Chapter 62 – Keep the change!
It did not take long for my young self to move back to original village. I remember that I had around 1200 cold coins with myself when I went back. Following him with a few days of difference I went to Myrim city. It was one of two cities that emerged close to original village.
Though it was called a city, in comparison to Mehn it was more like a ward. I knew that it was going to get larger as time will pass and my young self will begin to trade with this city. We were going to open another Temple of Dar to pubic close to Myrim so my travel to there was like killing two birds with one stone.
2500 gold coins which I got from Ricat to get the Iron Tree was handy this time. I had send a pigeon to our guardian brother in Myrim in advance for him to order cattle and sheep that would cost 2500 gold coins.
Mayor of Myrim rode with me and Krayon to Temple of Dar. Krayon was our initiate for “The Guard” from Myrim. He had been involved in building Temple of Dar back in some other province which I can not remember the name. Because of business interests he had moved to Myrim few months ago. He recruited two new members from Myrim and with financial support from different regions, in less than a month time he had managed to build Temple and bunker.
I was standing by Krayon when Mayor of Myrim entered the temple by opening its wooden doors. Candle was lighted and put in front of late King Dar’s statue. Mayor did a prayer by murmuring something and made a speech in front of people who were with us for event. Krayon went in after Mayor and people began to go inside though one-by-one to give their prayers.
In less than few hours Krayon and I were the only ones left near temple. He had refreshing smile on his face most probably because of his accomplishment.

[Krayon]: Brother Bartholomew are you going to join us in Myrim?
[Bartholomew]: No, why?
[Krayon]: Cattle and sheep that you ordered made me think so...
[Bartholomew]: No, I’m going to sell them. More like you will sell them.
[Krayon]: You are not a good merchant brother, you will lose at least few hundred golds...
[Bartholomew]: I will sell it for less than half the price I bought it for.
Patting his back using my right hand, I asked him to go back to Myrim for lunch. On the way, I explained him that a young man will come for a trade, and we will sell it for 1200 gold coins and his relatives in Mehn will reimburse for rest of money in capital city later on. Clueless as he is, he nodded listening to every word that came from my mouth.
We were referring to each other as brother or sister so that nobody could or should inferior or superior to another. “The Guard” was an organization where your background did not matter although most of us were wealthy.
In Myrim, Krayon referred me to a restaurant while he went after few business deals that he had to finish. It was a nice restaurant while most of the customers were either mercenaries or small time merchant who came with them. I sat near a table with three stools beside it. Waiter came for order and I asked him for a slice of well cooked beef with mashed potates and cup of wine.
Wine was served first, and as I was having first few sips not-so tall but a well-build man with a sword near his hip came up to me.
[-]: Old man I’m going to borrow these two stools for my friends to sit on...
He pointed towards a bunch of people who were sitting near three tables that were brought together. Bunch of drunk mercenaries. I smiled...
[Me]: My son, I need only one to sit on.
He grabbed other two stools and went away. It didn’t take long he came back with another two mercenaries. He put a stool back near my table and sat on it.

[-]: I brought one of stools back, old man.
We were sitting face to face. Few minutes ago when he had come to ask for stools, I hadn’t seen his face in details but right now I did see that they were not of a man of good standing and were looking at me with not good intentions either.
[Me]: Thank you, young man. Though I told you I need only one and I am already sitting on it.
Waiter brought two plates and put on table. One had steak, the other mashed potatoes.
[Me]: Can you please bring me salt and pepper?
Waiter nodded and went away while mercenary with sinister intentions told me.
[-]: You seem like a rich man...
[Me]: I’m well off but not rich.
[-]: Old man, we were fighting against beastmen on the north near Mount Retnus and now we were told to go to Hunter Valley to protect our lands from Elves.
[Me]: Honourable deeds, young one.
[-]: Its our duty, old man. Do you know what you duty is?
[Me]: To wait...
[-]: Wait for what?
[Me]: For reaper to knock the door with its scythe. So it shall open and I may enter the realm of eternity where pain and suffering are no more.
[-]: Fuck me! We got a philosopher in here with us. (another mercenary screamed so that the others could hear his words)
Laughs roared around as their drunk friends began to smirk and chuckle at his words. Intoxicated they were, I did not understand exactly why they laughed, unfortunately they did.
[-]: Old man did you not know that its not a good sign to talk about death in front of warriors of Kali clan who are going to war? How are you going to repay for your sins? Would you like see reaper earlier than you should?
I took out a gold coin from my purse and put it infront of the mercenary. As gold coin was put on table, waiter came near me with two small saucer filled with salt and paper on it. Mercenary sitting in front of me was looking at gold coin. In an instant other mercenary who was standing besides my table smashed both his hands on table and moved closer to me. Less than 20 centimeters away from my head he was looking at me aggresively when waiter dropped saucer down and sounds of cracking echoed.
[-]: Old man you disrespected us not once but twice. Just a gold coin? You want your sins to be washed of with just a gold coin? I’m the champion in our group. You want to buy me with a gold coin? Haaa?
[Me]: I have a better idea!
[-]: What’s that?
My right hand moved instantly. I grabbed the guy by his neck. Pushing a bit forcefully I made sure that he could not breathe. His face got red in a moment. I smashed his face to table while still keeping hold of his head. His hands were moving right and left because of panicking. Second mercenary took out a knife when...
[Me]: Calm down fellas. It’s a restaurant not a battle zone. We are here to eat not to fight. Are we?
[-]: Release him or...
[Me] or Kali clan is going to punish me? Hahaa.. Kali is a tribe, not a clan boy. I have heard of misusing name of Kali tribe quite a few times in my lifetime. Nobody was punished because of that as it is not a crime. But threatening a Kali tribe elder by a mere group of mercenaries?!
Other one was losing his breathe, I thought he is going to die. Releasing him I continued...
[Me]: Take the coin, pay for everything that you had and keep the change!

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!
