《Breaking The Game》Quest 32: Reacknowledge A Pair

“Guys, over here!” Xander said. He waved to the two men that just entered the Adventurer’s Guild. It was Nicholas and Rex. They had finished with their business over at The Feral Tomcat and had to reunite with the remaining half of the team. None of them frequented the guild, but it was a good place to meet. Jobs were always being posted on the bulletin board. Tables were arranged to allow teams to converse. There was even a lounge area for those that needed to rest between travels. The wooden building wasn’t eloquently decorated, but it did have its own style that stood apart from the norm.

“What’s up? Everything going alright?” Rex said as he approached his partners. He took a seat at their table and rested his weary mind for a moment. How was he supposed to explain what just happened with Genesis? He couldn’t outright say that his classes were chosen at random Neither Xander nor Robyn would ever let that go. They’d joke about it until the end of time if they could. Still, Rex felt like he needed to say something. Nicholas, on the other hand, refused to. He shook his head at his conflicted partner to silence him for the time being.

“Yeah, we’re just filling out our paperwork. Are you two going to register your classes too? We should form a team while we’re all together.” Robyn said. She gestured to the sheet in front of her, but it wasn’t paper. At least, it wasn’t the high-grade paper that people from the modern world would be used to. To be more precise, it was a shaved wooden tablet with a black center. Chalk was used to write on it, and the clerk at the front desk would transcribe it onto something more permanent. This was how adventurers gave their basic information such as class, level, adventuring name, and desired job. It’s also the place where these four learned to read and write.

“Aw, I like being The Unnamed Team. It’s really ‘us’, you know? Let’s just stick with it.” Nicholas said with a grim face. He was lying, as per usual. Not a single part of him wanted to keep such a name for the team. They needed to name and define themselves as a legitimate team. Remaining unnamed meant that people wouldn't recognize them as a real team. Rewards could go to individual members rather than the four as a whole. This was especially bad because Pride’s bounty had yet to be paid. Sloth only made things more complicated. Then, there was the issue with Lust…

“You should probably register your familiar too. We need to do everything to keep this paperwork up to date.” Xander said. He prioritized the boring paperwork above anything else because of his new class. It wasn’t as if he cared what others thought of him. He cared more about them remembering him at all. With the sudden shift to [Archer], Xander’s skill [Forgettable] evolved into [Unadorned]. Not enough time had passed to learn its effects, but it couldn’t be good.

“I'd rather have them freak out every time I summoned it, but fine,” Nicholas said. He walked over to the receptionist who gave both men their own handheld blackboards and chalk. They returned and swiftly detailed the changes that needed to be made to their record. The team worked diligently. They each marked their new classes: [Striker], [Magician], [Beast Tamer], and [Archer]. Their levels were even across the board at level twenty-five. It seemed Sloth gave more than a simple bounty. The fraction of his experience bestowed upon the team was enough to propel them to a significantly higher level than before. They could easily battle anything in the local area, except for some glaring outliers.

Nicholas used a second blackboard to register his familiar. His slime, Cinco, was now gone. There would be no further iterations of the naming scheme now that it had evolved. Nicholas was now able to summon what was called a Predator Slime, but most of its details remained hidden. The town’s recovery and the team’s new classes came so quickly that he never had time to check. Regardless, he knew it was powerful. If a fraction of a sin's experience was enough to set the team at level twenty-five, the new slime was expected to be much higher than that. With a name like Predator Slime, anything was possible.

With everything complete, the four turned in their tablets.

“Everything seems in order. Also, can I just say, it’s an honor to help you four. I’m sure we’ll be seeing each other more often now that you’ve increased in rank.” Receptionist Emma said. She had been watching the team fill their tablets for some time and was more than eager to assist. It wasn’t every day that she could help gold-ranked adventurers. The city was mostly filled with rankless and copper-ranked adventurers, which were the two lowest ranks. A gold-ranked adventurer was a rare sight to see, but Emma still grimaced at the thought of these four having the rank that they did. The Unnamed Team deserved better. There wasn’t a single person in town who believed they should be anything less than platinum, the highest rank.

“Yup. That’s us. The team that everyone loves to work with. Speaking of, do you think we could form an official team?” Rex said. He tried to brush past the fact that everyone wanted to work with them. Emma wasn’t much different from the others. No one would refuse to work with heroes. At this point, everyone the team met was driven by the urge just to be close to them. Was this what Rose had to deal with? It was possible. It was also possible that she scared off those kinds of people. Rose was a known solo hero. She never had a team nor would she consider forming one. Rex’s team, on the other hand, had a welcome and less intimidating aura around them.

“An official team?” Emma asked. She wasn’t sure what Rex meant. Was he asking for the team to be licensed? Were they planning to form their own organization? Did they intend to recruit other parties to form a company that would actively hunt the remaining sins? These questions continued to flood her innocent mind. In reality, the four simply wanted to stop being called The Unnamed Team. They wanted something that sounded cooler, or at least meant something significant.

“We’ve been working together, but no one ever made it official through the guild. Can we just do the paperwork now?” Robyn said. She wanted to get everything done quickly, so she could return to her bedroom and fall asleep. They needed to wake up early to train. With the local area only holding low-level monsters, travel was mandatory if they wanted to encounter challenging opponents.

“Are you four not registered as The Unnamed Team? That’s what everyone calls you.” Emma said with a confused expression. Teams rarely kept their original names. Titles changed based on people’s own assumptions and the group’s actions. For example, a team called Dragon Hunters would be easily recognized as powerful, and their main activities would be obvious. Most teams fell into this pattern, so it never took long for the public to decide a team’s name. This was especially prevalent for teams that neglected to name themselves or rarely announced their name.

“Not registered, but everyone calls us that. Look, can we just make a team?” Rex said. He and the others were unaware of the norm. Once a team name was given, it was almost impossible to change. Of course, they didn’t even know that they could name themselves until a short while ago.

“Teams are just a formality. Since you four are already associated with each other, there’s no need to do anything more.” Emma said. She tried her best to explain the situation as gently as possible. She wasn’t sure why, but it was clear the heroic team was distressed about their title.

So, what you’re saying is…” Xander said, slowly realizing what was implied.

“You four have been, and will always be, The Unnamed Team.”
