《Love and Let Die (사랑해, 처리해줘)》Chapter 25

As expected, after Ha Neul and Dong Hyun had a 5-hour-long conversation, they decided to break up. She told him the truth, how she felt, what she wanted and how he couldn't give it to her. Dong Hyun understood her but was still disappointed and hurt. After all, he was turning 36 and was planning to propose on the White day. He never told her this, of course.

Their conversation was not the worst thing that happened to Ha Neul that day. Since they decided to break up, she needed to move out of the apartment. She did not really have a lot of her own money and it's not like you can rent an apartment in a day, therefore, Dong Hyun checked her into her favorite hotel until she was able to move to a new place. He remained his generous self till the end.

"It's not like we're strangers, you know. I still love you and want you to be well." - Those were his last words to Ha Neul.

What happened next was the dreaded conversation with her parents who were also already preparing for her engagement. It took her 7 different phone calls to finally talk some sense into her crying mother and soften the heart of her bewildered father. In the end, they all agreed that what happened was for the best.

- You know, I feel so exhausted as if I've been unloading trucks for the whole day. I just want to close my eyes and die.

Da In smiled softly as if it was not her friend talking to her on the phone, but a small tired child.

- You should rest. You'll have to handle a lot of stuff on your own from now on so rest while you can and tomorrow we will start the apartment hunting quest together!

- You know, I was always spoiled - first by my parents, then by Dong Hyun, I thought I'd finally start to understand the value of money and all the hardships of the real world, but I guess I should be grateful I have it so easy.

Da In did not respond. She knew Ha Neul was right, she was spoiled, she always had it easy but it wasn't her fault that others had it hard.

- Da In... Have I ever made you feel uncomfortable? With the gifts and parties, and other things that you couldn't afford?

- Of course not! If anything, I always felt like you were spoiled too much so you wanted to spoil me as well just to balance things out.

Ha Neul giggled but she knew it wasn't entirely true. But she was happy that her friend was so amazing that she managed to be positive even in times like these.

Since Da In had more free time on her hands, she helped her friend to look for an apartment every day. They ran around the city so much, that it felt like they managed to explore all the streets they have never seen before even after having lived here for so many years. After almost a month of searching and with the help she received from her parents and her new boyfriend, Ha Neul managed to rent an apartment close to her workplace which was also conveniently close to Min Ki's place.

- Whew, that was exhausting! I don't remember apartment hunting requiring so much effort.

- Yeah, when I decided to buy my own place, I thought I'd have to sell my soul for it to be easy but I got lucky with this one.

Seong Woo smiled at Da In and drank his beer.

- Now that I think about it, this is my first time visiting your place. I was pleasantly surprised - it is much cleaner than I expected!

She looked around once more and laughed.

- I just remembered your old place. It was quite a shocker to me the first time I saw it - you lived with your mother back then, but the apartment was a mess! At first, I thought you were lying, but then I saw all the feminine hygiene products and stuff... Now look at you, this place is spotless! Or maybe it's Ji Hoon who cleans everything here?

Seong Woo got serious all of a sudden and sighed.

- Da In, do you think I'm made of concrete or something? People change over time, you know! I am a single man who needs to know how to take care of himself so yeah, I clean, I cook, and I do my laundry in time too.

Da In could not believe how offended he sounded just now.

- Wooow, I really pricked a sore spot, didn't I? I'm sorry, mister single man, I'm not gonna assume anything about you anymore!

She laughed happily and nudged him slightly on the arm. Seong Woo could not stay offended for too long, so he laughed as well. Da In looked at him carefully and bit her lip.

"Yeah, you are all grown up now, a proper adult. If I were to compare you to the Seong Woo I knew back then, I'd say you two were different people. You are a single man who has a proper job, owns an apartment, and knows how to take care of himself."

When Da In finished this thought, she found her face feeling hot and her heart beating like a drum. She was still looking at Seong Woo, blushing.

- What is it? Is there something on my face?

He started wiping his face with his sleeve when Da In grabbed him by the hand.

- No, there's nothing wrong with your face. Nothing at all.

Seong Woo rounded his eyes and fell silent. For some time it felt like both of them went completely deaf - there was not a single sound around them. The only thing they could hear was the crazy beating of their hearts.

- Da In... I -

He couldn't finish the sentence because the intense silence was interrupted by the beeping sound of the password lock behind the door.

- Yo, Seong Woo, I'm starving, do you wanna order something?

Da In came back to her senses and dropped Seong Woo's hand. He jumped to his feet and stepped away from her as if he was electrocuted. Ji Hoon came back from the gym and barged into the kitchen.

- Oh, Da In, you're here too! Long time no see. How have you been?

- Uhm... Fine! I've been helping Ha Neul with her apartment so I'm a bit tired but aside from that, I'm enjoying my unemployment.

She scratched the back of her head and giggled, embarrassed. It looked like Ji Hoon realized that he might have interrupted something but the atmosphere was already ruined.

- Ordering food sounds tempting, what do you want?

- I don't know. Da In, are you gonna stay for dinner?

- Well, if you guys don't mind.

Ji Hoon smiled brightly and placed his hand around Seong Woo's shoulder.

- Come one, of course not! Moreover, this is your time visiting us here, I think we should celebrate this!

Seong Woo looked at Da In pleadingly from underneath his forehead. For some reason, it seemed like he didn't want to be left alone with his friend.

- Sure, let's order pizza and more beer then!

Having dinner with Seong Woo and Ji Hoon was becoming more normal for Da In. Ever since she quit her job and due to their very convenient location, it became easy for the three of them to gather together without any apparent reason. Now that she was free and her only friend Ha Neul was busy going on dates with her new boyfriend, Da In would have started feeling extremely lonely if it wasn't for these two.

- By the way, Seong Woo, they called me from the nursing home, they couldn't get in touch with you for some reason.

Seong Woo froze and looked at Da In. She was looking back at him with her eyes wide open. Ji Hoon understood their reaction, placed his beer on the table, and sighed.

- Dude... Don't tell me she didn't know?
