《The Attractor》Chapter 194: The Interview

July 2027
The door to the Office opened, a secretary let in a shy young man. He seemed in his early twenties. He had long wet curly hair and while shaved, it was obvious this wasn’t his natural look. Neil, sitting at his desk got up to shake his hand. The Astrophysicist was almost seventy now. The young programmer walked in and sat for what seemed to be an interview.
“I was told you are applying for a job of head of IT,” began the deep voice. Reading his resume, he added, “I see here you hold a here a PhD in artificial intelligence.”
“Yes sir,” replied nervously the man.
He read, “The thesis was on something you call Adaptive Field Programming, I like the title itself. Care to offer more?”
“Well, it is my theory that programming any artificial intelligence is a waste of time, nothing can replace millions of years of evolution, but we can recreate evolution within a computer. Speed it up. That we can do.”
Any lesser man would not have instantly understood the importance, but Neil did. “Young man I think you are onto something. You need a post Ph D in that field, continue why apply for this job? Mister,” he looked down on the resume to read the name, “Mister Vouvelakis,” he read. “Georges Vouvelakis with an S at the end of George. That name rings a bell.”
The man pushed himself up and went to one area of his office where thousands of gifted books were stacked. He began moving them around until he finally found what he was looking for, two larger works. He returned to his desk, opened the first page and ripped off the memory card which looked like a simple credit card.

He handed it over to the young man. “I love a puzzle just as much as the next guy. This is for you. It came with instructions. You must upload this into your project, what ever that is.”
Georges grabbed the card from the physicist’s hands. He was equally puzzled. Neil did not let him read the inscription. He slapped the cover close. On his desk was a phone, he dialed and waited for the connection. The programmer was waiting, eyes wide open. This was the weirdest interview.
“Frank, this is Neil. I have a student here, he needs to finish his project in computer engineering, it’s a Post Doc. Trust me on this. Can you pull some strings? They don’t need much in this field a computer or two.” There were words, polite exchanges of words and he hung up. “You did your Doc in MIT, that was the Dean, he will slut you up to finish. The card, remember.”
The student, puzzled by the full adventure got up and walked out. That was the nature of paradoxes in time, they were impossible to lift.
The moment the door closed, Neil reread the author’s card. There was something here. He flipped the first page and began the long read and did not like what he found.

The Legion of Nothing
Nick Klein is your average high school geek--if you can still count as average when your grandfather is a retired superhero, and you've been trained in the martial arts by his friend, a mysterious, immortal mercenary. After his grandfather dies, Nick inherits the last version of the Rocket suit, powered armor that allows him to shrug off bullets, smash through walls, and manipulate sound. Along with it comes the base of his grandfather's superhero team including the team's jet and trophies from forty years of fighting criminals and aliens. Together, Nick and his friends, descendants of his grandfather's teammates, attempt to bring back a superhero team that was originally formed during World War 2. Along the way they'll face the normal problems of high school (bullies, homework, and dating), and the less normal problems like supervillians and mysteries leftover from their grandparents' past. As a story, it uses the conventions of all eras of comics from the 1940s on, ranging from serious to silly. If you're hoping for a grim and gritty story, this isn't it. The Legion of Nothing first debuted on my website legionofnothing.com in 2007. In that period it's updated more than 900 times, is still running, and has had millions of pageviews. The first two years have been released as an ebook, receiving good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. I hope you'll enjoy it, and that you'll review it and comment. You can also vote for it on Top Web Fiction and rate it on Web Fiction Guide. Member of The Order of Phantasmal Architects.

The Demon of Shadows (Hiatus)
Spartans. Genetically modified supersoldiers who participated in the spartan program, which aimed to reinforce and compensate for the humans capability of emotion in order to create the ideal supersoldier. The program itself resulting in the implantation of a limiter for a certain individual, which acted in limiting that persons emotions. Replacing it with a cold logical based calculative mindscape. The limiter aimed to support the ideal supersoldier in completing the objectives assigned to them. Be it mass slaughter, or assasination. One such man who had volunteered to participate in the program to provide data in return for a large sum of money to save a precious friend, has his life lost in battle after years of service and mindless violence. Death, however, was something he usually gave, not to receive. So when death comes to take his life, he awaits in silence, only to be dumbfounded at what is to happen next. This is the story of Nicholas Gray, the Shadow Demon. Note: Story is based on other LitRPGs found on the site such as Dante's Immortality, Necromancer and Co, etc. and on Halo for the majority of the first chapter and possibly later on down the road, I only borrowed things such as the armour and weapons used in the game itself and all credit goes to them for that kind of stuff. I will also perhaps use it to explain his backstroy to further character progression if I can. The cover photo was also a picture I found on the internet and if you wish for credit or for me to take it down just say so and i'll do it as fast as possible. I also don't have a set schedule, and this is just being used to improve my grammar and just as a hobby, nothing more. I will also appreciate feedback in regards to grammar, style, and story in general as this is the first time I have created a story apart from at school, hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it!

Fire and Shadows. Legend of the breaker. (Hiatus until ??)
Traditions lost, books burned, ancient knowledge forever spurned. It began with fire, the great Sirionean, all dominating desert creating pyre. And it ended thusly just aswell, t'was the great Empire's deathknell. The crackling of the burning books, dangling corpses on rusty hooks. The yellow streets of Heabury proper, colored red with human copper. -? S.V, Scholar of Dawn.' -- Author note: Hi, SeV here. I'm not a fan of writing my entire story premise in the synopsis. For that, read the prologue and chapter 1. Suffice it to say that I think it's a cool idea and I already have a few things planned and a world sort of formed in my mind. I like Epic fantasy, lightnovels with OP MCs, Litrpg, sci-fi, any many other things. This story is written for myself, so it may include all sorts of diffent elements and character interactions and even experimental things that I'm trying out as a writer in order to improve. My intention with this is to pretty much post as I write, and acquire feedback from you folks in the process. I of course hope you like my story, but feel free to criticize anything since this is a project to improve myself. Even if it isn't strictly criticism, any feedback positive or negative is welcome since I am interested in what other people think of my writing style and what I can improve on. Since it's growing generically I'll be interested in your thoughts and speculations on future events and any suggestions moving forward will be taken into consideration. Hope you enjoy my stuff. - SeV
