Chapter 21.5: Her Feelings
On the other side of the continent, where a demon reigns supreme. A day where the blinding sun and hard blue sky provide the illusion of warmth.
While progressing through the pile of papers stacked on her side, the beauty heaved a sigh. She wore a dark dress with golden linings at the lower end, and the strapless bodice accented at her empire waist complimented her shapely figure.
“There’s too many things on my plate lately. I wonder how he’s faring these days?”
Her long silver hair fluttered silently to the gentle breeze flowing through from her side, right across the room, leading to her vast terrace.
Elmina grabbed her feather pen sitting on its black ink and went through one paper to the other at a speed where her hand is basically leaving an after image.
“Not even a single letter after eight years… Hmph. He’s taking our promise too seriously,” Elmina said to nobody in particular.
“Although Your Highness says that, you’re actually very happy about it, aren’t you?”
With a single *poof*, all of that heat accumulating in her cheeks exploded, immediately dying her face in embarrassment.
Elmina averted her eyes to look far away. “Rune… Have I not told you before to avoid sneaking up on me like that?”
The demon dressed in a maid outfit shifted her spectacles, a pair of crimson eyes squinted sharply inside. “For the thirteenth Demon Lord to be infatuated on a single human boy, the future of us Demons is rather bleak.”
Elmina leaned her back against her chair while taking a deep breath. “Perhaps.”
The past few days of work had taken its toll on her body. It’s as if her bones would shatter as she stretches her arms due to stiffness.
“That aside, I came bearing ill news,” Rune handed Elmina a different stack of paper clustered together as a type of report. “The humans demanded that we compensate for the damage she’s done at least.”

“If it’s something as trivial as compensation, then I’m sure you’re capable enough to handle it yourself?”
“Indeed. However…”
Just from hearing Rune’s report, Elmina already lost the interest to flipped through the pages. But since her trusted vassal brought it all the way here to get her attention, there must be something special about it.
“Hmm… Sophia Meles………” Elmina flipped through the pages.
“……….”
Rune did nothing but stand like a statue, silently waiting for Elmina to finish.
“………………… What?!” As soon as her eyes read that “certain” part of the report, Elmina stood up from her chair, and the sudden surge of dark energy bursting from inside her threw everything else to a complete mess.
Even her vassal, Rune, had to flinched away from the oppressive energy emanating from her body.
“Rune… how accurate is this report?” Elmina asked in an almost trembling voice.
“According to our intelligence team, it should be “fairly” accurate.”
“And how accurate is “fairly” ?”
Elmina’s question made Rune broke out in cold sweat. Noticing this, Elmina suppressed her feelings inside and sat on her chair once more.
“Sophia Meles? Did she properly signed the papers to cross the borders legally?”
“I’m afraid not, and the humans were also insisting that she’s a spy.”
“Tsk.”
Elmina bit on her lips, and a weird habit resurfaced.
*tap tap tap tap tap……*
Gradually, her foot tapping shook the entire castle, as if an earthquake of a large magnitude split its very foundings in twain.
“Your Highness, please calm yourself…” Rune spoke in a distressed voice. She could barely contain herself with the intense shaking.
—Tap!*
Somehow, Elmina stopped, yet her face wasn’t smiling at all. “A remnant of war, eh? Send a group to pick her up at once and make sure everything else were properly compensated before they return.”
“I hear and obey.”
Rune faded into the background like an obscurity, and in a single moment, she completely disappeared, leaving nothing but a gust of wind.

