《The Demon Lord who wished to be a Hero》Chapter 15 - What Have I done...?

The survivors are all infront of me. Only 63 goblins survived the onslaught out of the few hundred we had. The amount of cretins that died here do not help with the dull throbbing pain deep in my chest.

Nibbit and the others stand off to the side as they allow the mass of goblins staying right in front of me. The tension is palpable. The depression and sorrow creeps into our bones and try to drag us down into the ground to join the fallen. The eyes of the frightened and hopeless hold little light as if they are waiting for a soft gust of wind to put them out.

There is only one pair of eyes in the crowd that has hope and expectations. It was from a child who I played with on the first day I was in the village. Even through everything that happened he still looks at me with hope.

I exhale a breath I didn’t know I was holding. I straighten my back, standing tall, and speak. “My people! Tonight there was a catastrophic event, harming everyone physically, mentally and emotionally. I am grieved that I was not here when you needed me the most until it was to late!”

I gulp, steeling my gaze and breathing slowly. “I am sorry I was not more useful to you all. For I let this horrendous and deplorable act from those cretins to happen to you all… We lost… To many, even losing a single one of you breaks my heart, but for…” I close my eyes and grit my teeth in self loathing.

“I have not been here long but I have grown attached to you all. Such caring and innocent people, not knowing the horrors of what is out there. To be attacked from the darkness without a shred of mercy but with glee and sadistic joy.” I hiss out with venomous hate.

“To have one taken from you is heart wrenching, but to watch it happen by someone doing it happily is nothing but a tragedy and the work of the soulless. Those cretins are nothing but vile creatures that hold no sympathy but only the fantasy of their own sins and pleasure.” Opening my eyes I growl.

“I am going to strike back and end their pathetic and cancerous existence upon this world. To this I wish to know if you will join me. For vengeance for your loved ones, the ones this world has forsaken. Will you join me!?!” I Shout out!

My ears are instantly bombarded and deafened by the tidal wave of noise that shakes the entire surroundings. Their yelling sways the trees, the ground quivers from the raw energy. There is no looks of mercy, sadness or despair on their faces anymore. Only rage and the thirst for vengeance.

We marched through the forest. Every goblin given a weapon they could carry and any makeshift armour we scavenged. I raised all of the cretin’s corpses within the village. Gaining over 12 Skeleton mages, 45 Dullahans, 20 Ravagers which are zombie rouges and 5 Abominations. Then there is the 80 Honoured Death Knights which are coming with us.

I turned the first Death Knight I met into my General, and he then turned Erlin into a Lieutenant to my amusement and Erlin’s anger. He also turned a four armed Ravager into a Lieutenant, as well as the biggest Abomination, and the Dullahan with the biggest sword and shield.

We did not touch a single goblin corpse as we will properly bury them once we come back victorious…

Then there was the broken creature we brought with us. To make it watch as we destroy what it wished to protect.

By the end of the night there will be nothing left of the town but ash and death.

The march is quiet. Only the whistle of the wind, the sounds of our feet hitting the hard ground. Not even the howling of the wolves can be heard as if they themselves are mourning.

I wear my armour, wield my scythe tightly and with purpose. My blades seeth with an unquenchable thirst. Spells are constantly in my mind, deciding on which ones will come at my beck and call when the time is nigh.

Adrenaline fills me as we march. Excitement for bloodshed slowly creeps up which will become a crescendo when we meet the cretin’s hive.

It not long past midnight once we exit the forest. The moon not long past the highest point. The darkness only slightly gives away to the soft glow of the crescent shaped moon. It’s almost a welcomed sight from few days without seeing it nor the sun.

I motion to Sek who is the Death Knight General, over to me. His movements fluid and the air around him feels of decay and authority. He kneels in front of me, his claymore within the ground and his hands on the handle.

“What do you wish for me Milord, your will is my command.” His voice gravely and gruff. Looking only at his blade and my feet, not looking up at all.

I nod my head, feeling a weird fiery sensation within the pit of my chest and stomach. Ignore it and respond. “I need you to get everyone to prevent anyone from exiting the town and escaping. If you see anyone escaping the town… Kill them.”

“I understand milord. And what shall you be doing? Will you be entering the town by yourself?” He looks up at me. I almost sense defiance coming from him when he asks me if I’m entering alone.

I turn away and start walking towards the gate of the town. “Yes I am. Make sure no one escapes alive Sek. I will not need any protection. They will need protection from me.”

All I hear is a ‘Yes Milord’ as I continue my walk to the town’s inhabitants execution.

