was all fake but a part of him yearned for a world were it was real. A world of adventure and growth. Maybe he should have been more careful of what he asked for.
There was a sound like cloth ripping but it was louder than the sound of artillery fire. This was soon followed by a sound like rumbling thunder. At this point a blue glowing panel appeared before Caleb.
WORLD JOINING THE MULTIVERSE!
ALL SAPIENT CREATURES RELOCATED TO THE TUTORIAL
CHILDREN IN THE FIRST 5% OF LIFESPAN MOVED TO THE TEMPLE OF THE GODS UNTIL THEY RECEIVE A CLASS AT LEVEL 10
ALL SICK OR INFIRM HEALED ALL AGED PEOPLE RETURNED TO 30-40% OF LIFESPAN
Caleb's vision blurred before completely turning black. Moments later he awoke along with 50 other people standing in a glade. The second thing he noticed was that there was weapons and armor piled into the center of the group of people. The gear looked like medieval armour and cold weapons. At this moment Caleb heard words in his mind while another blue panel appeared in front of his vision.
YOU ARE NOW IN THE TUTORIAL
YOUR SYSTEM HAS BEEN ACTIVATED
THE MULTIVERSE IS A PLACE OF WAR & DESTRUCTION AS WELL AS LIFE & CREATION
ONLY THE STRONG SHALL PREVAIL
WALK YOUR OWN PATH OR FOLLOW THE PATH OF ANOTHER BUT KNOW THAT EACH HAS ITS GIFTS AND TRIALS
THE CHOICES AND ACTIONS YOU MAKE SHALL DETERMINE YOUR PATH
Caleb hearing and seeing this withdrew into his mind to quickly think. During this time a few of the others seemed to loose themselves to grief and anger at the situation they found themselves in. After a few minutes Caleb opened his eyes and said a few different words allowed trying to see if it got a reaction: "SYSTEM", "SCAN", "SELF-SCAN", "STATUS". The final phrase seemed to work as another panel appeared.

Looking over his status page the first thing he did was insert his name, Caleb Fulmen. Secondly he tried to look at what each section meant unfortunately most shared nothing. He did find out the classes and professions could be gained at level 10. The (G) beside human meant he was a completely un-evolved human which would change when he reached level 10. The only other thing he found out was what the titles where and the bonus for being human.
HUMAN(G): +1 ALL STATS, +10 FREE STAT POINTS PER LEVEL. +15% EXP GAIN.
FORERUNNER OF EARTH: +20% EXP GAIN

PRODIGIOUS LINGUIST: YOU HAVE MASTERED MORE THAN 25 DISTINCT LANGUAGES THROUGH YOUR OWN EFFORTS. +5 TO ALL MIND STATS
After going over all the titles Caleb decided to go and equip the gear. The system mentioned war and destruction and with those weapons on the ground it was obvious that this world was dangerous.
A few people had the same thoughts and a few were already there. Caleb decided on a leather armour that had a plate of some kind of metal over the heart and kidneys. Second he grabbed a slightly curved single edged shortsword strapping it to his left hip. He also decided on grabbing a long dagger after seeing one man strap it to his boot. While following his example he noticed one kid picked up a blue stick. A couple seconds later said stick fired a blue ball that exploded on a tree grabbing everyone's attention.
Looking closely Caleb heard a "ding" sound in the back of his mind.
**DING** Skill acquired; INSPECT: Allows user to inspect anything non-sapient. Scales off of wisdom and intelligence.
Inferior Wand:
Quality: Inferior
Durability: 10/10
Enchantment: Mana bolt causes damage proportional to intelligence and wisdom stat.
Multiple people made exclamations before rushing to grab a wand as well. Caleb also grabbed one though he first inspected his other gear.

" It seems like all this gear is trash" Caleb thought. Without much time to ponder this a 10 foot tall bulky man suddenly appeared in the clearing.
"I am Baltar, an S-grade giant. I will inform you of a few things about this Tutorial and you may each ask one question, if I am allowed I will answer." The giant said in a deep yet melodic voice. "Firstly every human from earth and all other races from the other planets in the Cradle of Life have been sent to a Tutorial. Each Tutorial is unique but there are only 5 basic types; 'QUEST', 'SURVIVAL', 'CRAFTING', 'TRAINING', and 'DEFENSE'. Each Tutorial has their own benefit, the one thing they all have in common is you can decide to sit out the rest of the Tutorial after receiving either a class or profession. Doing so would be shortsighted and stupid though. I will only go over yours which is of the 'QUEST' archetype. Quest type Tutorials are the most balanced."

What Was Lost Outside Time
What happens to a mind, subjected to an infinite span of time? What remains, when it is taken out again? This is the story of an individual reborn after such time has passed that nothing remains of what it was; an individual who must learn once again what it is to be, beginning with awareness of the idea of awareness, and growing from there; from awareness of self, to awareness of others, to awareness of society, and on. This is the story of a mind; growing, learning, adapting, and becoming more. -- Currently the first three chapters are - well, kind of experimental. I both like and hate these; they were a pain to write, and I'm told by at least one person that they're painful to get through, but I think something like them is necessary to set one of the basic ideas about the way the story is written. It gets slightly more normal after that, the first arc of the story is rather "battle school", and I think I may need to go back and edit it - the characterization didn't end up working out as well as I had originally hoped, unfortunately, and ended up rather weak to my eye. I may go back and add a sub-plot or two, depending on how well I can handle the intended perspective shift of the second arc. -- Currently on hiatus, in case that wasn't obvious. I'm debating between rewriting large portions of what I've already written, and just finishing out the story, but either way, I don't actually have a clear idea of what I want to do right now. If I'm still feeling the same way in a few months I'll put a chapter up explaining where the story was going, maybe, so the people who have enjoyed it can know where the story was intended to go, and close this out.
