《Happy Ending》Chapter 36: Welcome the new student

It was a commotion inside the classroom.

The students, mostly the boys, were excited and surprised with the new student. Her face alone won the hearts of many and the clear voice she had echoed through their minds like a siren’s song.

Some couldn’t understand how a person like her could exist. A red eye on her left and a blue eye on her right, a skin so white that made the light reflect like an aura surrounding her, even more with her platinum hair so bright it could blind you if you state long enough.

If someone said this girl was an actress or a princess from some country, everyone would believe.

-Ok, ok, everyone, give it a rest. – Said the teacher. – Don’t make it harder for the new student.

With his words, the students started to calm down, although there were still whispers here and there in the classroom. It wouldn’t be better than this, the teacher thought.

But amidst the noisy classmates, there was one who kept silent and just smiled as he fixed his eyes on the girl, although it was just a facade. In his mind, however, he was thinking:

(The heck is she doing here?!)

It was a shocker for Chris. She was there, really there, with the school uniform and a schoolbag on her back. Inside his school, inside his class, outside his house and in the middle of twenty-so people. Too many circumstances passed in Chris’ mind and all of them warned him about the danger of this situation.

-Well then, Mrs. Midna, just pick any seat you want and welcome to the class.

And he didn’t have time to think about it. To not waste more time of the lesson, the teacher told the girl and returned himself to the blackboard to write new contents while she searched for an empty seat.

In this school, the seats are two students sharing the same table. Each table is separated and placed so that each row had three tables on them, from the window to the wall forming three columns dividing the left, middle and right of the class with a total of five rows of seats, allowing the class to hold up to thirty students inside.

There were twenty-three students in this class, with the girl being the twenty-four. Although all the tables had at least one student, there were empty chairs for her to choose whose table she wants to share.

And within those tables with just one student without a pair, there was the middle one in the fourth row where Chris was sitting.

A table only for him, allowing him to choose what to and not put on it without caring about his seat partner. Now, the empty seat that he always placed his bag on was nothing more than another place for the girl to choose.

It didn’t take her long to figure out where he was sitting. It was but a moment for the girl to glance at him before walking between the tables. Chris didn’t stop looking at her with a glint of worry in his eyes, but as everyone was paying attention to the girl, nobody noticed his expression.

And then to his surprise…

-Excuse, is that seat available?

In the left table of the second row, the girl stopped and pointed to the empty seat near the window as she asked the female student who occupied the table.

-Ah… No, no! It’s all yours if you want. – Quickly taking her bag from the seat and placing on the ground, the female student replied.

-Thank you. – Going behind the student, the girl took her seat. – I’m Midna, it's pleasure to meet you.

-I’m Sarah, likewise!

After the greetings, the girl took out a notebook and faced the blackboard as the teacher finished writing on it and resumed the lesson. But Chris couldn’t focus on him.

His sight was still fixed on the girl. She saw him, he knows that, and yet she chose another chair to sit. Why would she do that, he tried to answer this question but remembering how she acted, he couldn’t understand it either.

Still, it wasn’t a bad result for him. Maybe she thought about his feelings and didn’t want to bother him in the school or just wanted to see more of the real world by sitting near a window, but for now, Chris didn’t need to be worried about her sitting next to him.

Even then, he couldn’t low his guard either.

The boy looked around the classroom. Many students still were excited and the whispering filled the ears like a noisy mosquito at night. They were curious about her. Obviously, there wouldn’t be much movement while the lesson still continued, but in the small break between them…

Curiosity killed the cat. That phrase never seemed more real to Chris than what would come.
