《I've Transmigrated... with a Broken System》Chapter 9: The Morning After

As the night faded away and the early morning light shone over Littlefeather, the residents of the town started to appear on the streets. People could be seen weaving in and out of each other, gather ingredients, preparing for hunting or setting up small stalls at the side of the road. Everyone was doing their morning rituals.
The hustle and bustle of the street below started to wake up Renard. The morning light speckled in through the window onto his face, the smell of fresh bread being baked drifted in from the bakery next door and the commotion from the street below could be heard through the walls.
As Renard's eyes slowly opened the rush of ease ran through his body. He had recovered most of his energy and had a good dream last night, there was no reason for him to not feel at ease.
However, that sense of ease could not last. Once he began to reflect on his memories, the events of last night quickly entered his mind. Renard quickly jolted upright. 'Why did I do that?! Am I crazy?'
After the initial panic Renard took a moment to properly think about the situation. 'I wasn't kicked out during the night, so Amanda must not have told the bar keep. Wait, I have come to a fantasy world, maybe what I did is normal here... No, that doesn't matter, I shouldn't have done that, I must keep my morals if I want to become powerful, public opinion is everything, overwhelming power can't stop everything. I will have to watch how she reacts to me later.'
Renard had wanted to go back to sleep earlier but there was no chance of that now, his momentary feeling of ease had been shattered. After reflecting on his actions again and again, Renard finally came up with a more reasonable response to what he had done.

'I let my fears from "Lucy" effect my judgement. I just want to be an upright guy, I need to control myself more.' He sighed, this was another time he couldn't blame the system, he only had himself to blame, well and "Lucy".
Renard slumped back down onto the bed, defeated. All the energy he had gained from his nights sleep was gone.
The afternoon sun shone across Renard's room, the bustle from the street below had calmed down, only the occasional sounds of haggling and clops of hooves could be heard now. Many of the other guests in the inn were experiencing the pleasant atmosphere, however, Renard was not. He had pale skin and hollow looking eyes, if you looked into them, you would feel as if you would fall in. Renard's current look and mood made the room feel extremely dark and gloomy.
Looking as if a dead person had risen from their grave, Renard sat up, joints creaking from lying down too long. Renard placed his head in his hands, 'For some reason, I have been given a new life in this world. I mustn't let this stop me. I want to be powerful, I knew it wasn't going to be easy but with this system it will become a lot easier, even with all its flaws. I need to persist and keep going otherwise this new chance would have been wasted.'
Renard's confidence had finally returned, he walked over to his window and looked down onto the street below him. Seeing the people carry on with their lives without any help from a magical system like his caused colour and energy filled his face.
Renard relaxed and drifted into thought, 'What can I do to be more powerful right now? My current weapon is that dagger although it seems quite powerful its reach is short and against more intelligent enemies it would be troublesome to get that close to them.'

'Although I haven't been hit by an attack yet, I think that these clothes aren't going to be worth much defence. It's decided, before I go any further with this I need to get myself a sword and some armour.' Renard opened his eyes and walked straight towards the door, he had an objective now, he knew what he had to do.
*DING*
[New Objective Created]
[Purchase new armour and a sword]
[Reward: 5 XP]
'Wow, this system really knows how to motivate me, if I complete the objective I will become stronger in two ways. I'm starting to enjoy this. I wonder what else this system has in store for me.'
In that moment, Renard had just placed his hand on his door to leave the room and it was as if the system had heard him.
[##ERROR##]
[Object is in an invalid position]
[Object ID invalid]
[Object unresponsive]
[Removing Object]
'It's fine, I know how to deal with this. I must adapt to this system.' Renard sighed as he thought this.
He stood still for a moment and collected himself but he couldn't keep the rage down. 'I understand you are broken, but did you really have to remove my door!'
The barkeep usually had a long arduous work shift, from early in the morning till late at night which would leave him in an unpleasant mood during the day. However, on this particular day he was unusually happy. That was all down to the fool he managed to scam the day before.
The barkeep was idling around at the bar as it had been a slow morning. However, when he saw the source of his current joy walk down the stairs he couldn't help but think. 'What a fool.'
He kept his mouth closed not wanting the customer to ask for a refund however, it seemed that the customer was determined to talk to him. 'What a shame, I bet he is going to ask for his money back. Like I am going to give it to him though, he is a tiny weakling.' The barkeep was clearly over estimating Renard's intelligence.
Renard walked up the the bar trying to keep an angry look on his face, he thought he had a perfect plan. He placed his hand on the side of the bar, looking towards the barkeep, a stern look was in Renard's eyes. After a brief pause, he started to talk.
"Mr. Barkeep, it seems that the door to my room has been stolen, I woke up this afternoon and it is now gone. Before you start to think this is a joke, I am totally serious, how are you going to reimburse me for this."

Saga of Fallen Kings, Book I: The Revenant Prince
The Philosopher King once conquered the known world, his power seemingly unlimited and his armies inexhaustible. Since that time his might has slowly unravelled, and his once steadfast empire has begun to crack, splinter and devour itself. In the isolated Southern Realms, where even magic has abandoned them, none of that matters. For years it has been filled with warring kingdoms, where as many kings die to the blade as to old age, and constant battles tear apart the land. When one such kingdom invades its old enemy, the King and his heir, Prince Caden, are killed. Unable to accept the loss of his family Prince Arian is broken, and when the Philosopher King stretches out his hand in aid, Arian takes it without a second thought. When Caden wakes from death, he's different. His eyes and soul have changed, and he finds a world filled with friends who no longer trust he's even human. Suddenly thrust onto the throne and indebted to the Philosopher King, Caden has no choice but to keep going - he must finish what his father started, and try to survive the machinations of the figure who now owns his fealty. Meanwhile something beyond death stirs for him, desiring nothing more than to drag him back into its embrace. Author's Note: This story used to be known as "A King of his Own", but after some consideration I have decided to rebrand it. The first reason is that I was growing increasingly dissatisfied with the title. The second is that I have come increasingly to view this story as a 'saga' containing multiple 'books' rather than one long, continuous publication, and as I did so I realized that as I was quickly getting to a point in the story where I wanted the first 'book' to end. This doesn't mean I'm going back on the things I said below - they're just going to continue in the next book of the Saga of Fallen Kings. :) Also, be aware that I do plan to edit this at some point. Though I take care to squash out any obvious errors when I proof-read, and do simple edits in that process, at some point I'm almost certainly going to do large edits that might significantly change parts of the story. Old author's notes: This started as a completely random writing session. There was no purpose or direction, but as I kept typing an entire world began to form in my mind that I knew I had to write about. My plan is to turn this story into a veritable medieval fantasy epic that spans an entire world, follows multiple character and storylines, and takes place over many years. The story has quite a grounded, almost 'realistic' start, but many more fantastical elements will be introduced, expanded upon and become central to the narrative. I have ideas for this story that make me genuinely excited and I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy writing it, and join me on what will hopefully become a truly massive fantasy epic. If you do enjoy this story please consider following, rating and leaving a review. I'm also happy to answer any questions or comments you have.
