《Limits》Chapter 37: Fish in the Pond

The next day, I waited for Grond to leave, before taking care of my new dagger. He had the same pattern of behaviour everyday. He would create one ingot, then take a break and leave for a while. In the time he was absent, I would be able to create couple of moulds. When Grond left the workshop, I went straight to making the moulds. I used the crafting table with soft clay, and started the process of making a mould. I formed a thick square from the soft clay, and pressed the wooden dagger inside. I repeated the process, and produced the second half of mould. I pressed that on top the other mould, and then slowly separated both halves to take out my wooden dagger. I needed a small hole, through which I would pour the molten metal. When that was taken care of, I sealed the sides of the mould with more soft clay, and baked that in the furnace for a while. That had to be baked for a while, therefore I worked on another mould. I was able to make three moulds, before Grond returned. I used the Workshop to hide my moulds, and went back to work. Grond returned not long after that, and picked up his hammer to work as well. I finished my work past 1 o'clock, while Grond was still there probably about to make the third ingot. My next destination, was the river. I planned to catch some of those special fishes. I had a net hidden away already, so I went to retrieve it first. When I looked at the river, I could see schools of fishes swimming around. It was spring, a season of new life. The fishes were more energetic, and easier to spot. I casted my net, and waited for some to get close. I didn't have to wait long. I pulled the net out, with three new fishes trapped inside. I examined each one in great details, but found nothing at all. They looked like any ordinary fish to me. 'Maybe they are different on the inside, and it's not the scales' I thought. When I opened the fishes one by one, I compared what was inside between them. I could see no obvious differences, even though I check very thoroughly. 'Maybe I caught the wrong ones... 10% probability I would catch the right one. I should try a few more times' I though. I didn't want to waste food, especially since I knew the feeling of starvation. I roasted the fishes, and enjoyed my small meal. I repeated that a few more times, even tried to gauge which fishes possessed that ability. Ultimately though, I didn't find anything. I checked the scales, and tere didn't seem to be any differences between them. This struck me as weird. 'Why would only 10% of them have such ability, but look the same?' I thought. I released the fishes after checking their scales, and decided to think about it. 'This is time consuming. It would be faster, if I had only those fishes with the ability. But how?' I thought. Then I got an idea. If I watched the whole school of fishes, it would be inefficient and I would need a predator. What I was after, was a small group of them, which comprises of those that could only use that ability of avoiding the light. 'I still need a predator, otherwise they will not use it. Hmmm, it seems I need normal fishes too, but I can increase the percentage from 10 to 50 or even more... I need a separate container for them... I need a shovel' I thought. I made my way back to the village, and headed straight to Nick's place. I walked towards Nick's place. He was rather confused, when I asked him for a shovel. His first question was, "Did you kill someone again?". I replied quite angry, "Just because I need a shovel, it means I killed someone?". He shrugged, and replied "No. Then why do you need it?". I said "I need it to dig out a hole... Not because I killed someone! I want to try something out. This concerns that "avoid the light" part of the Art. I want to check some things out, and I need a shovel for that". He was even more confused, and asked "Digging out a hole, will help in your training?". I wasn't about to explain everything, so I just said "Yes". He was still confused, but replied "Sure, I can get you a shovel. Wait here, I will be back in a while". He then melded into the shadows. I wondered, 'How can he just meld into the shadows? I mean yea he knows the secret, but it better than those fishes. He can disappear completely' I thought. A while later, Nick returned with a shovel and handed it to me. He said "Here you go, one shovel". I thanked him, and went back to the river. Back at the river, I searched for a suitable place to dig my hole. To be more precise, I wanted to make a pond. The spot had to be located near the river, in order for the fresh water to flow through it. It had to be quite hidden as well. I didn't want anyone coming here and disturbing my fishes. I found such spt after a few minutes of searching, and started digging. I couldn't make the hole too shallow or small. Therefore I spent quite some time digging the ground near the river. The hole I dug, was around three metres in radius and about one and a metre deep. This would be enough for at least ten such fishes, as well as the predator. With the hole ready, I made two channels. One channel for fresh water to flow into the pond. The other channel was to exchange the water. The water had to be fresh, otherwise the fishes would simply die. The water flooded the pool, but there was one flaw with my design. Any fish would be able to simply leave that pond, if the swam with the current. 'I need to block the channels, but allow the water to flow at the same time. After some more thought, I came up with an idea. I just had to make two nets, and block the channels with them. 'This will allow fresh water to come through, but fish stay inside. A perfect solution' I thought. After the two nets were in place, my pond was ready. 'I need for the durt and all that to clear and settle down first. When it does, I will catch some fishes, and a predator. I will have to think about a predator a bit more' I thought. My job there was completed for now. I went back to thew village, and visited the tavern on my way. With dinner taken care of, I returned to my house.