I shall burn this fucking place to the ground. Only then will my rage be quilled and the vengeance for the damned of my village be free.

There is only two guards at the wooden gate. Both looking bored and unattentive. Their grips on their spears clearly loose and useless if they didn’t get a chance to notice something wrong and tighten it.

Sadly for them they did not as two, 3 meter long nightmare spears impaled them and sent them pinned against the gate. Blood sprayed from their wound and mouth. The last things they saw was me coming closer and relieving them of their heads.

With only a leisurely swing of my scythe, the wooden gate is in half, allowing me to walk through unperturbed. I am greeted to two surprised guards who are also quickly cut in half spilling their entrails onto the ground. One for some reason did not die and starts to scream, but is ended shortly when I cave his skull in with my heel.

I toss a Hellfire grenade at the gate and start firing Hellfire balls at the buildings. By the time the grenade went off preventing anyone from escaping that way via Magma pool and hellfire burning the stone walls. I have sent over 10 houses ablaze with the black, ever consuming flames.

Everything I see I set ablaze with hellfire. Be it a stone house, a wooden house, a tree, animal or cretin. All around me I hear the cackling of hellfire. There is no screaming as the heat of the fire consumes them before they can act.

I walk through the flames as they lick me, warming me up in their smelting embrace. It’s only after several minutes that I start to hear screams across the town. All about the fire and needing to escape.

I finally see a group of guards running with some cretins. They notice me when I emerge from the flames of hell. Their reaction is truly something to behold. The way their faces twisted when I sent a hellfire grenade at them was divine.

The fools believe they can escape but there is no escape from my flames. They shall all become fuel for it’s hunger.

Every street I pass I put up a greater hellfire wall preventing anyone from escape that way. Even though I doubt they would try to bypass me or my trail of flames.

I reach the Magic institute. I get a brief flashback about Prince of Chaos. That seemed so long ago for some reason. Filling me with a sense of melancholy, which feeds in to my anger.

I point towards the institute and imagine a spell from an old game I used to play as a child. After sending more then about 75% of my mana I suppose. A giant pillar of flames erupts from the institute, completely engulfing it. It towered into the sky acting as a beacon of my wrath.

I feel somewhat drained but it quickly goes away as I start moving towards the next target for my burning hatred.

With my long strides I reach the barracks. Instead of torching it first, lets see what is inside. My blood is pumping and and my scythe is giving a off a sense of eagerness to taste blood. Is it sentient…?

It doesn’t matter right now. As I reach the reinforced iron door I use nightmare cloak, using the added strength to punch through the door. Easily blasting it away and smashing into someone behind it. All that is left of the person is the giant bloody splat mark on the wall.

There's groups of cretins and the guards. It seems they were holding up in here and going to try to weather the fire storm. Poor decision for them and a jackpot for me.

With the wave of my hand, several nightmare spear shootout impaling sometimes more than one person on each spear. Their cries music to my ears as the raging fire outside compliment them.

The survivors of the barrage do not stand idly. They either go for cover, go further into the barracks or charge at me if they have weapons. The fools do not know there is no hope, nor escape from death.

I slice through them like a farmer does with wheat. They collapse onto the ground in heaps. As I pass them I tap them with my blade and cloak, combusting them with Pyro’s touch.

A quick extermination. Some hid beneath beds, in closets. One even in a chest. They can not escape. Will not escape.

I left the best for last. Only the manor is left everywhere else is burning down or already burnt down to the ground leaving nothing but ash or a pool of melted rock.

With the rest of my mana, I cast the same spell I did on the magic institute. Watching as the large manor about the size of a city block is but a giant pyre. I drop to my knees in weakness. The lack of mana leaving with a horrible chill on the inside, while on the outside I am being bathed with the heat of hellfire.

I just stay there. Staring at the giant pyre. Watching the flames dance and twirl throughout the night sky. Beauty in destruction.

After snapping myself out of my stupor I start to trudge towards an exit only to almost trip on something. I look down to see something popping out of a mound of ash.

I pick it up to reveal it to be a worn out… Teddy bear…?

The thing is missing an arm and button eye but seems to be in still good condition. Almost like the fire never happened. Not a single part of it is singed or burnt..

When I turn it over I see some embroidery saying… ‘To our lovely sweet Josey. Love Mommy & Daddy’...

Ugh… I don’t know what to say about this… What was I thinking all this time… Over a thousand died by my hands… Wait, what was that about me eating someone!?