Elmina sighed. “Now, how am I supposed to clean this?”
Looking around, her once tidy office turned into pile of garbage. More importantly, the paperworks that she needed to go through and sign till the end of the day were already drenched in blank ink. There’s no saving them anymore.
*Dogaaaan!*
Suddenly, the door was flung open by a kick, stealing Elmina’s attention.
“Mother! Have you lost your temper once again? The servants are distressed, they thought the castle was under heavy siege.”
“Ermm, I’m sorry.”
The cheeky girl walked to her with grace, puffing her chest out wide, even though she had nothing to boast about. The silver strands of the girl’s hair and her lavender pupils strikes an obvious resemblance, yet the little girl was missing the two things that counts her amongst the demon race.
“And your office is a mess! How very unlady like of you, my Mother. Grandma would surely be sad.”
From her haughty tone and the way she handles herself, Elmina still couldn’t believe that this girl is her daughter. Her impudence definitely resembles a certain boy in her memories.
Elmina passed a hand on her forehead. “Emeria, didn’t I tell you to call me Mama instead?”
“Mother, I am seven years old and you expect a lady of my age to babble such childishness?” Emeria replied while picking up the books scattered on the floor.
“What “lady” are you talking about?! It’s exactly because you’re at that age that you need to act cute!” Arguing with her daughter made her head hurt even further. While showing a depressed smile, Elmina continued. “Seriously, what are your tutors teaching you?”
How she wished for her daughter to jump in her arms, like any other child would at her age, yet her daughter never showed that type of emotion. At the age of five, it’s as if she’s already found a goal in her life, and the results of that are what she sees right now.
But deep inside her, she’s very proud of her little girl. She’s her “daughter” after all. She never once thought of her as a mistake just because of what happened that “night”.
On the outside, Elmina could only smile wryly while watching her daughter clean up her mess.
“?!”
———Yet a concentrated piece of light vying for their attention flashed outside. It was almost blinding. Too blinding to see.
Elmina stood up and rushed to her terrace. She held onto the smooth surface of their gemstone railings while watching the source of this blinding light.
Like a spear, a beam of light was shot from the ground that shattered the clouds and soon pierced the heavens. It was far away, very far away from her. It came from the other side of the continent, yet they’re still able to witness this glorious sight.
‘Just how big is that light?’ Elmina asked herself.
“Mother, what is that light?” Dumbfounded at the same view, Emeria voiced a question beside her. Her tiny fingers wrapped around the intertwining design of their terrace’s fence.
“I'm afraid I do not know.”
Elmina could only reply in such a manner. Such a sight was also a first for her.
The unconditional silence that followed shivered through her. While watching the view atop of the castle, she looked beyond the clouds and imagined… the face of the boy whom she met eight years ago.
With an innocent smile on her face, she laughs.
“Could it be Kansouke? Haha, it can’t be… right?”
Little does she knows, how this light will change their lives from now on.

Yin-Yang
Mages in North America seem to have it all – typically from well-off families, and able to manipulate their environment in ways most of the world would never believe. They don’t even have to bother with the mundane details of life like housework, thanks to their sensitives, who also make a useful source for extra magical energy. After all, sensitives have no use for it themselves, and if mages weren’t meant to make use of it, then the sensitives would obviously have some way to prevent that. That a mage can transform a sensitive physically, with no restrictions beyond overall mass and basic biological viability, whereas magic tends not to work directly on any other living thing, is only further proof. And look at the way they live on their own, barely a step above animals. It’s better for them to belong to a mage. Sensitives in North America live on the edge of society and survival – typically so paranoid they avoid hospitals and anything else that could lead to being tracked, many of them with little or no education and no legal identity or existence. Mages exist, and mages want sensitives for some reason, but no one ever comes back to explain what that reason is. Waiting every day for the hunters to notice them doesn’t lead to much motivation or hope for the future. And once they’re captured, they’re the property of someone with a terrifying amount of power over them. Anything is better than capture. Mages are born to be the masters, and sensitives are born victims. Or are they? Jax’s life is turned upside-down when he’s caught by the hunters and sold to a mage. Andreas is still mourning for his previous sensitive, though, unconsciously creating a difficult standard for Jax to live up to, all the more so while still struggling to come to terms with this new reality as Andreas’ sensitive. A runaway sensitive isn’t what Van expects at the mental health centre. Is this a hunter trap, set for him and the rest of the Donovan family by the hunters? The hunters would, after all, love to see them cross the line openly and finally do something they can be charged with. Either way, Miranda’s genuinely in trouble, and he can’t just abandon her to it. Snatching a sensitive out from under the hunters and hiding her is odd behaviour for a mage – but then, Catherine is an odd mage, living in disgrace in the old servants’ quarters of her grandmother’s house, responsible for cooking and housework. Lila owes Catherine her freedom; is there a way to help Catherine achieve her own, and at what price? Tension is building between traditionally-minded mages and those advocating change, and something has to break. *** Yin-Yang includes a small amount of profanity and no graphic sex or on-screen physical violence. However, sex and gender roles and relationships within the mage/sensitive subculture are non-traditional in mainstream North American terms. The key criterion in a primary relationship is not relative sex or gender, but the pairing of mage and sensitive; given the transformation of sensitives by their mages, physical sex is non-absolute for a sensitive, and gender identity can vary as in anyone else. *** *** The way mages treat sensitives is extremely varied and, in some cases is outright abusive. The struggle against that is pretty much the point of the book. It is NOT grimdark or misery-porn! However, if you will be triggered by this, please, don't read Yin-Yang! *** Complete stand-alone novel, 153K words! Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
