《The Demon Lord who wished to be a Hero》Chapter Three - The Barracks and the Magic Instiitute

“Gahh.. What happened..” I open my eyes, seeing two bright lights in the sky. I cover my eyes with my hand. Are those the suns in the game? I can just imagine them being fireballs being shot at me right now to give me a rude awaking but something like that wouldn’t happen when I just spawned..Right?
Not taking that chance! I roll sideways and jump up to realize! It’s just the suns, and people are looking at me funny now..
Sigh.. What shall I do now.. Wait, I didn’t pick to be either a Demon Lord or a Sub race! but since they're not attacking me right now and saying bur- wait, can you burn a demon? Wouldn’t they enjoy burning.. Never mind they would just cut me up but they aren’t..
I really should've made sure everything was A-OK before I left.. Perhaps I should of took the tutorial and not skipped it.. Sigh
Might as well check my status right now to see what I am. “Status!” I say and a floating blue table appears in front of me.
Name Zxel Alvichia Level 1 Race Demon Lord [Sub Race Human] Gender/Sex Male Class Demon Lord Sub-Class None Titles "The Idiot who skipped the Tutorial" Magical Affinities ??? Strength 10 [30] Endurance 10 [30] Agility 10 [30 Dexterity 10 [30] Intelligence 10 [30 Wisdom 10 [30] Charm 0 [0] Luck 0 [0]
Okay, so it seems I am a sub race of Human, that's good. What's with the Title though! I do regret skipping the tutorial but really?! hopefully no one can see this, and hopefully I’m not alone.. What's with my Charm and Luck! Okay that's also reasonable…
The only thing that confuses me is about the Magical affinities, will it give me a boost in certain fields of magic or something? I sigh and start rubbing my temple, I fucked up hard..
I really should get more information for the position I'm in right now and perhaps get a quest.
I start walking towards the first person I see, which is a muscular middle aged man holding a crate. Hopefully he can answer my questions or better yet, give me a quest to help him transport the crate!
“Hello sir! May I help you with that?” I give him the most friendly smile I could muster, he can’t see it through, the crates in the way. “I would really appreciate that, I’m assuming you would want something in return however?” He says and he tries to get a look at my face.
“No! I’m doing this out of the kindness of my heart! However I would appreciate it if you could answer some of my questions perhaps?” I inquire, which he responds, “Sure! if it’s only information I could definitely h-!?” He notices my smile and drops the crate smashing on the ground, releasing all the apples in its captivity.
This Is getting old.. Maybe I should wear a mask, I bet I would get more friendly reactions.. He is trying to form words and sweating pretty profusely right now.
“Uhm.. Do you need help with the apples anymore?” I ask which he shakes his head and says “No no no! I-I’m good! thank you t-trying to help anyways!” He starts waving his hands around trying to drive his point.
“Okay than.. Can you give me some information still?” I ask the poor guy which he forms a terrified smile “Y-yes!” and he whispers “Don’t hurt me..”, This is getting ridiculous..
“Okay then, what town are we in? Where can I learn Magic swordplay? What guilds is there and where could I find them? And thank you for your help.”
I smile at him and he quickly replies. “This is the town of Principium, you can learn Magic Swordsmanship at the Capital. Gulp..” He’s shivering now and fixing his shirt collar. I look behind me to find nothing and back to him which he then continues.
“B-but! You can learn swordsmanship at the training grounds at the barracks and magic at the town's Magic Institute! There is also a Rogue Guild, Adventurers Guild, Merchants Guild and like I said the Institute which you can find in the south of town.” He says and starts making a begging motion to me. I sigh stepping out of his way and he starts running away leaving the apples behind.
He moves pretty fast like a monster was behind him and about to slaughter him for food. Meh, not my problem, I shrug and start picking up the apples and they instantly disappear when I touch them.. I’m not even going to waste my time..
I stand up, brushing myself off and say “What shall I do now. Sigh, it seems I can’t learn some Magic Swordplay unless I go to capital which I can but it would take god knows how long to reach it.. So I guess I will just go to the barracks first and learn some positions and then head towards the institute.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It took me half an hour of wandering around, trying to ask people where the barracks is, which they all ran away after giving me a pathetic excuse why they couldn’t answer or were to busy. Soon enough guards came and asked me to stop 'harassing' the towns folk.. They however were kind enough to point me in the right direction but they looked quite suspicious of me.