Just getting worse and worst… Burning people is supposedly one of the worst ways to go. However from what I see from hellfire it kills quickly… Question is does it ravage their soul like in mythology? Are they in constant endless pain now for all eternally!?

I know I killed people before, but they were trying to kill me. Almost all of these people didn’t even know I existed, but I just ended their lives. Mother and father would probably be proud, but… Do I really want to be like them…?

“Are you just going to stay like that or should I leave?” I look up to see a tall slender women in a business suit. Balance?

I quickly get up and brush off all the dust I can. Sadly the blood on me is mixed with the ash, it just gets smeared all over… “I-I’m sorry, It’s just that I’m…” I sigh, trying to stop my body from quaking.

She gives a light chuckle, putting her hand to her mouth. “And to think I was going to try to make you feel bad about what you did. It seems I don’t need to do that, do I?”

I shake my head weakly. Unconsciously I look back at the teddy bear.

“You caused a huge stir upstairs you know.” She says with a sigh. “The whole ‘Light’ Pantheon are… Saying upset is to ‘light’ of a word, hehe…” She jokes but I don’t respond.

“Ahem… Well I think th-” Balance begins before she is interrupted by a loud obnoxious laughter coming from my left. Don’t tell me…

“You made quite a splash My Champion, Hahhahahaha! I knew picking you would be the right choice!” I feel an arm going around my shoulder and I’m faced with the prince. Shit.

Unlike Balance who looks the same, the prince looks more… Chaotic. His clothing always changing from one thing to another. Every article a mix match of other colours or brands or types. It gives me an headache just from looking at it. He has the same old man face however which is… I don’t know how to feel about it.

“Child, I do not believe this is a joking matter.” Balance growls at the Prince. “The young Demon Lord here, has just made an enemy of the whole light side of the Pantheon. This is not looking good for him.”

“Pfft! Like he has to care about that! I was just with Velion and the other Dark Pantheon Gods and Goddesses.Their having a huge party with what My Champion, just did! He won’t have to worry as the Dark Pantheon will have his back if he asks for it.” I feel a nudge. “Right Champion?” Please stop looking at me like that, old man…

“You don’t even know how to properly deal with a champion!” Balance yells at him. “You didn’t tell him about the alignment system or anything else did you?”

The Prince shrinks back revolted. “Responsability, disgusting! Why would I do such a thing when he can find out the old natural and chaotic way!”

I sigh. I wonder if all the gods and goddesses are like this…

“Balance,” I say “could you take me in for the second alignment?”

They both stop arguing and look at me in shock. What did I say?

“You want me to be your Patron?” Balance asks, which I nod in response. She giggles and smiles. Uhmm… Was this the right decision?

“Well if you want me to, I can’t really decline could I? Expeccially considering the other options you have.” She smiled brightly at me.

“Thank you, Balance!” I bow to her to the prince’s dismay, his frown evidence to this.

“Call me Big Sister~” What. She wasn’t this friendly last time we chatted right?

Then there is the Prince gagging over there. Two deities acting like child in a burnt down town with the arsonist… What a sight…

“Well considering I’m your Patron I should be giving you a gift now shouldn’t I..?” She glares at the Prince. “Please take this ring. I believe this will help you in the future.” She takes out a magnificent ring made out of onyx and what seems to be an amethyst on it.

“Ah, thank you…” I try to take the ring but she won’t let it go. I look up at her face to see a frown. “Big sister?” She smiles and lets go after I say that. Lord help me. My face can scare away everyone but monsters and deities.

“Hmph. I won’t be outdone, as he is my Champion, I shall also give him a gift. However unlike you trying to wed the youngster. I will give him a useful gift!” He laughs as he takes out a blank mask. It’s just a blank white mask with no facial features, holes to look out of or breath from.

He hands me it. It feels wet. Almost slimey. Weird.

“This mask is called ‘A Thousand Lives’, when wearing it, it can completely change how you look, sound and your aura if someone was to try to hunt you down that way. Now with that said, I must go. May you stay safe Champion, or not.” He shrugs and then just… Disappears in an actual cloud of smoke. Even a few tiny fireworks go off…

I look over to Balance to see her shaking her head in disappointment. “To see, this is what our kind has become…”

She looks to me and gently smiles. “Don’t beat yourself up Zxel. This is how the world is. You will find your way. Keep your people safe. As long as you don’t enjoy such acts like this and try your best to help people, I will accept being your Patron.” With that said she also disappears.

Leaving me, alone.

What a fucked night.
