《Limits》Chapter 12: Get Your Own Tools

I didn't sleep for that one hour, I was afraid I would be late. I certainly didn't need more troubles. I just laid down on my bed and rested. Just before it was 1 o'clock in the afternoon, I got up and left towards the fields. At the location where fields could be found, I noticed a few people already working. One of the farmers came over to me, and said "Your job is to plough the earth in this area". He pointed at a specific area of the whole field, then added "Do you know how to plough?". I shook my head, and answered "No". He continued "In that case, I will show you how it is supposed to be done. Follow me". I followed the farmer towards my part of the field, where he showed me how to plough. I had no idea how ploughing worked, and what was involved. I only knew the name of the tool he was holding in his hand. It was a hoe. He struck the ground with its use a few times. After a while, the ground resembled a channel dug by animals. He explained to me that, when I finish one such line, I can start another one adjacent to it. He demonstrated that to, just to make sure I understood. I had to do that, until the whole area was ploughed through. After his demonstration, he asked "Do you understand?". I nodded my head, and reached my hand out for the hoe. The farmer looked at me confused, and asked "What do you want?". I replied "The tool? What else?". He started laughing, as if I said something funny. When he finally stopped laughing, he said "This is mine. If you want yours, make it yourself or buy one. I don't care either way". I narrowed my eyes, and asked "So how am I supposed to do this task then?". The farmer replied, "I don't care, use whatever you want. It's not my problem how you do it". 'I knew there will be problems, why wouldn't there be? So, they wouldn't even provide tools for me' I thought. They probably wanted me to do it with my hands, these bastards. I didn't start the work immediately. I searched the fields for something suitable. I found nothing but stones. I thought, 'Stone is still better than my bare hands'. I picked a sizable one, then started to plough. I had enough of ploughing after just one hour. Using a stone wasn't helping, but at least I wasn't damaging my hands. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to move them tomorrow. I still had couple of hours left till the end of my task. Therefore, I decided to take regular breaks, and let my hands rest. I was quite surprised, that no one demanded from me to work constantly. I wouldn't anyway, even if they gave me tools. This way, I finally managed to reach the end of my tasks for that day. I threw the stone into the field and left, I didn't speak a word to the farmers on my way back. I was too tired to do anything, I headed straight to my house, for the long awaited meal. It was one of the things that kept me going. This time, the portions were a bit bigger. I got two stale breads, as well as two bowls of porridge. I was surprised by the amount, but didn't think much about it and started devouring the food. I then laid down on my bed and rested. I wanted to check out that river later, and for that I needed strength. After a proper breeak, I left the house heading towards the river. The river was... quiet. I looked at the river's surface, and noticed some fish swimming around. 'Good, there are fishes here. I just need to make some sort of net or fishing rod, to be able to catch them' I thought. I figured that, fishing rod would be less effective. I could catch one fish at a time, and potentialy wait long for something to bite. Rod was overly complicated, and to slow. Net was a better choice, and that is what I decided upon. The problem was, "How do I create a net?". If I had a rope or something, it would be possible. The other possibility was flexible branches, vines and whatnot. I couldn't get any type of string or rope as I didn't have money. I would have to use branches and vines as the replacement. It was worth a try, I was already proficient with wood due to my profession. I wasn't allowed to go to the forest alone but there were many shrubs and trees around the village. It didn't take me long to gather enough materials, to create such a net. 'I will have to leave that for the next day though' I thought. It was getting late now, even if I was able to finish the net, it would be too late to start fishing. I still had to wake up in the morning, and work. I left the pile of branches near the river, and decided to wash myself before I returned. It was already a while since I did that, therefore without hesitation I jumped into the river and relaxed a bit. Not even a few minutes later, I could hear voices getting closer to the river. I quickly jumped out, and put on my clothes. Just in time as well. The people I heard, were already about 20 metres away from my location. From afar, I could see that they were young, maybe even my age or younger. I was 19 at that time. I noticed two young men, and one young woman. They also noticed me, and headed towards me. I just picked up my stuff... HA as if I had any, and went off in different direction. I wanted nothing to do with these people. Who knew what kind of stupid plans they had this time. Although I tried moving out of their way, they still had to find trouble with me. One of the young men shouted ,"Hey you slave, stop!". I, on the other hand ignored him. This was my free time. I had no obligation to talk with them, nor complete any tasks for them. The paper I got from the old man stated I couldn't harm them, but it said nothing about me doing stuff for them. So I just left. Yet they wouldn't give up, and shouted one after the other. "Stop you stupid slave, are you deaf?", "Fucking slave, come over here". I wasn't provoked, I was focused on leaving. Then they started to throw taunts at me, "Are you scared, slave?!", "Look at him! Already pissing his pants!". But I wasn't impressed. They finally stopped following me, in goog time too, I was about to enter my house.. I swore to myself that these people will pay for it, after I was out of here. I vowed to myself 'I will return here when I'm stronger and more experienced, then we will see who is a slave'. I was angry, but after swearing couple of times and making empty threads, I went to sleep. I would have to repeat what I did today, and I needed as much rest, as I could get.