The barracks looked like a really old fort, it had stone brick walls and towers with bastions. there was some cracks in it , but only a skilled rogue could climb their way up the walls. I reached the entrance of the barracks which had an iron gate with two guards, well guarding it.
The two guards are wearing traditional iron armour, such as boots, a chest plate, helmet, gloves, greaves and they each held an Halberd. The only difference from the two, was one is short while the other was tall. I wonder if the small one has a napoleon complex.
“Uhm, I am here to enter the training field? Do I need a pass or something?” I ask a little unsure which the tall one answers, “Not at all laddie, we just like the gate closed for some reason, right Reggie?” The tall guard looks at the small guard whose name is Reggie it seems.
“Right! It’s force of habit, we will have it open for you in a jiffy!” He salutes and yells something I don’t even want to repeat or think about and the gate slowly goes up. “Thanks, for the help” I smiles wryly at them which they nod in return.
“Hope You enjoy the field Laddie.” “Make sure you don’t break anything” The two say when I start walking through the gate, which instantly slams shut as I pass through.
Why does It feel like I just entered a prison? Walls all around me, closed gate with guards, it's like I’m walking towards my execution.
I continue on towards the field which when I exit the fort shows a giant training field around the size of three Football fields. There are tons of people [NPCs] and I think players training on it with guards drilling them, training alone or with a partner. There is a part of the field that have training dummies where people test their skills or abilities. A burly man even cleaved several in one move of his sword!

So what shall I do? It’s not like I have a weapon, unless it's in my Demon lord set which would be problematic if I take it out now. Maybe I should just watch some of the soldiers positions and mimic them when I’m outside of the city? Yeah, that's what I will do, now to find a suitable target..
I looked around the field until I saw a promising target who seems to be a young adult, probably about my age with shiny silver armour, could also be mithril, hell if I know. He has good posture and stances from what I saw, he's perfect!
I’m just going to make sure to watch where he places his legs for their position. Maybe I will get a skill by watching it or mimicking it when I try it out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Silver Knight POV]
My name is Arthur King, the son of the count who rules the town of Principium. I usually go to the barracks everyday to train at the training fields to become a full fledged Knight and to be able to protect my people of the town when I inherit it.
This day started like any other besides that people started appearing out of thin air on the streets! I probably would have attacked them as soon as I saw this as well as the guards if not for the warning we all have received years ago about people that would be appearing out of nowhere and being ignorant of this world's common sense. However it could just be a ruse to let our guard down..
Who warned us of this however? Some bald dude calling himself the Pope of Jackel, no one actually believed that old coot except his zealous followers. It seems like he was right.. For once.
Out of all the gods of the world, Jackel is the least popular god mainly due to the fact no one has ever seen him throughout history or seen any miracles he has done.
We have records of every other god or goddess, such as when they have been sighted, where, what they did and etc. Anyways, I’m not here to talk about this world’s religion, that would be boring.
Continuing on my way towards the training field I get interrupted several times by these 'Travelers' which start calling me an NPC? what does that even Mean?! And when I ask them they just brush me off and ask for my name, which they than laugh at me when I tell them!
If I wasn’t such a good and calm person I would of had them in the stocks or executed for their abherant behavior, hmph.. Than they started asking for quests which I than replied with “Do you mind to screw off?” Their facial expressions were hilarious, however I got slapped by a female “Traveler” for the response.
I finally got to the gate of the Barracks where the two guards which are Reggie and Steven who were trying not to laugh at the bright red handprint that covered half of my face. Who will be laughing when I deduct your monthly wage!
It was beautiful when I got to the field, the sound of metal on metal, the noise of arrows being fired, and the grunts of people sparring.
I started my stretching, got my weapon called Excali, a weak long sword that was given to me by a water nymph. It’s rank not even above common, but it's a good training weapon nonetheless.
As I got in my stance, I felt a shiver down my spine as I get this eerie feeling of someone .. Staring at me.. It’s normal for people to stare at you, to watch and mimic you if you're as talented as me in swordplay, however this felt.. Dangerous.. Like a demon is looking into my soul and about to plunk it out from the shadows.
Slowly I turn around and notice, HIM, staring at me, or more accurately my lower body..
Just staring at me menencingly!
No matter what I do, different stance, move to a different area, he continues to watch my lower body with that horrible gaze! I can actually feel myself sweating! When will this end!?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Zxel Alvichia POV]
I stared at him for half an hour before I think I memorized his stances. For some strange reason he was always looking over in my direction with weird expressions.. I wonder if he is okay.
