《The Final Dream》Chapter 4

“Don’t you dare try to compare yourself to me! You are nothing but a dog sent by your masters to do their bidding,” snapped Walter. “I earned my place here and I went through the inferno of hell to stand where I do today! What did you do except bend over and take it like a common whore!”
You are taken aback by this sudden outrage. You thought that the captain was meek but now you can see the beast that lurks inside. Examining Bronx quickly, you notice his hand clutching the hilt of the blade at his side.
The sword he is gripping looks ornate though. The metal shines brightly like silver in the morning light. A few gemstones are set along the cross-guard, each one a different colour. This single piece of equipment looks to be the most expensive thing Bronx owns. Just looking at the sword makes you believe that it must possess some magical properties. The captain may be useless as a law enforcer but he could probably hold his own in a fight against a small horde of fiends, especially when consumed by the anger you see now, though you feel he no barbarian.
You place your hands up in surrender and apologize for offending him in some way. The captain relaxes a bit and broadens his shoulders looking pleased with himself.
“As long as you know that I’m the one who runs the show around here and you don’t go around doing things without my permission, we’ll get along swimmingly,” grins Walter. “I suggest you remain quiet for the rest of our walk to allow myself to sweeten my mood.”
The two of you continue forward with Walter Bronx seeming to stand just a little bit taller than before and his feet moving swiftly.

Acquired Clue: Authoritative Captain
Walter Bronx, the captain of Alderbrand’s guard has only proven to harbor a grudge against you and now sees you as a tool for him to use. He wants you to report your every move to him and expects that you tell him of all plans you may have during the investigation.
He will help you with tasks he agrees to but will find a way to slight you if you do not heed his words.
Finally, after what seems like an eternity, you arrive at the scene of the crime. From a glance, you notice a few things without the need to investigate. The first, is that the crime happened in an isolated location as the house before you is further from the city’s center than other homes. Secondly, the area seems to be a poorer neighbourhood. And the most obvious but final observation is that a fire occurred within this building as you can’t see burn marks originating from the outside of the home.
Acquired Clue: Indoor Arson
You are able to detect that the fire originated from inside the building making the investigation for clues inside harder than clues outsides. This also leads you to believe that the arsonist had a way into and out of the building but you won’t know more without a thorough check.
You walk up to the house and await background information before you begin investigating.

Mud's Mission
The story begins with an elderly hermit mage living on the outskirts of a labyrinth town. Invoking spellwork that is trivial for a mage of his caliber, he creates a simple mud automaton to aid him in household chores. However, in the middle of his efforts, something goes wrong; his ancient heart finally fails. Now, half complete and with limited understanding of the world, an artificial being of mud stirs. Despite its limitations, it has a mission to fulfill. The last instructions of a dying creator. "Defend my home, and my possessions." To the mechanical mind of Mud, only absolute perfection is acceptable when fulfilling the orders of The Master. Mud will make sure nothing in the universe will ever threaten The Master's home! --- This fiction contains RPG elements such as skills and levels. The protagonist has an inhuman mind and acts on instincts and preferences that are completely different from those of a normal human, and may at times fly in the face of common sense. The general tone is lighthearted, but there are some scenes with disturbing content such as mind control and references to torture. Join our Discord to discuss the novel or chat with the author.

Madness Led by the Hands
‘Great, no… splendid. It was for naught.’ ‘Naught? Depends. If your desire is to send an army of killers our family’s way, yes indeed. If it’s plain survival you seek, then no.’ ‘They don’t coexist?’ ‘What… don’t tell me you’re still all groggy from the fall. Perhaps in novels, but real life is much tougher–––many more times a drag than anyone can possibly imagine. If dusty history is not a reliable teacher for you, then the pandemic surely took that place. At least that one has the advantage you needn’t be literate to savvy how reality always trumps imagination.’ ‘Whatever you say, whatever you say. So… what now?’ ‘Now? Isn’t it obvious? Now we shall survive. And live a good life.’ ‘Ohh… pretty much everything here has something against this little weird wish of ours. Might you consider?’ ‘Then pretty much everything here is a goner.’ ‘Hm, I don’t like the sound of that. Too much trouble, you see. I’d prefer laying low somewhere safe.’ ‘…nobody told you it’s mutually exclusive, no–––or did you forget about that too?’ ‘Fine, then I wish my future enemies all the best.’ ‘They are undeserving of your pity.’ ‘Of course not. That unlucky bunch won’t ever comprehend the reason behind their demise. Just let me smoke in peace and offer my condolence in advance.’ ‘Idem, let me study alchemy, unobstructed by all, if possible. This also includes you. By the way, are you sure you smoke to offer condolences? It seems like an excuse to me.’ ‘I-it is none. Plain truth, you see?’ ‘Seriously, why did I even ask...?’

This ultimate housemaid would stop at nothing until the job was done. It didn’t matter if the manor lay ruined for many years, it didn’t matter if all the guests could bring about the end of the world, it doubly didn’t matter that Nemo was a low-level scrub, whatever that meant. She would level up, get better at fixing things, and nothing would stop her from having the Count take her on an adventure! Now, where did the last giant floating eyeball go? next arc release date: indefinite hiatus Disclaimer: the current cover is a place-holder stock photo taken from Stockfresh. Hattoran Chronicle
There is a hostile sky above me. Man will never conquer space. He may live in it, but he will never conquer it. The sky above is void, and very black, and very hostile. -- Joseph Kittinger A pair of extragalactic supersoldiers are betrayed and stranded in the Milky Way at the end of the 29th century, potentially shaking the balance of power within the galaxy, but there's far more going on than anyone realizes. Allies are few in a galaxy eager to learn their secrets, and their ancient enemy continues to threaten the existence of the entire universe. The two Hattorans are forced to rely on each other and a few unlikely allies to solve a problem they for once can't simply fight their way out of.(Technically Star Trek fanfic but outside of existing storylines and I'm considering how easily the serial numbers could be filed off) This is all in progress and constructive feedback is strongly encouraged! I've got a lot in the air as I bring this all together.
