《Into the void》Chapter 36: Hunted

My muscles ached, and my bones were heavy. My hands were coated in blood. My heart beat rapidly in my chest as my senses strained, looking for the next opponent.
Whoever these people were, they were tough to fight. They had come to my house suddenly and started talking about some violation of the undead code.
I hadn't let them finish.
I had slammed my fist into the face of the one who spoke before slamming the door shut and running to the living room.
They had followed suit, and carnage was unleashed.
Luckily enough, Alice hadn't been there, so I had been able to go all out.
The first 6 agents that had come had been shredded apart by me. Their training was good, but with my title, killing them had been a breeze.
The next four had been the actual challenge. But a knife in the eye of one and crushing the skull of another had done the job. The other two's death had been equally as gruesome.
None of the agents' deaths had been pretty. After all, I'd had to use my bare hands and what was immediately available to me. Perhaps violence was not the answer, but there was no way I allow any other supernatural beings to toy with me again.
My eyes darted around.
They strained in the dark as they searched for signs of danger.
The bodies were littered all over the living room.
Blood was splashed against the bullet-ridden walls and pooled up on the floor.
There was a pile of grey brain matter leaking from the table. The skull that it belonged to still hung at the edge of it.
The living room itself was a mess.
The furniture was scattered and overturned. Many valuable jewels and paintings lay on the floor broken.
Grass lay shattered all around the room.
Despite my waiting and searching, there were no others that I could currently see, but I didn't know if they had snipers. So, I kept myself as low on the ground as possible.
I could only hope that they didn't have thermal scopes.
"Fuck. Fuck."I cursed under my breath.
There was no way I could stay here. They knew where I lived, and more would be sent once these ones didn't report back.
"Goddamnit!" There was no way I could restart my life with Alice. She was at too much risk if she continued to stay with me.
I just didn't know whether or not they would go after her if they couldn't get me. They were probably here to avenge that fucker that I'd killed, and if they worked with someone like that, then Alice was in danger.
I'd been too angry that I'd ignored that he might have allies. Now they after me. I shuddered at the thought of what they would do if they captured me.
Even if they pretended to be official, I knew better. There was no way they would let me live after killing one of their own.
I crawled across broken glass and pools of blood as I made my way towards the basement hatch where my equipment was kept.

It was located in the washing room located down the hall.
Halfway there, I leaped up and sprinted the rest of the way.
I dashed from side to side. There was no way I was going to make my death easy. Luckily enough, no shots were taken. Once arrived at the hatch, I immediately opened it and jumped down.
As I entered, I slammed it shut and locked it.
Only then did I let myself breathe a sigh of relief.
They shouldn't be able to see me under here. The basement had been altered by me to protect against thermal scopes.
The basement was filled with guns and various other miscellaneous objects. At the back of it, there was a bunker door.
I was still very much exhausted, but I wasted no time and immediately got to work.
I quickly grabbed and equipped my gear.
I wanted to inform the army of what was going on, but that was not smart to do currently.
By the looks of those guys, they might have members inside the military or in the government in general.
Even if they weren't in the military, randomly call military officials with such a story would end up with me being fined and dismissed as being crazy.
Even with my rank, it would still be frowned upon.
It would also be rather hard to get the army to mobilize for a soldier who claimed that he was getting hunted by supernatural people.
No, that option was off the table for now, but perhaps some of my squadmates might be of help. I grabbed my phone before heading towards the bunker door.
As I heaved the door open, I was greeted by the sight of the escape tunnel. I wasted no time in locking the door once I entered.
I sent a message out before running down the tunnel.
Most houses in Switzerland had a bunker, but few had bunkers with escape tunnels. The exit of this particular one was another bunker 9 kilometers away that exited in the forest close by. I would have a much better chance at escaping if I went that way.
As I hurried down the tunnel, my mind whirled with various possibilities.
If these people were actually in the government, then I would have to go on the run. There was no way for me to win that fight.
They would eventually wear me down even with my advantage.
I was fucking pissed off. Things just didn't seem to want to get better. I squashed my anger and continued to run. I was a less effective soldier when I was angry.
It was only 15 minutes later that I reached the exit of the bunker.
The hatch out was old and rusted.
It took quite a bit of effort to get the creeky thing to move, but eventually, I managed to move it. Before exiting, I pulled out my pistol and got ready just in case.
As I heaved myself out of the tunnel, I was relieved to see that no enemies were shooting at me currently. There were none in sight at all.
The forest cast long shadows as the fool moon loomed overhead. The howls of the winter wind did not help to take the edge off.

