《Happy Ending》Chapter 45: A surprise at the very end

It was a boy wearing easy-to-move clothes, another student from the school. He had a bit of tan on his skin, with a carefree aura around him that made him being more approachable; still, he had a good physique on his body.
-Hello there, I don’t believe we were introduced yet. – Extending his hand, the boy continued - I’m Kyle, nice to meet you!
His hand and friendly attitude weren’t going towards Chris. Instead, the boy, Kyle, had all of his focus on the girl. But, in contrast to his merry approach, the girl wasn’t saying anything and just stared at him with an emotionless face.
-Not much your thing huh…
From her reaction, Kyle was disheartened as he retrieves his hand but it sounded so unnatural that anyone could tell it was a lie.
-You know, I heard you were from overseas.
Without losing a single breath, he swiftly changed topics.
-That is so cool! Which parts were you?
He waited a bit for the girl to say something but she remained silent.
-Wait! Wait! Let me guess! You are from…Russia!
He lively talked with her but the girl just looked at him.
-What, was I wrong? Dang it, I swear it was because of your gorgeous hair…but, now that I see better, your face looks European. If I were to say it, then…German! No, they can’t match your beauty. How about…French! Who am I kidding? If you were from French, you would be a model no doubt.
After each word he said, the more transparent his motives were, and the more irritated the girl became.
-Surprised, huh? Yeah, I know a thing or two from my travels there, but I had never seen someone like you before. Tell me, which oyster was responsible for such a fine pearl?
-…Leave.
Not wanting to hold herself anymore, the girl bluntly told Kyle with a single word out of her mouth. But contrary to her expectations, that only made him happy.
-C’mon, don’t be this cold. I’m just trying to know you better since we are from the same school and all.
With that exchange, it was clear that he wasn’t going to leave any time soon. Now, Chris was starting to get worried. He had an idea this would happen someday when the girl started to be around other people, but what Kyle was doing might be too much for her to handle.
Looking at Kyle’s smile, the girl sighed and recovered herself.
-Sorry to inform, but right now I’m busy with someone else, so if you gave us some space, I would appreciate it. Thanks!
Changing the way she was looking towards him, the girl expressed her thoughts while imitating his attitude. It was only then that Kyle turned around to notice that Chris was also on the table.
-Oh, I see. Sorry to interrupt!
He then proceeds to pick up his tray and get up from the table, leaving them alone once again. Seeing Kyle leaving made Chris relieved.
(Thank God nothing bad happened…)
And, when his guard was down, an arm went over Chris’ shoulder, making him surprised.
-But hey, isn’t more the merrier? After all, we can all have a good time together!
Taking the seat right at Chris’ side, Kyle sat down again. Chris couldn’t believe what was happening as he looked at the other boy with surprise.
(You idiot! Why did you come back?!)
Everything was solved but that guy didn’t get the message. All you had to do was look at the girl’s reaction to know she wasn’t interested in him.
-Say…are you really not going away?

The girl talked in a monotone that didn’t match her contented face. While Kyle was confident after seeing her expression, Chris was paying attention in another part of her body, more precisely her right hand that was passing her index finger on top of the tableware knife’s blade.
-Why would I go away when I’m with friends?
Hearing his words, the girl had an astonished look on her face, stopping all of her actions.
-…Friends?
As if her reaction was pleasant for him, Kyle made a huge smile.
-Yeah! There is nothing better than being with friends, right?
He kept emphasizing the word “friends” to make sure everyone heard it right, and, from the girl’s puzzled expression, it worked.
-Hmm…
And then, he heard something coming from his side.
-I had never met you, dude.
It was Chris voice sounding a bit unease, so Kyle soon lost interest and returned to see the girl, but was taken back after seen her returning to the initial stage of when he started talking.
-Chris, is he not your friend?
As if she wanted to assure how the things really were, the girl asked in a commanding tone that even Kyle was surprised.
-Like I said, we had nev-
-Chris! Buddy, how didn’t you talk about me to her man?
With a loud voice, Kyle stopped Chris’ words before that could be completed, bringing the boy closer to him with his arm around Chris’ neck.
-Man, I thought you already talked about us before. Do you have any idea how embarrassing it would have been if I had talked all that without my friend to cover up? I would never even try it!
Even if they were close, Kyle also made sure it was loud enough for the girl also to hear it, although she wasn’t paying attention to anything he was saying and was looking only at Chris.
-What are you-
Not wanting to be closer to him, Chris tried to push away Kyle’s arm, but the so-called “friend” put more strength on his grip, tighten Chris’ throat that made him stop talking.
-But don’t worry man, I forgive you. After all, this is a good chance to do it…right?
In a position that made the girl not seen his face, Kyle was looking down at Chris while making sure he couldn’t get away from him. The smile on his face was full of malice, implying for the boy to do what he says.
(…So that is what is going now…)
There were rumors about those types of people in schools, but Chris had never encountered one of them until now that is. He didn’t know a way to deal with Kyle at that moment, so he was lost to what to do.
-…Is something wrong?
They were in that stage for some time that the girl grew suspicions about what was happening.
-Ops, my bad!
With that, Kyle put his arm away, freeing Chris from his lock, and returned to sit normally.
-I was too excited about my friend Chris here that I even forgot about you. Could you forgive me?
With his carefree-self back, Kyle put hands together to ask the girl in a clumsy way but she just ignored him and looked at Chris, who was trying to catch his breath.
-Chris...is he your friend…or not?
But the boy didn’t have a moment to rest his mind, as she pressured him to get an answer.
-Yeah man, stop with the drama and get on with it.
On the other hand, that guy was also appearing to lose patience.
(Dammit! There isn’t a correct choice!)

