Chapter 22: Trouble Inside The City Walls
———Two weeks ago.
“Alright, let me get our stub, I’ll be right back.”
While scratching the back of his head, Kansouke left our table.
He glanced at my side before leaving, yet he did not say anything.
At least until earlier, I could pretend that it did not bothered me. However his last gaze that he left me behind makes all the air in this room heavier, weighing me down.
Does Kansouke perhaps hate me now?
Perhaps I’ve been too jealous.
Perhaps that’s how men normally react.
Or perhaps… he merely fed me with lies?
No, Kansouke isn’t like that.
I shook my head as I denied that fact.
In my entire life, I’ve never felt so happy until I’ve met him. His kindness was a treatment I do not deserve. Not counting how many people I’ve killed, I’ve also done some very bad things. If he knew, he’ll surely hate me.
“Eh, where did Kansouke disappeared to?”
Did this woman not heard what he just said or does she merely want me to pay attention?
Annoying.
The next time she speaks, I should plunge this fork on her neck. Watch her writhe in agony as her life slowly spills out of her throat. Or should I chopped her body parts to pieces? What could inflict the most pain?
“………Meles?? Meles—”
She shrugged my shoulders.
I squeeze my hand into fist, and the next moment, I already had a fork leveled at her neck. With a slight push, it would no doubt end her life like how I want to.
“…?”
She stares at me in silence, confused at what just occurred.
“Nevermind, where’s Kansouke?”
I pulled my hand and looked around.
Any traces of Kansouke are nowhere to be found indeed.
“He just vanished all of a sudden. Perhaps he left without telling us?”
Kansouke left?
I dropped the fork unconsciously and it hits the floor with a *thud*.
Her words echoed in my mind repeatedly.
I jump back, across the table, and went out of the bar in a rush.
“Meles!”
Her voice erupted in my mind again, but I only ran as fast as I can towards the door. I sprinted down the dark streets, through the group of people, until I’ve reached our inn.
This should be the only possible place for him to go, right? If he isn’t here, then does that mean that he abandoned me?

Fear prickles inside me, in my chest, in my head, and in my hands.
What if he isn’t in our room? What will I do then?
No, when I see him again, I’ll apologize.
Then he’ll pat my head and he’ll forgive me.
However, just when my hand was about to reach for the doorknob, a sudden gaze jolted my entire body. And judging from the look they gave me, they did it on purpose.
Even at the grip of my concussion, I knew it was a waste of breath. Though it might be a crowded area, it fails to hide its presence full of malicious intent. This is the same type of gaze that I’ve experienced back in the guild.
I took a step back from the door.
Were they the reason why Kansouke suddenly disappeared? Even if they weren’t, these hoodlums would attack us at some point. Leaving them alone right now would spell disasters later on. Nip the problem bud while their still growing.
Still, to attack me at nighttime. They really are clueless fools.
I turned around and walked with no apparent destination, and the weird gazes followed suit. They must be really intent on troubling me seeing it’s already nighttime and they’re still moving around. Or is it actually the perfect time for them?
Nonetheless, to prevent arousing suspicion, I led the people following me around to a dark street. A type of secluded area where nobody will hear your scream.
I cannot turn away from my fate. The stench of death follows me like a shadow. There is no escaping this life. But, since I decided to be at his side, I am prepared to do whatever is appropriate in order to do so.
“Demon bitch…”
One, two, a total of six pigs surround me, licking their lips in anticipation of something. I recognized most of them, especially this damn bastard that angered Kansouke, his death shall not be painless.
The familiar beat of danger pump through my chest wildly.
“Is that all?”
They froze at my words. Then, they looked at each other as they threw out hearty laughs.
“Hahaha, she doesn’t even have a weapon.”
“Don’t ruin her face too much. I bet a demon like her will do wonders in bed, even when the body is nothing but a cold corpse.”
“Hehe, got it boss.”
The thugs had wicked grin plastered across their faces as I listened to them yammer on. Kill me and rape me. That’s how their minds work. Do these hooligans expect me to cower in horror?

