《P I G S》27. Preperations

Her words fluttered in my head as I lay in bed preparing to get some rest for tomorrow. It felt too surreal to even think about.
It sounded like some strange fantasy novel. However, I had to accept it. Eventually, my thoughts wandered off into dreams and I managed to get some sleep.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sound of a gunshot woke me up.
I couldn’t tell what time it was because of the endless darkness that seeped through the underground bunker.
I stumbled over to get to the light switch on and see what happened.
Before I could get to it, however, Ezra got there first and turned it on.
It seemed that Jack and Ezra were all awakened from the sound and the only person not here was the albino girl. The noise seemed to come from below us.
I opened the hatch on the floor and went down the staircase.
The first thing I saw was blood splattered on the wall which lead to the suspect of the noise.
It was the albino girl, she was dead.
The gun was in her left hand.
All I could do was stare at the body while Ezra and Jack came down. The room was filled with silence as we looked at her.
It seemed that I had gotten used to seeing corpses at this point.
I was tired of all of the death around me.
I felt like death had a grasp around all of our necks and was just waiting for the right moment to squeeze.
I wish I had tried to help her even if it was useless. At least if I did that I could say that I tried but, in reality,
I didn’t even know her name.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After that tragedy, we all went upstairs and started packing food and weapons to get ready for our trip.

It seemed that Jack seeing her body had scared the desire to live back into him.
We all packed in silence not knowing what to say after seeing what had happened.
After we finished packing we splayed the map on the floor and looked at it.
When the albino girl was alive she seemed to have marked where other bunkers were on the map.
It seemed that for the first three days of travel we would be able to sleep in the safety of a bunker however, after that there weren’t any bunkers near the ark, and the last two days we would have to find a place in the forest to sleep without getting killed by the creatures.
We decided that we would leave early in the morning tomorrow.
I didn’t admit it to Ezra and jack, but I was terrified of going back out there. I remembered the monster eating Annabelle and the horror that was on Bruno’s face.
If I was being fully honest I was worried that Ezra or Jack could be one of those chameleon monsters however, I was able to rationalize that if they were they would have killed me much sooner.
Just the thought of those creatures made my stomach turn.
Once we finished with the map and our preparations we went and did our things in silence. I picked up the book I was reading earlier to try and distract my mind from its endless worry.
I didn’t want to think of the worst outcome because I know that if I did I would lose my will to live and the others didn’t need to have two bodies in the bunker.
I couldn’t help but pray that time would just stop and that we could stay here forever, never
having to step foot outside the safety of the bunker, however, food was running out and I don’t

know how long I could live in this bunker knowing about the body in the basement.
Eventually, my eyes grew heavy and I knew it was time to rest. Ezra and Jack had already fallen asleep.
Ezra seemed to fall asleep the easiest however we had to give Jack some sleeping pills that we had found in the basement.
Unfortunately, there weren’t any left for me.
I set the book down as slowly as I could, trying to make this moment last for as long as it could.
I gently laid down on the bed and tried to close my eyes but, my heart was beating as fast as it could. I could barely contain my fear and anxiety for tomorrow.
I held onto the pillow tightly to prevent me from attempting to run away from reality with a bullet to my cranium. The body of the albino girl was plastered to my thoughts as I tried to sleep.
I felt that at this moment I understood the meaning of crying myself to sleep.
Tears gently fell from my face as I felt my worries fall with them. With a feeling of relief from my pain, I managed to fall asleep before my fears came back.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When my eyes opened I was in a place that I had been once before that I never wanted to see again. The familiar blood-red sky and dead trees seemed to go on forever.
The difference this time was Ezra and Jack were here.
I also noticed that the strange red symbols were on the floor again surrounding us.
The sound of thousands of crows gawking came closer and closer until a murder of crows large enough to cover the blood-red sky were above us.
Eventually, I saw a man walking towards me.
His lazy eye and face of a crow were something that I had never wanted to see again.
Unfavorable memories started flowing back to me as he walked closer.
Eventually, he made it to us. I was waiting for him to repeat what happened last time. He opened his beak and I noticed something different.
He had no teeth.
“Hello, we meet again” He spoke.

The Court of Souls?
What do we talk about tonight?~“How about a story?”~Fine by me. Which story? Hopefully a good one.~“There was once a lonely child in a world filled with myths, gods and demons. Only power counted there and the weak were worse than cattle. A world where survival of the fittest ruled.”~Was it strong then?~“No, but the child had a power. One that made him stand between light and darkness. Nothing could escape him, so he was shunned by his people.”~ What did he do? Did he fight his fate? Did he hide his power? What was it?~“Oh, he fought. He fought a lot. And no thing could escape his power. It was something that everyone had to live with.”~So he became a hero and changed the world?~»…”~Tell me.~“Nooo, that’s not how the story goes. This isn’t a story of a noble man, doing good amidst a sea of monsters. This is a story of a demon who was… kinder than the rest.”~A kind demon? How boring.~“I think it would be better if I tell the story, so you can judge for yourself.”~So tell the story!

8 398The Depths of Magic
Synopsis It's the year 2052 and the release of the new next-generation full-dive VRMMO game called The Depths of Magic is hitting the world by storm. The game's technology will surpass all other games before it and shock the masses. Hector who goes by the name Locke inside the game is an experienced player of the genre. He is looking to continue his goal of enjoying gaming as well as the competition that goes along with competing for the top ranking spots. Novel Summary The Depths of Magic is a LitRPG novel focused on a Fantasy VRMMO setting. This is not a harem novel. In-Game systems The Depths of Magic features state-of-the-art technology never before seen in Hector's world. The key system the novel will bring up often is the Second Brain. The Second Brain system is more like a guidance AI for the players in the game that acts as if you had a second brain assisting your every action. How much guidance this AI will give is based on its experience or mastery skills a player will receive in the game. The guidance is seamless to a point where a player won't even realize they are being assisted, it's will feel like what they are doing is something they could always do. However, once they leave the game it will become quite apparent that they were receiving heavy guidance. The purpose of this system in a writing sense is to explain why a player can realistically become more powerful, more agile, or more skilled than they would otherwise be able to as a human. To give an example if someone could move faster than a bullet, how would a normal human brain be able to perceive and control this movement properly. Or how could a player who has never held a sword before become as experienced as someone who has trained with the sword all their lives? The magic system will be another focus of this novel. I don't want to spoil anything here but it should be an interesting one. The hope is that the system I have made will spark discussion between the readers on what combinations will do what. I already have most of it, but it will be fun to read as the author. Side notes My general focus for this novel is to attempt to make the in-game systems make sense. To give a vague example I have read a lot of novels of this genre and some have the habit of just creating such powerful items that it just breaks the system, and somehow the MC keeps finding challenging situations even with those items. What tends to happen when I read a novel like this I just ignore the stats of the items he is getting because the numbers don't even matter anymore. Release schedule: The chapter release schedule due to real-life complications is to release as I write them. Patreon setup: 1 chapter early release/discord access. Free content up to the current chapter includes an excel sheet that contains Locke's current stats at the end of the chapter. This is extra information for those that are interested.