Either he lies so the guy will pester the girl for God knows how long with the disguise of a “friend” or he tells the truth so the girl will do something unthinkable again, making her look weird in front of other students.
If only he had time, Chris maybe could have thought of some other way to solve this, but all of his options were bounded by those two choices. No matter the one he goes with, there will be always a drawback.
-It’s ok.
But as he was losing his head, Chris heard her voice calling him. Looking at her, the boy was stunned to find the girl looking at him with sympathy. After staring at her eyes, he didn’t need to be confused anymore.
-Hey Kyle…
Turning his sight to the guy at his side, Chris said to the smug face of him.
-Like I was saying, we had never met before, so there is no way of us being friends.
Ending his phrase with assurance, Chris saw as Kyle frown his eyebrows to look at him with a cold stare but Chris wasn’t retreating by that.
(Sorry, but things aren’t going your way today, mister pretty face.)
He was confident this was the best choice. He didn’t know who this guy was, so there was no way of predicting what he would do to them. Well, not that he needs to be worried about her tho since Chris was sure the girl would put that guy on the floor before he could do anything towards her.
Besides, that wasn’t the only reason for his lack of doubts.
-I see.
Happy that she could understand the situation at the table, the girl slowly turned her sight from the boy to Kyle, facing him with a peaceful expression on her face, with Chris watching all of his actions imagining a grin in his mind.
And then she picked the knife.
(…Huh!?)
He saw it clearly. Her hand was gripping the knife so hard that he could hear the bones clacking, which was the exact opposite of what he imagined.
He thought her look at that time was to tell him that she wouldn’t do anything weird to the guy, so there wouldn’t be anything to worry about, but his hopes were too good to be the truth!
-Wait-
As he was about to say something, the girl already moved her right arm in a fast motion and, with the knife on her hands, she use it to-
Point at Kyle.
-You…are the most annoying person I had ever met in my entire life.
Without a doubt in her words, the girl declared so that, not only for the table to hear it but the whole canteen, with all the students speechless from the shock of her actions.
-First, you come here, acting all nice, thinking you can win me over with a few sweet words like I’m your everyday girl, but even with me giving all the hints that an idiot could solve, you still continued to talk like it was working.
Without caring about the weird looks at her, the girl continued.
-Seriously, what is wrong with you? Intruding on others persons business like you are important. In case you can’t see it, let me make it clear to you: you are boring.
Some people were thinking this should stop before it goes out of hand but nobody dared to interfere.
-And are you deaf as well? Because I’m pretty sure I told you to leave many times already but you kept insisting about staying in, disregarding my entire goodwill just to try something everyone knows is pointless. Here, as my last attempt to help you understand, I will spell it out for you.
Taking a break of her offensive, the girl cleared her throat and said:
-I. Am. Not. Interested. In. You. Now, get out of my sight.
Finishing her business, the girl proceeded to continue her meal in peace, ignorant of what she had just done. No one in the canteen could believe in what they had just seen. They were all bewildered with their eyes wide open. But the ones who were surprised the most were the other two at their table.
Chris was stunned with his whole face pale as the rest of his body was losing color. He would never take that option if he knew it would end up like this, but the girl’s eyes at that time tricked him.
And if we talk about the one who took all of her attacks, it was even worse. His face was crumbling so hard that it made the confidant he had earlier looked like a lie, with the body trembling from the shock.
But Kyle used his remaining strength to recover himself, even if it was just for a while.
-I see, well, it was a shame we couldn’t do anything today.
Picking up his food tray, he left the table.
-Let’s talk another time, ok? Bye-bye!
Trying to sound normal, Kyle walked out of the canteen while being watched by all the others students, while also trying his best to not show how badly his legs were quivering.
Nobody dared to speak or do any sound. The atmosphere in the canteen was that delicate. Everyone was afraid of what would happen, except for a single person that caused all of this.
-Aren’t you gonna eat?
(How can you be this calm!?)
It was the second time she had done something like this. Even though she was so normal until now, the girl just ruined her social standing in front of the whole school. When they reach home, Chris will make sure this will not happen for the third time.
And then, a laugh could be heard.
-Serves him right!
-He broke up with a friend of mine and I was wondering how to get back at him!
-Man, that was fun!
-Did you saw his face? He was like “AHHHHHH!” all over it!
-Seriously, she did not just do that!
One by one, the students started to talk among themselves, with all of their remarks being positive. From what Chris heard from here and there, Kyle wasn’t liked very much from within the rest of the school, at least based on the canteen opinion.
(Well…I guess some wrongdoings do become good after all.)
Seeing that many of them were respecting the girl’s actions put Chris at ease. At least, she will not be suffering from reclusion as well.
But the time of joy needed to end, as the school bells announced the lunch break was over, making the student get up from their tables to the exit, where they will go to each of their classrooms.
Just like them, Chris also got up from his seat but was stopped by the girl’s hand holding him down.
-We didn’t finish our talk.
-Oh, that is right.
He was so taken back that he completely forgot about it. She wanted to say something to him before Kyle showed up.
-Well, we can talk later, so let’s-
-No, we can’t!
With a shout, the girl strongly denied him. Luckily, all of the students got out of the canteen, so nobody else heard her but Chris wasn't feeling good about it.
-…Why are you saying that?
-You don’t understand…you just…don’t understand…
(What is…this?)
This was weird. The girl wasn’t like her usual self. The hand that was holding Chris was shaking, just like the rest of her whole body, but only when she looked at his eyes was the time he was certain about his premonition: inside of those dual-colored eyes, there was a tinge of fear.
-Chris…I saw something lurking in the walls after the class started!
