《Bloodlines: Awakening》Chapter 3

Varric sprinted forward and pulled Yvette off of the hunters as she thrashed about, as he began to back away from them Yvette turned on him.
She whipped her head towards him and sunk her teeth into his neck, as she drank Varric took a deep breath... he was still recovering from the last time she had drunk his blood, but he persisted backing away from the men... who were hardly alive.
The fourth man ran to his comrades and began to examine them, "Damn it! Get up!", light poured from the man's hands as his comrade's wounds began to seal up.
Varric pointed off into the woods, "If you start running now you might survive this! Go-", he was cut off by one of the recovering men firing a gun.
A spurt of blood came from Yvette's back and in an instant, Varric pried her off and rushed forwards quickly and effortlessly finished what Yvette had started.
When he shoved his arm through the fourth man, Varric could hear the small crowd running in their direction with Diorjo Aleister, another teacher like him, at the head of the crowd.
"Crowley what the hell is going on here?!", Diorjo ran to check on the two girls while Varric shook the excess blood off of himself.
Giving his friend a frown he replied, "Hunters, Yvette went feral for a minute, then they pissed me off."
Diorjo looked up at Varric as he removed the bolt from Elizabeth's leg, his blood-red eye sticking out like a sore thumb as always, "Why did hunters come here? They know this school is protected!"
"They must be getting tired of us living peacefully.", Crowley scooped Yvette up into his arms and asked Diorjo to look after Lisa.

When her eyes fluttered open Yvette found herself laying in a bed, it was empty save for the bed and a small desk, she rolled over to stare out the window to her right.
It was daylight and it marked four days since she came here, though she'd been asleep for most of it, that or just locked up in her room because Varric didn't trust her.
After a sigh, she rolled out of bed and took a shower, then changed into the all-white uniform of the schools... the only clothes she had anymore.

Checking her door and finding it unlocked she walked out into the living room where Varric sat at his small table with a single plate of food sitting across from him.
He spotted her right away and gestured to the food, "Breakfast, you need to eat quickly as you and I have things to do today."
Doing as she was told Yvette sat down and began eating, "S-So, when can I start actually going to school here? I'm supposed to be a student, but I haven't been allowed to attend a single class! L-Like what's the point of eating food, we're vampires, don't we only drink blood?"
"You will start tomorrow, but as far as the food we can still get energy from regular food it's just not as good as blood it also helps newborns like you to adjust better.", Varric stood from his seat and checked his watch for the time, "You get ten minutes to finish that up."
Giving a quick nod she cleaned the plate of food, it tasted good, but she could tell it didn't taste as good as it should've.
Varric tapped her shoulder and motioned for her to follow, Varric lived on school property in one of the newer buildings though it was on the smaller side as it was built for teachers.
He led her to the school parking lot then pointed to a car and tossed her a set of keys, they went to the car and Crowley got in the passenger seat and Yvette the driver.
Once Yvette had them out of the parking lot Varric started talking, "I'm going to teach you how to hunt, and while we're at it we are going to pick you up a few things."
"I thought it was too dangerous to leave campus, also what about my family, apartment, and job?", As she said this Yvette came to a stop before going onto the highway heading into the city.
Varric patted her shoulder, "Those have all been taken care of, the story is you were accepted into our prestigious school and left without warning due to excitement."
"That can't possibly work! Especially for people who know me, I would've said something to them!", With a shrug Crowley brushed off her words, ignoring anything else she said for the rest of the drive.

They were roughly in the cities center, where most of the shops were, when Varric had her pull over then quickly led her into an empty alley.
Once they were down a ways he seemed to space out for a minute, his eyes glazed over but still he slowly looked around before coming back and looking right into Yvette's eyes.
He stayed silent for a few moments then pointed to some men walking by in a uniform reminiscent of the police, but on their arms was a fancily stitched red catholic cross, "Those are Templars, you likely saw them when Rosa found you."
"Y-Yeah, they were the ones who took my friends.", Naturally she had an uneasy feeling, "Are they like those hunters from before?"
Shaking his head Crowley responded, "No, Templars act as the peacekeepers for the paranormal society, in fact, our faction has close ties with them however when it comes to hunting it's still best not to let them know you're present."
Quickly nodding she committed his words to memory, "What does hunting entail?"
Placing his hands on her shoulders Varric turned Yvette to be looking right into the crowd, "Focus on the crowd, try to look within them, find one who is healthy with plenty of blood to spare... then whisper to them."
"Um... okay, I'll try.", Doing as he said Yvette looked into the crowd and did her best to focus on them, trying to do as he said, but she furrowed her brow and turned back, "It's not working! Come on I'm sure you can explain it better than that!"
"I could, but what would you learn then? This is the most basic of your abilities, if I hold your hand on this then down the line you'll have a harder time learning your other abilities.", Varric then turned her to face the crowd once again.
Once again she tried doing as he said to no avail, "Can you at least give me a little bit more to work with?"
"All your powers and abilities work on instinct.", Hearing his tone Yvette knew that's all she was getting.
It was all she needed though, after another ten minutes of trying she felt her vision shift some, she focused on the feeling, and soon after everything changed.
Everything looked black, but she could see outlines of people with their hearts and every vein and artery within them pumping with blood.
She began to wonder what her mentor meant by whispering to them, but as she began that though she felt something of a connection with her target and found herself muttering to herself, telling them to come into the alley.
When her vision shifted back to normal the target stood before her in a daze and Varric spoke, "Now just start drinking from them, you'll be able to sense when you should stop, but if you go too long I will pull you off."
Nervously she stepped forwards and brought her mouth close to the woman's neck, as her teeth reached the women's skin a sick feeling formed in her stomach so she stopped and backed up until she hit Crowley, "I-I can't do it, it feels wrong! Please don't make me!"
He smirked and shook his head, "There's plenty of ways to avoid feeding off of someone, there's no harm in not wanting to, but you must know how in case you have no other choice and you must be able to in such a situation."
"So you won't make me right?", Varric shook his head, and as he brushed past Yvette and the woman he motioned for his child to follow.
The rest of their time in the city was spent going to a few stores so, Yvette could get some clothes though she also spent some of her budget on decorations.
Upon returning to their home their was a small box waiting outside Crowley's door addressed to him.
He picked up the box and pushed the door open, walked over to the table to set it down, Yvette hung around wanting to see the contents of the box.
Opening the box Varric's light smile he had formed while shopping with Yvette disappeared, inside was a dagger made of stone covered in strange markings. Holding it up Varric's lip began to curl and his brow furrow, his anger readily apparent.