I leave the field and fort, continuing to my second target. The magical Institute in this town. I hope I will be able to find out my magical affinity there, I don’t want to do some crazy task to find out, such as finding a crystal ball to tell me.
Soon enough I reach the institute, it looks like a university campus, walled off with iron bars on the top, gate for an entrance. Made out of stone bricks like the barracks, has windows unlike the barracks, statues and floating crystals that glow different colours!
For some reason their is no guards, is it because it’s not like the barracks? Or does it have it’s own special guardians, perhaps golems or elementals?
I pass through the gate which, surprise surprise, nothing happ-!? I just got pushed out of the institute by a strong ass gust of wind! I run in this time and I get shot out again, This isn’t fair!
“Who or what is stopping me from entering this damn place! I can just go to a different Magic Institute! I don’t need this kind of treatment!” I yell and start walking away grumbling. I hear a panicked voice shortly after and an old man which has a hunched back, brown eyes and long white beard that almost reaches the ground appears in front of me.
“Stop! I was just kidding! It’s just so fun to see you 'Travelers' get pissed off, by not being able to enter. They usually are more patient and keep trying to enter however, unlike you, who gave up so quickly..” He muses to himself, stroking his beard.
He shakes his head and points his boney finger to me saying “So why did you come here Sonny? To learn the Arcane arts? Throw magical spells willy nilly or to unravel the mystery of the universe?” he smiles crookedly.
Let's see if I can get some payback on him.. “Yes, I came to learn the arcane arts, elder one..” I say while bowing. I think I saw a vein bulge on his bald head when I said that, how do you like to get teased too old man..
“Well that’s good. Is there anything you want specifically to learn?” He asks, putting his arms to his side and says. “I am the only Sorcerer within a hundred miles! I am also the headmaster of this institute, Ha! I doubt anyone else is more qualified to answer it” He grins and crosses his arms, puffing out his chest.
“So you can probably answer any of my question?” I inquire which he responds while stroking his beard again “I did just say that youngster.. Also, what's with your eyes? They look.. Weird” he's staring me right in my eyes, it’s making me uncomfortable..
“It’s uhm.. I was just born with it sir.. But my question..” He snaps out of his trance and nods his head and says “What is it?”
“I was wondering what my Magical Affinities are and how to cast spells. Can you help me with that?” I ask excitedly, if he answers this, I will be able to probably shoot out fireballs everywhere or flying magical scythes at my doomed enemies hahaha!
“I would love to! however you will need to join the class that I am teaching in about..” He checks his a watch that almost looks identical from my world besides it glowing light blue. “about five minutes, which I should really hurry up to! However if you would like to join please follow me!” He says with a smile, and starts doing backflips before hobbling away!
“Hey wait up!” I yell following him into the institute. Once we entered the building it was very well furnished. Red velvet rugs, oak furniture, glass chandeliers and lots of floating crystals for light sources!
We go down several hallways passing portraits of old geezers in fancy looking cloths with snobby attitudes. It says under them their name, rank and what element or elements they specialized in.
Another thing they all had in common was yellow teeth and being bald, some of the plaques even said “Professional Hermits” before entering the institute. Most of them had specialized with one of the four elements, it was rarer to see one that wasn’t and even rarer if they had more than one.
While we were walking towards our destination I also noticed that everyone we saw made sure to avoid the both of us, and it’s not just because I’m here. I’ve seen everyone have one look at the “Headmaster” then turn tail and run..
“Ahh, headmaster..?” I ask, he turns around and says rather annoyed “What is it? We need to hurry up before we’re late!” I than ask “Sorry but, why does everyone run away when they see you in the halls?” I smile wryly.
“Oh, that's because I have been known to “explode” when I get upset” he says while smiling at me which he then continues on his way. What does he mean explode… Please god please tell me the doesn't know any explosive spells, it would be like holding a ticking time bomb..
He stops in front of two large decorated doors which he pushes open. He casts a few spells under his breath where fog appears and little fireworks go off. He continues to walk through the fog with his arms out loudly stating “Your headmaster has arrived my pupils, HAHAHAHA!”.
Once the fog disperses I notice the room is organized like a seminar hall or theatre hall, I also notice some people’s faces turning pale once they hear or see the Headmaster, one even bolts out of their seat running away. However as soon as he reaches one of the exits two suits of armors that are guarding them, awaken and drag them back to their seats.