I felt my phone buzz as I got a message.
I opened the phone and read the message.
It looked like my way out of here would be arriving soon. I just had to survive in this forest for 15 minutes.
I closed the hatch behind me before placing some boulders on top of it it. Glancing around, I noticed a tree that would give a perfect view of my exit strategy and of the rest of the battlefield.
Climbing up was a breeze.
It took me less than a minute to make my way to the top and find a stable enough branch to lie on.
I activated my camouflage as I pulled out Hex and got ready to pick any that came my way.
14
I lay there in silence. The wind continued to howl, and the snow picked up pace.
No enemies were currently in range.
13
The cracking of trees and the rustling of leaves kept me on edge. A bush rustled, and I immediately aimed for it only to realize it was a hedgehog trotting around. It glanced around before running away.
What is a hedgehog doing out so late in the winter?
12
Nothing was happening.
Everything continued as it was.
My phone buzzed. A quick glance told me enough. ETA 12 minutes.
11
They came within the range of scope.
They numbered 30 in total. All were heading in my direction.
Somehow they had managed to find my general location.
"Damn."
I took aim and fired.
Bang.
The shot was quiet as it blasted one of their heads off. Immediately the others took cover behind trees. They still moved up towards me.
10
I blasted the heads of 4 more off, but they continued to advance. These people really didn't give a care about their lives. As I picked off another one, my stomach dropped.
9
Quickly I hopped to the next branch.
Fwoop!
The bullet shredded through the branch that I been on.
The branch slammed down into the snow below.
I immediately climbed down and lay on the floor before picking off another.
I got up immediately after and ran to a new spot.
8
They were closer now.
I could hear their shouts over the wind. This wasn't good. I had to get rid of their sniper before they got here, or I would be in for a world of hurt.
I found a new tree with thicker branches for better coverage and quickly climbed atop it.
7
Fwoop! My blood turned cold as my ears started to ring from the sound. The bullet had missed me by only an inch. Immediately I hopped down and moved to another spot.
The men's voices grew louder.
The wind kept howling.
"Shit."
6
I weaved around trees before climbing a hill hidden behind multiple trees. My heartbeat in my chest as I once again set up.
This time there was no sound of sniper fire, but I heard the men were approaching. They were too close for my liking, but I had to deal with this sniper.
5
As I looked down the scope, I used my title and quickly calculated the angle from where I had last been shot.
Once the location was found, I aimed there only to find that the spot was empty.
They had moved after having shot.
Whoever it was definitely skilled.
I pushed my power into overdrive as I continued to calculate the most likely area where they had moved to.
4
The men were close now, only a couple hundred meters.
They had stopped shouting, but I knew they were closing in. Still, I had not found the sniper.
As I continued to look for his location, I saw a barrel.
3
Bang!
I rolled out the way as I took the shoot.
Unfortunately, my instinctual move left me tumbling down the hill and into a boulder at the bottom. My back slammed against it, and my bones seemed to vibrate from impact.
My back roared in pain, but I quickly sent some qi there before getting up and moving. I didn't know whether or not I had succeeded in killing the sniper. Laying around would be fatal for me.
The men started shouted and at each other.
"He's here!"
"Move in!"
They started to run towards me. I felt the vibration of my phone.
Eta 2
I put away my sniper on the magnets on the back of the suit before pulling out my pistol and started to run towards the exit location.
Bang! Bang!
Bullets whizzed past me as I weaved in and out of trees. My muscles roared as my qi raced through them.
I turned around and fired 8 shots.
They all hit home. The screams of the men blended in perfectly with winds screams.
"Get the medic!"
1
The rest of you don't let him escape. They continued to chase, but even as I ran in a zigzag pattern, they still started to fall behind.
Bang!
Bang!
I Kept firing back.
All the while, more of them dropped. As I ran towards the road, my heart sank at the lack of an escape vehicle.
The men were closer, and their shots were starting to hit too close for my liking.
"He's right there!"
6 more shots and 6 more bodies dropped.
I aimed at the next and shot.
Click.
I needed to reload.
Bang!
I rolled out of the way as a bullet whizzed where I had just been standing.
0
Beep! Beep!
I heard the roar of a car, and a massive black truck raced towards me.
I ran towards it.
IT skidded to a stop, and I immediately jumped in.
GO! GO! Go!
Without hesitation, the driver stepped on it and accelerated out of the area.
Bullets slammed against the truck.
"Thanks, Evan."
You should be thanking me. I snapped around to see...
"Alexis?"
"What the fuck is going on on Arny."
I'll explain when we...
Before I could explain, I blacked out as the fatigue of my power use slammed into me and took me to the realm of unconsciousness.

The journey has just begun, and the hardest step is always the first one. ~ This is my attempt at both the Xianxia/Wuxia and Portal/Isekai genre of fiction that I love, and the means to provide a story set in such guidelines, while distancing myself from some of the more common tropes. I do hope you enjoy the story I shall endeavor to tell. ~ Average post between 1000 - 3000 words. This is a work in progress, and will be edited and adjusted over time.
