《Wolves are Meant to Run Wild》A Meal

I huff as I claw my way up the incline. Looking back, I take a mental note of where the river is so that I can find it later.

I pull myself fully from the riverbank grimacing at the feeling of caked-on mud and blood clinging to my fur.

I sit down with a heavy thump, grunting. A cloud of orange-ish brown dust shakes off of me.

I scan the area, trying to deduce where I am. My surroundings are filled with trees and bushes, logs and rocks. My ears twitch at the sound of bird-song.

Alright, so I'm in a forest, obviously. The river isn't that deep, by the looks of it- only five or six feet at its deepest, by my estimate. And the flora is fairly common, both evergreens and deciduous trees, although more of the latter than the former... the birds sound like sparrows, although they could be robins. I'm no expert.

I hum, thinking it over. I was probably about fifteen kilometres away from town, but that's just an estimate. I could be weeks away for all I know. Last night is a bit of a blur.

I'm pulled from my musings by my stomach growling. I only now notice the familiar pangs of hunger clawing at me.

I look around, thinking. I don't exactly have anything on hand... but, I am in a forest, and I am a wolf, and wolves eat meat, so...

humming to myself, I stand. I turn and begin to walk, scanning the area for food.

How do wolves even find food? They have a really good sense of smell, don't they? Or, don't we, rather.

Pausing, I lower my head to the ground and take a tentative sniff. I blink as I try to work through the scents in the air. Plants, mostly... rock, water, rain, mud... ooh, what's that?

I sniff a few more times, walking around a bit. After some time, I find a stronger patch of the scent. Confident that I can follow the trail from here, I continue along.

Strolling along, I keep an eye out for whatever it is that I'm tracking. I step over a log, pausing to sniff around again before continuing.

After some time and effort, I manage to find a hole in the ground. Sniffing around the burrow, I begin to dig. I could smell the thing inside and I was rather determined to get to it after all the time I spent tracking it.

After I dug it up enough, I stuck my paw into the burrow, groping around for... something.

I perk up as my paw makes contact with something. I dig my claws into it, hearing a loud squeak. I grunt as the creature begins to viciously kick at me. I pull my paw back, claws still buried in the hide of the creature.

I pin it with my paw as soon as I get it out. It was a rather large rabbit, one that kicked out like mad and screamed like the devil.

I tilt my head, wondering how to kill it. I shrug, lunging forward and biting down on its neck as hard as I could. Hearing a snap, I pull back, sniffing at the now-dead rodent.

I grimace, at the feeling of hot blood on my muzzle. Huffing, I lean down and tentatively rip a chunk of it out. Chewing a bit, I swallow, blinking.

It wasn't half bad. It was salty and juicy with a gamey hint to it. I swallow the fur with a grimace before pinning the carcass and ripping out another chunk of flesh.

I can't help but wonder: What now? I click my tongue, looking around.
