《Limits》Chapter 38: Turtle the Predator

The next day, I waited for Grond to leave the Workshop again. When he did, I retrieved one on my moulds, and melted the leftovers I had. After poring that into the mould, I waited a bit for it to cool down, then submerged it in water. When the mould was warm to touch, I broke it open, to retrieve my new dagger. 'It still needs polishing, and sharpening. But other than that, is looks great' I thought. I went straight to the grindstone, and worked on my dagger. A while later, I gave it an edge, and grinded off any imperfections that resulted due to me using a mould. The next step was polishing it. There was a basin with special sand inside the workshop. The basin was large, and could fit a sword or two. I dropped my dagger inside, then wore protective gloves. The next step was easy and not easy at the same time. I had to use the sand inside the basin, to wash the dagger. In reality, I just had to moved the dagger inside the sand, while scratching it with my hands. Hence the gloves. It took me a while, a lot more than I imagined. Before I could finish, I had to stop. Grond would return soon, and I didn't want him to notice what I was doing. I hid the dagger for later, and returned to work. Right on cue, Grond returned just as I was melting the Ore for my next Ingot. He went to work in silence as usual. With my work done, I returned to the pond. It was still there, and the water inside was clear now. 'Finally, I can catch some of those fishes, and release them inside the pond. With that, I can view them every day... I still need that predator though' I thought. First thing first, I needed the fishes. I cast my net into the river, and waited for the fishes to approach. That was the easy part. I had to figure out, which fishes had that ability. For that I needed a predator. I looked further up the river, and found a predatorial fish that fed on them. I tried manipulating it, so that it would swim downstream. For that, I used pebbles. Every time it went the wrong way, I threw a pebble at it. This took me a while, but the predatorial fish made its way downstream towards my net. When it was close enough to the school of fishes, I stopped throwing the pebbles, and prepared to pull the net. My net was larger this time. I had more time to make it, and I wasn't doing it for food either. When the predatorial fish spotted the school, it slowly creeped up to them. Suddenly, it sped up chasing the fishes in front of it. The fishes who could camouflage, did that as soon as they sensed something. A few of them entered my net, and I pulled. I caught five fishes in total, two of them possessed that ability to reflect light. I placed the caught fishes inside the pond, and went back to the river. I needed at least two or three more of them. So far the ratio in my pool was 60-40, due to three of them being normal, and two of them with that ability. I casted my net again, and repeated the same process a few times. When my pool contained five fishes with the ability to reflect light. I stopped fishing. I also had five fishes with no ability to reflect light. Therefore the ratio was 50-50. 'Now all I need is a predator, who will feast on those fishes' I thought. I could use that fish predator, but it wasn't a good idea. That fish didn't stay dormant for long, it could kill off the pond population quicker, than I could study it. I needed a predator who ate those fishes, but wasn't as aggressive. 'Hmmm, I think I know one such predator. Although it's quite rare, if I search well enough, I should be able to find it' I thought. The predator in question, was a turtle. Normally, people would assume that turtles ate plants, but that wasn't the case with all turtles. It at least wasn't with the few I encountered before. Why I chose that turtle, was due to its natural behaviour. The turtle would hunt once a day. After its meal, it would go to sleep at the bottom of the river, or somewhere outside. 'That is perfect for me. I don't need to worry much about replenishing the "stock". The turtle would eat just one fish, and then sleep' I thought. I hoped it would stay in the pond, but what reasons would it have to leave. The food couldn't run far, and no one would bother it there. Although these types of turtles could be found outside the river, I didn't bother with that. They usually stayed at the bottom, and that was where I searched. I took me a considerable amount of time to find one. The turtle was not aggressive towards people, as long as I left it alone of course. I had different plans. With swift movements, I grabbed the turtle and picked it up. It tried to bite me a few times, so I said "Hey! Watch out will ya? I'm just going to place you somewhere else. You will have enough fish every day, so don't complain". I knew it was a turtle, but for some reason I wanted to say that. The turtle flailed its legs around, and moved its head in order to bite me. But because I carried it in front of me, it could do nothing but be carried. 'It's actually quite big and heavy this guy. Is one fish enough for such turtle?' I asked myself. The turtle's shell was about 40 centimetres in radius. Including its legs and head, it was quite big and heavy. I walked with it back to my pond, where I lowed it into the water and released it. The turtle sunk to the bottom, and stared at me annoyed. 'Can turtles be annoyed?' I asked myself confused. I moved away from the pond, and climbed a tree not far away. The turtle noticed I was gone, and checked its surroundings. 'I'm sure I would be confused too. Someone picked it up, moved it to some other place, and then left' I thought. The turtle took a while to get accustomed to its new surroundings, and then noticed the fishes swimming further away. 'I think its about to hunt one of them' I thought, and watched closely. The turtle slowly made its way towards the fishes swimming closer to the surface. Somehow the fishes were able to sense that, and quickly transformed their scales to be less visible. The turtle didn't wait any longer, and with incredible speed, swam at the small group. The fishes swam together at first, but the ones with ability detached themselves from the group, and swam opposite way. The turtle actually charged at the normal fishes, and quickly caught one. 'I learned one thing for sure. The fishes with that ability, are also responsible for warning others in the group about the predator. Because of the limited space, they couldn't run far away. But that is how their group works' I thought. The fishes with that ability were quite important. Both types of fishes benefited though. Because the fishes with that ability could stay in the school, they were better able to hide. While the normal fishes received a warning, before the predator appeared next to them. My efforts were not in vain, and I would be able to study the fishes in greater details. I wasn't worried that the turtle would leave either. After its meal, it went to sleep at the bottom of the pond. Moreover, it wouldn't be easy for it to leave the pond either. 'It probably could somehow, but why waste time, when food is right in front of you?' I thought. The turtle was satisfied with that one fish, so I left for that day. I would still need to return every day, and replenish those fishes once in a while.
