[seaman's bane, the Kraken]

In the sea there lurk many terrors and horrors unimaginable. Thankfully most stay away from the surface and even less are known to the common man. One that is known though is the Kraken.

Some scholars call them gigantic surface squid. Some sapient sea species and adventurous adventurers call them "too much of a coward to stay in the deep". The reason for that name is simple. Kraken may be terrifying to common man but their main advantage is their size and tentacles, and that is only near the surface because in the deep they are considered medium sized and their tentacles are a hindrance.

Against ships that can't manoeuvre like a living being they are a menace but even then can be driven off.

The Kraken also have a rumor of being hard to near impossible to kill, that is because they will run away the moment they feel unsafe. They truly are simple squids.

That is knowledge many adventures near the sea know, but they never tell that to the common seafarer. Why? Because they get overconfident and challenge the deep to show them something truly terrifying, and the deep will deliver, be it an underwater current, work of a god or simply bad luck, the deep will answer.

It is not known why it answers but that knowledge isn't pursued in fear of more happening.

In conclusion the common man is left to fear the simple things like Kraken as to not tempt fate to show worse things.