I continue towards the stage with the headmaster until he motions for me to take a seat in the empty front row, which I obliged reluctantly, I think I even gotten a few looks of pity and someone whispering they will pray for my safety..
I look around the hall in my seat while the headmaster climbs up onto the stage looking at his watch. What i noticed before he started talking is, there's several other players in the room as well, however they are in parties it seems.
I wonder where Alexander is… Sigh, he’s probably with a party with a bunch of women or something.
“Okay everyone! If you still don’t know me by what I said and my entrance, I am the Headmaster of the Institute and your teacher for this class of Introduction Magic and Affinities!” he says while going behind the stage to grab a chalk table.
“My name is, Reginald Ulcer. I would like to ask you all, what do you know about magic and Magical Affinities?” He looks curiously and crosses his arms looking to the crowd.
One person stands up to talk but the Headmaster laughs and yells at them “Like You would be in this class if you knew anything!” The student blushes and sits down covering their face while their neighbor tries to comfort them.
“Magic is the usage of Mana, like conjuring spells, buffs or enchanting items. Mana is usually called the life blood of mage’s, without it we are just people wearing robes and waving our hands around yelling cool spells that do nothing” He says, walking back and forth on the stage.
He continues on, “Affinities is a Mage’s specialty for a certain element field such as a Fire affinity or water affinity. With those affinities you would be able to cast spells that are associated with them with less Mana cost and more strength. You will also learn, memorize and perhaps create spells far easier than someone without that affinity.” He starts writing this on the chalkboard.
“For you Travelers, you probably have noticed by now that when you checked your ‘Status’, it doesn't show you your affinity or affinities , I have an orb with me today that will read out your affinities and it should allow you to see them on your ‘Status” afterwards” Oh god when will this end! this has only been a few minutes but I want it to end!
“Now before we do this I would like to ask someone in the audience if anyone knows the ‘Forbidden’ affinities that if you are caught using or have may get you in a heap of shit? I promise I won’t laugh at you if you get them incorrect” he reassures and waits for any victims volunteers.
Some people raise their hands and the headmaster picks on person which- oh my god it's a Loli mage! She’s about 4’8’ ft. tall with long blue hair with yellow streaks that reach up to the middle of her back, little traditional witch hat, petite nose and cheerful.. Blood red eyes?
Well I’m not going to dwell on that.. “The Forbidden Affinities are, Necro, Soul, Blood, Bio, Nightmare, Ento and I think there a few others I’m missing” she says and bows, a lot of the audience started cheering and doing wolf whistles while she blushes and takes a seat.
“Very nice, you did a fine job naming them. You got most of them, however, the ones you missed was Death, Abyssal, Void and Time. Anyways, Let's begin checking out your affinities shall we!” He says smiling, clapping his hands and rubbing them together.
Slowly the audience trickle up onto the stage to get their affinities read. Mostly everyone got one or two, whoever got three was called a prodigy by the headmaster and a genius if they got four.
If You want to know, the Loli was called a prodigy by having the Water, lightning and blood affinity. She was warned however not to practice Bloodmancy or she will be branded as an outlaw and hunted down.
It’s finally my turn, the headmaster is even looking at me with an expectant gaze of greatness.. The Stare! Why does he expect great things of me?! Or is that actually a stare of thinking I will fuck up real bad..
I put my hand on the surface on the pale crystal orb and it says..

Beyond the Horizon's Eye
It is less than two weeks after the event known as the Flux Causality, and two days after the Grand Council has put forth the edict demanding the immediate retrieval and deletion of all Stringhoppers. Finding such Travelers, however, is proving more difficult than expected. A young boy and his sister find themselves violently taken from their world to another, and soon thereafter are forcibly separated. Now sold into slavery, the young man must find not only a reason to survive but a purpose to carry him home. The journey has just begun, and the hardest step is always the first one. ~ This is my attempt at both the Xianxia/Wuxia and Portal/Isekai genre of fiction that I love, and the means to provide a story set in such guidelines, while distancing myself from some of the more common tropes. I do hope you enjoy the story I shall endeavor to tell. ~ Average post between 1000 - 3000 words. This is a work in progress, and will be edited and adjusted over time. If you’re interested in something a bit more GameLIT, you might want to check out my second story on Royal Road, “The Dawnfire Archives”. My newest story is a combination of both genres, but with a female main character at the helm. Feel free to check out "The Card Thief of Culnivar"!
