《Doomsday Pillars》001. A Second Chance

‘Doomsday started at January 2020"
‘We thought that we could last longer, but we didn't. 10 years was all it took. In the year 2020, Doomsday suddenly dropped upon us. We weren’t ready nor aware at all.
‘The old Mayans had once predicted that the end of the world would be in the year 2012. Many religions and cultures believed in it, but they got it wrong. Judgment day began in the new year of 2020.
‘During the first week, more than 80% of the world’s population died. It all started with a plague then it brought death and sorrow, but it also gave us, the survivors, special abilities.
‘Afterwards, the dead rose and more than half of the human survivors died in the second week, less than 10% of the original human population was left to walk the earth.
‘When we thought that there was no more hope they came, 1008 Pillars descended from the sky and planted itself across more than 100 countries. These Pillars became our home. It gave humanity a safe haven. It gave us a chance to resist. We started to fight back.
‘But we were fools. We thought we could actually win, but we only lasted 10 years. All big nations; America, China, Europe were obliterated in 5 years.
'After 10 years of constant struggling. We’re now standing in one of the last Pillars in a small country at the corner of the world…
‘My name is Alex, and this is my final note. They’re already here. They’re coming closer. The screaming, the heavy trembling steps. Those things took everything from me! All my comrades, my friends, my family... they're all gone!
‘This mysterious ball is the switch to self-destruct this pillar. At the very least, I will bring down all of those bastards with me!’

Alex hastily wrote on a crumpled old paper when the door tremored. He looked at the glowing ball behind him, and within it, saw his reflection, a weary face. Looking through it, memories from the distant past resurfaced. "In the end, there are only regrets. If we only knew what was coming. If we only prepared. If we only… there really is no point when it already came to this."
Alex took out a piece of a picture from his pocket. He smiled at it warmly. He held it close to his heart and tears began to fall from his weary face. It's a picture of the past; his family where they were all smiling. “Goodbye…”
The mysterious ball shone blindingly and everything it touched slowly turned to ash.
Everything was white, but then, a figure floated in front of Alex.
He squinted and tried to recognize the person in front of him, but it was just a blurry grey figure.
Alex, the human race has failed. You are given one last chance. Don't waste it.
Alex roared as if he was being crushed by a 100-meter waterfall bearing down on him trying to flatten him but then the pressure disappeared, and everything became black.
Talking, laughing, the smell of a long-missed delicacy, he slowly opened his eyes and the big rectangular box with moving pictures played an old comedy movie he had used to watch a lot. Looking down, the white mug filled with brown liquid on top of the table formed a vapor rising into the air.
He dumbfoundedly stared at the TV, it had been years since the Doomsday started and after it began, all electronic devices weren’t working.
Alex looked around and saw the bookshelves towering in the corner and the computer sitting on top of a desk beside the shelf. The TV on the wall, the glass table in front of him, the couch he was sitting on.

Everything felt familiar as if these were things he had in the past, he then came to a realization. “How do you like your coffee this time? Does it have enough milk in it?”
He was startled and blinked several times at the woman from his distant past smiling at him. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Then, high-pitched giggling sounded as the wooden floors thudded because of the two little kids running around.
“Mommy! We are gonna be late for school!”
“Ok, let's go! Daddy, we are going first!” The woman chuckled and left with the two little girls.
Alex's words were stuck in his throat, he tried to remember the memories stored away in the far corners of his mind, but before he even got to say a word, his wife and 2 daughters already rushed out of the house. He wanted to speak, but no words came out, he couldn't even move his body. Everything, all of this, felt like a dream to him.
He stared blankly at the TV screen for what seemed an eternity and finally calmed down. He switched to a news channel with a newscaster reporting about the weather.
On the lower corner of the screen, it showed the date. December 1, 2019. It was 30 days before the end of days started.
He tried to make sense of what just happened before everything went dark. He recalled the blast, the grey figure, and the message. Alex finally realized that he just got reincarnated and now he got a second chance.
With eyes full of determination, he stood up and clenched his fist. "This time, things will be different."

A New Leaf
When people mention fantasy games and RPGs, they usually think of goblins, elves, orcs, dwarves and magic (apart from the percentage that gets an image of an anti-tank weapon in their mind, I will respectfully put those individuals aside for now). But what if you get neither of those (not even the weapon, I know, sad)? And what if you end up playing as something that doesn't look like an animal at all? And what if the said game you were playing weren't actually a game, but real life changed by irresponsible, beyond-mortal beings? Follow the (mis)adventures of "player" 13241, a.k.a. Treant, as he experiences what it's like to be a walking magical fruit maker (among other things). When the world goes to hell and back, plants are the ones that remain, right?

The Solipsist
Every novel needs a main character, and in this case, it's a young man named Jacob Bates. Jacob is your average guy who likes books, television, and long walks on the beach. One day, Jacob was diagnosed with a condition that made his body frail and weak. This drove Jacob to focus solely on his studies, ending up becoming a fairly capable guy, despite his condition. The road ahead was looking great! That's when a little scene occurred between Jacob's girlfriend and one of his male classmates. Jacob's mood was a little lower than dirt from thereon. His motivation to pursue his studies, gone. This event caused Jacob to fall into the death grip that is a job in retail. One day, while Jacob was mopping the cold floors of the grocery store he worked in, a strange blue screen appeared in front of him, notifying him that the world was going through a change. Now if this change was a good or bad thing, he didn't know. But there was one thing Jacob knew for certain. He didn't have to mop the floors anymore. Author's Note: (This is my first story, and I would be very thankful if grammatical errors were pointed out. I could also take a few suggestions in the comments if you would. This is less a planned production, and more a little project that I'm winging as it goes. I will try and be consistent with at least 2 chapters a week. Also, as I am a completely new author, the number of words per chapter may fluctuate. The minimum will be around 1000 words, while other chapters may be 2000-3000. It will hopefully only get better with time.)

A Virtual Invasion

Maybe with a bit of luck and planning, he can build a force to defend the world without anyone realizing it. Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
