There were many low ranking and boring requests at the paper rank request board. There weren’t many adventurers at this board as the last adventurer exam was held about a month ago and most of the paper ranked have already increased their level into ceramic rank.

I need to find a request that involves killing something, even if it is a mosquito so that I can level up faster. Then I can go on actual requests to slay some monsters. I also need to keep track of time so that I won’t be late for school.

“Request to help kill rats”

Now this is a request that I have been looking for. Now I’m going to be OP. The reward is 10 copper coins.

I take the request straight to Kira. Since she is the most beautiful receptionist and no other man seems to have courage to go speak to her, she is mostly free. There are few women who go to her but the men stay away from her, even if they have to wait in line at other receptionists.

I wonder if Kira is a hardcore feminist and hates all males. That could be another reason why there’s no man who visits her desk. But she didn’t seem like that to me a while ago.

I submit the request to Kira and she takes a look at the request and says,”Finally this request is off that board. It had been there for almost a year now.”

“Why, what’s so special about that request that everyone’s avoiding it?”

“There is not any issue with the request but the request reward is not sufficient considering the large amount of rats that have infested that house.”

“The reward money is not a problem for me right now as I have the money from the guild master. I need to gain some experience so that I can reach higher rank in the guild. By the way, can I accept multiple requests at the same time?”

“Yes, you can. But if you don’t complete any one of the requests within 5 days then you will have to pay a fine which is 50% of the reward money.”

“Ok, I will go get another request.”

I go back to the request board and take a request that I had seen earlier. I hand it to Kira.

The first thing that I have to do is buy some mouse traps that will not kill the rat. I’ll have to kill the rat if I want to gain some experience. I also buy a big bag.

Then I search for a cat in the alleys that looks like it’s a stray. After searching for an hour or two, I find a cat that is black with white patches. It was quite difficult to catch it but I managed to do it after a while due to my higher speed.

With the cat in a bag and the mouse traps, I head to the house that was infested with rats.

When I reach the house, I was shocked to see that it was a large mansion unlike the small shack of a poor person that I had imagined. It was not possible to guess that a house infested with rats would be such a luxurious mansion.

I knock the door. The door opens after a while and there was a large rat who opened the door!!! It was as tall as a man and had grey fur. It had long and sharp incisors protruding from it’s mouth and gleaming red eyes.

“Who might you be? Who are you looking for?”

“I’m here from the adventurer’s guild. I accepted the request to help kill rats.” I say while showing my card and my legs are trembling with fear.

“Oh! Welcome. Please come in.”

The giant rat moves aside to allow me to enter. I was scared of that rat in the beginning but I noticed that it’s just a man wearing rat costume so I go inside.

Inside the door I could see holes in the floor and walls made by rats. I was disappointed that none of the holes were like an inverted U. There were few rats that were brave enough to run around even in daylight. I go and sit on the sofa that was chewed up by rats. The rat man sits opposite to me.

“As you can see, there are many rats that live in my house. My children found some baby rats in one of their friends house, who lives in the outskirts of the city and brought them home. They wanted to keep them as pets so I allowed them despite my wife’s reluctance. I bought a glass cage that is like an aquarium so the rats may not climb out. The got big quickly and also started to breed.”

“Let me guess, one of your kids dropped the cage and the rats ran away.”

“Yes that is what happened. I tried to search for the rats but couldn’t find them anywhere. I thought that without anyone to feed them, they would die and then I could find their dead bodies but I was wrong. Within a couple of months, the house was overrun by rats and there was nothing I could do. My wife left me and took the kids with her to her mother’s place.”

“I get the cause of the problem, but why are you in a rat costume?”

“The rats started to eat everything and they would have eaten me too, but I realized that they didn’t eat each other so I dressed as a rat.”

“Ok. I will try my best to kill the rats but I cannot promise you that I can kill all of them.”

“Thank you. That would be a great help.” He said while sobbing.

I open the bag which I had with me and the cat jumped out. The man was surprised to see a cat in my bag. He might have been wondering what might be in my bag. You could say I let the cat out of the bag. The cat starts running after some of the rats.

“Do you have a knife that I can borrow!”

“Ah Yes, I will get one right away.”

While he goes to the kitchen to get a knife, I set the traps.

“While you get the knife, also bring some food that the rats like.” I shout.

“Ok”

The man returns back with a knife and some bread. I place pieces of bread in the traps and put them in the corners. Now all I have to do is wait.

I take the knife and walk around the house stabbing in the corners and in the cracks between the planks on the floor and wall. When I pull the knife out, it is smeared with blood. This house is filled with so many rats that you can kill a couple of them just by stabbing blindly at a corner.

I spend some time stabbing the rats while the cat is killing and eating others. It must have been very hungry because it has already eaten about 7 rats. If things continue like this, I will get rid of most of the rats by tomorrow.

It’s already evening and I have already killed around a couple hundred rats. The cat was a big help because it started to just kill the rats after it was full. It also scared a lot of them out of the house. I bet there will be more rat extermination requests in the future in this neighborhood.