Oh well, they are merely trashes, nobody will hate me for their deaths.
“Let fountains of blood rain from my claws!”
“H.Help!!”
“Graaa!!”
It became a scene of carnage. These bastards couldn’t even react as they topple down the ground, their limbs flying everywhere. With each slash, blood sprayed in the air, like it was a natural spring water. My wind claws played around, slashing two more men in half before the other pig beside him could make sense of what’s going on.
“De-Demon!!”
One of them screamed, frustrated, as I wipe some of his blood from my face. His gore trailed the dirt while he dragged his wounded body across the ground. With both of his legs missing, it’s undoubtedly that he could escape his death.
“You think you’re getting away with this?”
As I’m not so naive to take chances, I quickly rushed to his direction, and attacked him from his flank.
“Gugaaaa!!”
And then, the painful scream of a pig who had lost everything echoed in my ears. In a matter of seconds only the leader of the pigs was left standing.
He glares at me, and even when he glares, his eyes look horrified.
“You monster! Don’t come any closer!”
He squeezes his sword tightly while showing a brave front. Although no matter how much he tries he to hide his trembling, there is no escaping the fear I’ve implanted in his brain.
“Oh, I’m sorry, weren’t you planning to violate this monster just now? Hmm?”
“………You damn demon!!”
The pig accepted my sarcasm at face value and angrily lunges at me.
How foolish! I purposely chose those words to flame his fury.
I stayed at my position, glancing over at the upset guy.
I calmly parried his blow and with a single swipe of my claws, his sword arm was severed!
You see, an upset person’s attack are not a threat if you calmed down.
The pig quickly falls to his knees while he tries his damnest to prevent any more blood from pouring.
The wretched thug cowered on the ground and begged me for his life.
“I… Let me live! I promise not to show my face around you! I’ll quietly disappear! I won’t tell a single soul about this! I promise!!”
As soon as I approached him and level my claw up in the air, he peed his pants. Witnessing a grown man like him do that, I couldn’t help but laugh inside. The pig was reduced to an even more miserable sight.
Still, promises are meant to be broken. There is no use to ask for forgiveness in these types of situations. With his age and experience, you would think he knows much better than that, but I guess fear has already blockaded his thoughts from thinking rationally.
But then again, I’m not one to speak about rationality.
“Answer me one thing before I let you go. Do you have any other accomplices?”
“No, no more! It was just us six!”
He answered me without hesitation. This piece of scum didn’t even contain any sort of loyalty towards his dead comrades.
Such hypocrisy makes me want to vomit.
With the necessary information in hand, there was no need to keep him alive any longer.
“I see. Thank you very much for your honesty.”
“IYAAA!!”
The grown man squealed like a little girl after noticing me spew out such an evil expression. With another flashed of my claws, the pig’s head rolled over on the ground. His lifeless body collapse on the dirt while spraying his disgusting gore all over me.
That fountain of blood eventually found its way in my mouth and hmm…… A taste that I’ve almost forgotten. Finally, all of the filthy animals had been dealt with.
Haha, just like back in the orphanage, I cannot escape from this life.
This is who I am!
*Fwing!*
My body went rigid due to the enthrallment I haven’t felt in a long time. The next moment, my ear stings, and blood tickles my skin.
“What…?”
Somebody just attempted to kill me. Whoever this person is, will DIE!
I tilted my head and looked at my side. Standing with her sword drawn, the knight took a stance.
So she’s the one eh?
Shifting her blade downward with herself, the knight stare at me silently. She gave such a look as if she’s turning me to stone.
Finally, an opponent where I could test this arts of mine. Thinking on how I should kill her made me smile.
“I do not know what happened as to what have caused this carnage, but I will not let you get away for killing on our soil.”
“Try and stop me, if you can.”
I recover my balance and weaved through side to side as I approach. Her eyes are still on mine. For some reason, my throat is dry. I try to swallow, and my vision sways.
As I shook my head in an attempt to break free from this illusion, she disappeared from my sight.
Where—
Something flashed in the air, and then I heard a thud, followed by a consuming darkness.

Don't hate Meles okay? xD

Waking Up
The story of Larin the Builder in the aftermath of Awakening This short story is the epilogue of Awakening, the first book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. This epilogue is a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers between books without being necessary to the main storyline.Waking Up follows the story of Larin, who is alive but unconscious after her ordeal in the Nine Hells. She awakens in A'lara City a few days later and recuperates under the steadfast care of her repentant friend Jorn.As she reacclimates to her waking state, Larin struggles with her gruesome memories of the Hells and her decision to conceal them from Jorn. This story answers the question, Is Larin all right? with a resounding yes, and some storms on the horizon. It also raises the question, What happened to her down there? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Falling Down, about Larin's ordeal in the Nine Hells. Praise for Waking Up and Falling Down: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between Waking Up and Falling Down is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well.-- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
