《Errand Boy》Chapter 8: The Summoned Vs. The Repeater (Part 2)

"This is the last time you underestimate a summoned, you brat!"
Having lost an opponent, the students start to form a prepared formation for fighting something they called a 'raid boss'
With Dean's melee fighter squad in the front along with the knights, they charge in with a V formation, planning to surround her while the class rep along with the ranged fighters starts shooting.
With all the projectiles coming her way it was surprising to see her gracefully avoid each and every one, but it kept her busy long enough for the Melee fighters to surround her.
"Surrender! You're surrounded and I'd rather not have to hurt a pretty lady like you!" (Dean)
Really.. at such a situation only Dean would still try to flirt with an enemy... Hearing Dean's command the red-haired bandit simply let out a mocking chuckle
"You really know nothing about fighting Summoned do you boy?"
As she spoke, a thin layer of mana covered her body once more, hearing no chant means that she's simply strengthening her body by flowing mana into it instead of a buffing spell... Wait, that means she wasn't mana boosting from the very start!?
"Dean get aw-" (Annastasia)
I couldn't finish my sentence before the bandit leader shot forward at an incredible speed, swinging at Dean horizontally aiming to cut his body in half.
Luckily, what the boy lacks in intelligence he balances out with his pure talent in battle, His instincts kicked in at the right time as he was able to jump back far enough for the blade to miss its target completely.
"Tch" Seeing that her attack missed, the bandit leader clicked her tongue, using the momentum of her failed attack to spin around, slamming her magical roundshield downward towards the vulnerable Dean.
Class Rep POV

"DEAN!"
I shout as the shield manages to connect to its target. Although Dean managed to block it with his now bent short sword, an indentation was still left on the ground underneath him, showing just how much force was in that attack.
Before she could send out another attack Annastasia casts a binding magic to stop the bandit leader from moving.
"Arcana: Light Chains!"
Chains of light shoot out from several floating magic circles around the small witch, all wrapping around the red-haired bandit leader to stop her movements. Taking this opportunity, one of the nearby knights quickly carry the injured Dean away from danger.
"Hurry! Take her down!" (Annastasia)
That's right! We this is our chance! I quickly go to command our long ranged fighters to fire
"Fire! Take her down!"
Even with the chains stopping her movements she was able to shift her body so that the arrows and metal balls didn't hit her vital spots. The buffing magic she previously cast on herself keeping her body from getting seriously hurt.
She would continue to struggle for a moment before her body slumps forward lifelessly, a few of the students flinching thinking she just died.
"Don't relax just yet!" (Annastasia)
With her reminder, everyone raised their weapons. Eyes glued to the body wrapped up in magic chains. A moment of silence would pass before a gasp escapes Annastasia's mouth, a glimmer of light would come from her eyes as she covers it with mana
"There's no soul in that body...The corpses!"
She quickly retracted the magical chains before running towards the dried up bandit corpses, a lifeless sigh escaping from her mouth as one of the corpses was missing.
2 hours later in the village
The party sat around the campfire, an exhausted look still on Annastasia's face

"I can't believe it.. why didn't I think about that possibility... I'm such an idiot" (Annastasia)
"Don't beat yourself up over it, we were all fooled... Besides, thanks to you Dean is alive" (Class Rep)
"I know.. but still" She'd pause "I never expected to fight someone like that, I mean what's up with that anyway! A swordsman with Support magic and necromancy!? That's just unfair!" (Annastasia)
Seeing her reveal a bit of childishness brought out a few chuckles from the others around her.
"But what was up with her anyway...? She was obviously outnumbered but she still decided to attack Dean, isn't that kind of stupid?" (Class Rep)
"Hmmm... Oh! Maybe she wanted to transfer to Dean's body... It'd be hard for you guys to fight if it was a fellow classmate right?" (Annastasia)
The group nodded in agreement
"That was her original plan and we were totally oblivious to it... If She succeeded it would have been a massive loss for us" (Annastasia)
"What was that even about? I know what a summoned is, but whats a repeater?" (Class Rep)
"Well.." She'd hesitate for a moment "A repeater is a term summoned use to call my kind" (Annastasia)
"Your kind..? Like the people living on this planet?" (Class Rep)
"No, no um I mean.. By my kind I meant Reincarnators... 'Repeater' is like an insult that the summoned like to use" (Annastasia)
The surroundings immediately quieted down, not a single sound could be heard from the people around the campfire. Before the students screamed in perfect synchronization.
"You've reincarnated!?"
The small girl covered her ears, not expecting all the shouting
"Agh! Yes! So stop shouting ouch! I completely forgot that you guys are new summoned!" (Annastasia)
"New summoned? Does that mean there are others that have been summoned more than once?" (Class Rep)
"Sure! There are times where a person is only summoned once but most of the time a summoned person would be summoned again after a few years" (Annastasia)
"What the heck... So does that mean even if we get back home we might be summoned again in the future?" (Class Rep)
"Well... I can't tell you for sure. This is the first time I've heard of an entire Class being summoned. Usually its two or three people, plus there's..." She'd pause as she remembers the issue of tracking down Alek "Ah.. nothing, anyways let this encounter be a reminder for you guys. There're summoned out there who're way stronger than you, we were lucky to encounter an oddity like that red-haired woman. I'd assume that she focused more on abilities that would help her escape rather than fighting skills. In most cases that you meet another summoned, Run away. You cant take them on alone at your current level" (Annastasia)
"And how about people like you? Repeat- Ehem I mean Reincarnators?" (Class Rep)
"Same case. Well, most Reincarnators are pretty lowkey and simply want to live their life peacefully. So as long as you don't mess with them then it'll be fine" (Annastasia)
"Alright, We'll keep that in mi-" (Class Rep)
Her words were cut short when a sudden crashing sound came from the village chiefs house, the house where the injured Dean was being held in!

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion. Please use your best judgment, and don't be afraid to take breaks and come back later. I'll still be here! [Discord] - come hang out and chat!