The man has prepared me dinner to show his gratitude. The house is almost clear of rats so he is now in normal clothes. He is a man in his late 40’s and looks very tired due to his situation.

After dinner, I ask,”Can I stay here for the night? I want to kill few remaining rats tomorrow morning.”

“I would be more than happy to host you for another day. You have helped me a lot and that’s the least I can do for you. You can sleep in my son’s room.”

So I got a room for the night. At around seven I go to sleep.

And I wake up in my room. I hope no rat has come to this side with me.

I hurry to prepare my breakfast and lunch as I am running late. I barely reach my class on time.

I spend my day starting at Miya while all the other guys are starting at me with intimidating aura. Whenever she notices me staring at her, she blushes and looks the other way. But I don’t stop starting at her. Dose she think I’m a stalker and her face is getting red due to anger?? I can’t ignore that as a possibility.

Thus my day ended without much events. I return home without dying and prepare & have my dinner. I go to sleep at about 6pm.

When I wake up there is breakfast next to my bed. Though I just had dinner in scientifica, my body here in magica is very hungry so I gobble it up.

I go downstairs and the client is reading newspapers with tears in his eyes. When he notices me coming downstairs, he says,”This is the first time in a year I have read a newspaper 😭”

He seems really happy though his eyes are in tears. I go to take a look at the traps while ignoring him.

What the hell is this?? There are a lot more rats in there traps than there’s supposed to be. Even after killing all those rats yesterday, their numbers still seems to be high.

In kill all the rats caught in the traps. The cat is sleeping in one corner, with a full belly. I stab around the cracks and corners for a while again. There are a few rats remaining but they are a lot lower than compared to yesterday. I don’t think I can kill any more rats.

“Sir, I have killed all the rats I could, so I would like to leave now.”

“Thank you very much. I can’t find enough words to thank you for your help.”

“Could you sign this request form as a proof of my completion of this request.”

“Ah! Gladly”

“I would like you to buy a cat. Also, I have left all the traps I brought with me so make sure to make full use of them.”

“Thank you.” He says, while crying.

I leave the place with the cat in my bag. Before I return to the guild to claim my reward, I have to go to a certain place. I don’t know the exact location of the place so I ask other pedestrians for the directions and reach that place.

I knock the door of the house and a little girl, probably 6 or 7 years old, opens the door. She is so cute that I want to adopt her as my sister. But she seems very sad.

“Who are you brother? What do you want?”

“I’m here from the guild. Did you post a request there?” I say while showing my card.

“Yes, my mother did. Please come in. We can talk about the request inside.”

Oi oi little girl, should you be inviting a stranger in your house so easily? It might also be the trust people have in the adventurers. I go inside the house and into the drawing room.

“Please have a seat. I am Lola. As you know, we had posted a request to help find my missing pet. He was lost a week ago and I couldn’t find him. I really love and miss him so my mother posted a request at the guild to find him. Thank you so much for accepting the request.”

Lola clearly was very sad about her lost pet. She was about to burst into tears but was holding it in because she didn’t want to embarrass herself in front of a stranger.

“What was his name?”

“Mr. Mittens.”

“That’s a cute name, isn’t it Mr. Mittens.”

I say while opening the bag. Mr. Mittens jumps out and runs towards Lola. Lola was first surprised but then her eyes opened wide with happiness. She hugs her cat tightly. Mr. Mittens also seemed to have missed her very much.

“Thank you big brother. You brought my Mr. Mittens back to me. I’m so happy.” She is sho happy that she gives me a tight hug as well. I’m also really happy to have found the little sister I never had. I wonder if I can get her parents to adopt me.

“But how did you find him?”

“Did you forget that the request form had his description?”

“No, I mean the city is huge and we couldn’t find him but y found him so soon. I was sure he was lost for ever.”

“I just got lucky. By the way, where is your mother? I needed her to sign this request form.”

“Mommy has gone outside, she will be back anytime now.”

“Ok, I will wait for her here. You can play with Mr. Mittens till then.”

I wait for a few minutes and the front door opens.

“Mommyyy, look who’s back!!!!”

Lola shouts while running towards her mother with Mr. Mittens in her arms.

“He’s back?! How did he get here?”

“A good big brother brought him back. He’s waiting for you inside.”

“Hello mam, I’m an adventurer and I had accepted your request to find your cat.”

“Thank you so much for finding him. Lola had been crying her eyes out every day. I hadn’t seen her this happy since the last week. I can’t thank you enough.”

“I’m just doing my job. I’m glad I could be of help. Could you please sign this request form for me?”

“Of course, with pleasure.”

“I’ll take your leave now.”

“Please stay for lunch. I’m sure Lola would love to spend some time with her new favorite big brother.”

“Yes please stay” Lola who had been hugging me for a while said. I couldn’t resist that, could I? So I stay for lunch.

After lunch I take my leave. Lola didn’t want me to leave but I said I have to go and promised to visit her again some day.

Oh wait! I haven’t seen my stats ever since I killed all those rats. I had leveled up a few times but I forgot what level I had reached. So I activate my skill ‘Status check’.
