《Gratuitous Item Crafting and Descriptions (and shoddy economics)》Long-Sword of Extreme Skill and Blood-Thirsty Narcissism

Having made a bunch off money from selling that mercenary the helmet, Jimmy went shopping because he wanted to make the strongest sword he could think of. In order to get something that would make a deadly sword, he needed to spend some of his hard-earned cash on some more expensive metals and reagents. A handful of very small diamonds, a bit of silver and gold and even a tiny ruby. For some reason, there was a gigantic difference in cost between a very small gem and a small gem, so it was actually pretty efficient. Probably something to do with the mines.
Jimmy also bought another couple of steel ingots, more coal and some fresh water and a glass bowl - for some reason it was very cheap despite there being no glass mass-production. He put it down to magic of some kind. Magic was always the answer. Maybe a God of Cheap glass? anyway, he pulled his thoughts out of the clouds and focused on getting all that he needed. He absentmindedly rubbed his Ring; it always made him calmer and helped him concentrate.
Ingredients! Reagents! Jewels and gemstones and metals! He would need to wait for a few more sales before doing a proper upgrade of his tools. There was too much sheer quantity needed for this Sword he would be making. He spent the rest of the coins he had with his "dad" and then hoisted the big sack of all the goodies over his shoulder and walked back home.
This would be a big day.
Everything needed to be perfect, so he spent a good half hour tidying everything and organizing everything he would need, and spent a half-hour on designing the sword. It would be a Longsword. Nice and balanced and not too heavy. Most swords weren't very heavy anyway, and could be used quite fast.
Sharpness, durability, skill and courage. Something that shined in the sun very nicely and would be beloved for a long time. Wicked sharp and deadly. "Hmm. I guess I will focus my energies on enchanting with skill and something that might help or be a logical conclusion. What do good fighters tend to have? pride. Yes, they always think they're the best. That would help in potential future sales, perhaps."

And lo! He got to work. First up, was making the wooden handle and crafting a straightforward geometric pattern in, one that would also subtlely aide in grip. The pommel was prepared for a bit later. It would be to have a silver-steel alloy, and good for impromptu non-lethal attack at close range. the hand-guard would be made very strong because there was no point in a perfect sword that would be made useless if the wielder's hand was struck.
All the non-smithing required preparation and crafting was done first so that it was out of the way. Jimmy smiled to himself in satisfaction. Basics were important and this wasn't to be ruined by forgetting them.
He brought the bellows online, feeding in the coals and getting it to the perfect temperature for the initial shaping of the specific ingots and ore for the back-bone of the sword - the inflexible part that needed to not waver. Heating, cooling, reheating and folding took an hour. During this, he also carefully figured out the pieces that would be used for the double-edged blades, as it required a different set of qualities.
Singing a song of bravery and skill and slap-dash slaughter, he carefully added in the fragments of silver where they were needed to get the perfect alloy. Skill, Skill, Skill. Hand by hand-length the blade was pieced together and forged and adjusted. Cooled at the perfect amount, heated a little at the right amount to blend the traits that would make the ideal sword. Every so often Jimmy grimmaced at a near mistake. Any mess-up could potentially introduce a flaw that could render the sword ridiculously fragile. A blade needed to be perfect all the way through as if there was a brittleness in the wrong place, the whole thing could snap in half or shatter.
At last the longsword was forged into being. The slender blade tapered nicely at the tip, with a slight and barely noticeable fluctuation of the edges that meant that it couldn't be safely grabbed by the opposition. The various alloys were perfectly combined and placed that the blade was a whole piece without weakness. Filled with focus and willpower and song, Jimmy had awed himself and he was the person who had crafted this master-piece.

Now that the blade had been done, and the handle and guard was mostly complete, he just needed to marry the two in perfect harmony. He forged carefully the wood and the metal and had exquisitely hidded nails and interlocking mechanisms that he then smelted into one that no one would realize how he had done it. Then, he began with the addition of the gemstones.
The woodwork had been carefully made that he could slot in the tiny diamonds and other gemstones, and he slotted them in, pouring energy and focus and will, and cunning. Gem by gem, the geometry was enhanced dramatically. By the end of it, when he held the completed Long-Sword of Extreme Skill and Blood-Thirsty Narcissism in his hand to test it out, he was filled with pride and the sheer power of his enchantments.
He twirled it around in a complicated figure of eight pattern. Darted to and fro around the area he slaughtered imaginary foes and cried out with glee. His "dad" came out and congratulated him whilst keeping far back, as he understood by now the potency and danger of his "son's" craftmanship. This sword shined in the slowly cooling glow of the forge. The gems in their perfect geometric positions magnified the ease of grip, and the hand-guard was absolutely perfect for the majority of combat situations, with the silver-steel pommel ideal for close and personal knock-outs and stuns if someone managed to get through the blade's optimal range.
Jimmy and "father" decided to wait for an extremely wealthy buyer to sell to, as this sword would make and break kingdoms.
A week later, the recent Dragon Slayer, who had bought the Helmet of Ice and Excessive Greed rolled up into town on an expensive horse and a sack of gemstones and gold coins, demanding the mightiest weapon or other item that Jimmy could provide. Quickly organizing a trade, Jimmy sold the Longsword to the Dragon-Slayer for the bag of coins - that was how amazing the sword was that the extremely greedy customer still bought it for a significant amount of his new hoard - and the buyer was very happy.
Dragon-Slayer returned home; pocket much lighter, with two very good Jimmy creations. He laughed uproariously with his extreme power that he now had. A dragon-hoard, a mighty weapon, and a very good defensive item. With these three things, he would dominate anyone he wanted to. It only took him a few weeks for him to get it into his head to expand his hoard via force. He would become a threat to the local fief below the tall hill filled with dragon-gold for quite some time.
The fact that Jimmy had basically hand-crafted a local tyrant into being extremely powerful didn't particularly concern him. He knew that he had a certain customer for when he wanted to really go all out in skill and display of crafting. He didn't want to always make the best thing possible, however and just wanted to make a bunch of random items and to improve his craft-manship for now. Despite requests for weapons and armour he declared to anyone who came to commission off him that for the next week or two, he would be doing trinkets.
Dragon-Slayer was attacked by Frost Dragon, and whilst he was wounded, at the very least his Ice helmet rendered him immune to the Dragon, so the two balanced each other out rather. What didn't balance things out, was the Longsword, so after a big fight, the Dragon-Slayer killed his second Dragon. Brutally eviscerating his foe and managing to add to his hoard and legend further. There had been a large bounty on the Frost Dragon's head, so Dragon-Slayer got the bounty money and reputation, and many women were interesting in bedding him.
This status quo of threats trying to kill the Dragon-Slayer and the Dragon-Slayer killing them and making a lot of money off of it continued for quite some time, and this suited everyone quite nicely as no one really wanted to deal with such a threat so, the threats sort of neutralizing each other was quite nice.
Jimmy and co were very rich from this, and would upgrade their tools and buy more reagents and make a bit more other funny things. They didn't really pay attention to the news, but just drank beer and wine and partied before cracking on and doing what they did best.
