《World 2.0(DROPPED)》Chapter 19: Arriving at the mansion

Sleep is the best thing in this world.
Do you want to know why? Dreaming.
When you dream, you can see your old memories. You can look into your past, and even interact with them. You could change things, and see how it would go.
But the most important of all. You can meet the ones you cared about again.
A few years back, my wife died of the Sigil Plague. While I'm glad we quarantined everybody affected in time, doing it to my wife was one of the hardest things that I have ever experienced.
That's why sleeping is the best things in the world. I can go back to the times where everything was great. Sure, we had a few problems running the city, but together we could easily take them all on.
She was a genius. She could see a solution to every problem in minutes of encountering them. With her help, the city prospered. What started as a small town with 750 people quickly grew into 7500 people.
She really was the greatest woman that I had ever met.
“LORD WOLFSBANE”
I wake up from my dream.
I open my eyes and look out the window. It's still dark outside.
The person that woke me up better have a good excuse, or in firing him before he sees the sun.
I look over to the person who woke me up. It's one of the guards that guard the outside of the mansion. He was panting and looked as if he had just run a marathon.
“WHAT IS YOUR EXCUSE TO-”, I begin to shout at him, but he shouts louder.
“YOUR DAUGHTER, MY LORD! YOUR DAUGHTER”, He shouts at me.
Elora!?
“What about my daughter?!” I shout again, but this time, a little quieter.
“SHE IS BACK, MY LORD! SHE ESCAPED!”, He shouted at me.
I quickly roll to the side of my bed and begin putting clothes on. Wouldn't want to meet my daughter in my undies.
“Give me all the details that you know”, I say to him.
“Your daughter was rescued by two people. One male human and one male half-elf-”, he begins to explain, but I stop him mid-sentence.
“What kind of half-elf?”, I ask him, in a serious voice.

If it was one of the dark elves, I wasn't sure if I was gonna reward him or kill him.
“I am not sure, my lord”, the guard answered, with a quivering voice.
That's not good. Maybe I should just ask the Half-elf myself. Or maybe…
“The half-elf skin color. What was it?”, I asked him.
If its a darker skin color, I will have to ask him myself.
“The half-elf skin color was light, my lord”, the guard answered.
Good.
“Okay, continue with the description”, I ordered the guard.
“The male human is currently unconscious. The healer is checking him, but he believes that its just mana-exhaustion. The half-elf and your daughter is currently located in the waiting room”, the guard finished explaining right as I finished with the last clothing.
“The waiting room, you say?”, I ask him.
“Yes, my lord. Shall I foll-”
I had already left before he finished talking.
Elora and I were in the waiting room. Jack had been taken by the healer to check him up. While I didn't want to let them take him, Elora assured me that he would be safe with them.
Ten minutes ago, we had finally reached the city without even getting close to being caught by the bandits. Jacks magical vines worked like a charm.
When we got to the city, we didn't stop at the entrance. I just ran by the guards as fast as I could while looking around for the mansion. Most of the buildings here were two stories tall, so I couldn't figure out which way to go. Luckily, I had Elora to guide me through the streets. She told me which way to run, while I focused on not being caught by the guards and not falling face first into the ground.
Then we finally reached the mansion and got faced with another problem.
The guards at the door wouldn't let us in. Elora tried to convince them that she was the lord's daughter, but they were not buying it. They thought that she was an imposter looking to get some money out of their lord, so they told her to get lost.
After Elora began shouting at them, one of the higher ranked guards came. He recognized her instantly and ordered one of the guards that didn't recognize her to get the lord as fast as he could.

The higher ranked guard looked at Jack for a moment before ordering another guard to get a healer. While I tried to explain that he just had mana exhaustion, the guard still wanted him to be checked out.
A healer came and took Jack someplace. I wanted to follow the healer, Elora asked me to stay. While I still wanted to follow, I didn't want to say no to Elora. While we did rescue her, she was nobility. She could put us in jail for saying no to her.
The higher ranked guard followed us to the waiting room and asked us to stay there.
We didn't have to wait there for long.
After two minutes we both heard a shout coming from behind the door.
“My dearest daughter!”, a male voice shouted. The voice became louder as he neared the door.
The door springs open, and a tall man rushes inside. The man lunges for Elora, and she jumps from her seat towards him.
They reach each other in a heartfelt hug.
They stay in that position for about 30 seconds before I began hearing soft crying noises coming from them.
Time to leave.
I walked out of the room without making a single sound, and slowly closed the door behind me.
Outside the door was a slightly old man waiting for me.
He had the beginning of wrinkles and had completely grey hair. I guessed that he was just about in his late fifties. Although he was old, he stood with no effort. If he didn't have the obvious signs of age, I would have thought he was in his late twenties.
“Thank you for saving the lord's daughter from those bloody bandits. We will surely celebrate your success later, but for now, I will show you to your room. And before you ask, you will be sharing the room as your little friend”, he said, in a grateful voice.
“Did you find anything wrong with him?”, I ask him.
“Your friend? No, he's fine. He just had a slightly severe case of mana-exhaustion. With a good night's sleep, he will be as good as new”, he answered, with a reassuring voice.
Good. As long as Jack is fine, everything is fine.
“If you would follow me, I will show you to your room”, he said.
The old man begins walking to my room, and I follow him.
The walk to the room only takes about five minutes. This place wasn't as big as Hel´s, and it would probably only take 10 minutes to walk one from end of the mansion to the other end of the mansion.
We reached the room, and I walked inside.
Inside the room, I saw the basic stuff that you would expect from it. It had a bed, a table, a couple of chairs, and a king-sized bed.
There was one thing I didn't understand. Why one bed? He already knew that I wanted to share a room with Jack, so why did he give us a single bed. I even saw some rooms with two beds each.
I turn around and face the old man.
“Is everything in order?”, the old man asked.
“Why is there only one bed when I said that I would like to share a room? Shouldn't there be two beds?”, I asked him.
The old man looked at me for a couple of seconds before sighing.
“It seems that there has been some miscommunication. When you said you wanted to share rooms with your friend, we thought that you and your friend had a relationship. Would you like to move rooms?”, the old man asked.
They really didn't understand my intentions. I wanted to share rooms with him so that I could protect him fast in an emergency.
I look back at the bed. Jack was there sleeping.
“No, it's okay. Wouldn't want my friend to not get a good night's sleep”, I say, and close the door in the old man's face.
I hear the old man mutter “Bloody moon elves” before walking away.
I go over to the bed and lie down.
It has been some time since I had some actual sleep.
And with that, I drifted off.

After all if such awareness was available before the proper Brain matter was grown them how would one gain consciousness? Well there is only one simple and miraculous word to describe it. Magic. Whether it was a highly organized magic system, a chaotic mash of dark arts, or some divine intervention it could be considered to be magic non the less. And magic? Well one had plenty of time in the womb to discover and train it. And that was exactly what one would do if they found themselves in such a situation! Thanks to WifuLabs for the cover.
