《Happy Ending》Chapter 28: You are going to be a...

When the kitchen door closed, Chris made a deep sigh to calm himself. They were accepting the fact she was his cousin in some way but that was before she asked what a cousin is and ruined all of his plans.

(Honestly, isn't there any break for me...)

If the cousin story happened, things would be easy to handle. He could just pass by saying she was a girl coming over to pass some days with her family and that was it. It would be a normal situation that happened inside families and it would end like that.

-Hey, Chris, are you feeling ok?

Seen him less energetic made the girl worry if something happened. With her worrying about him, the boy couldn't stop making a wary smile. It wasn't her fault, he knew what, but still, if he didn't find some story to cover her up now, who knows what would happen in the future.

She wasn't a normal person. Hadn't he saw with his own eyes, even Chris would doubt if the girl was real. The power to pierce concrete walls using only a scythe, that speed to be always one step ahead of him, the endurance to not be hurt from bruises or even get bruises at all.

The girl was really like a video-game character, one that didn't have any sort of background or story to explore in the game. She just existed to be a villain until the moment she died. That was all that she was and always will be.

-...I'm fine, don't worry.

Or it was that what Chris thought before meeting with the real her.

For the first time in his life, the boy was interested in knowing about a particular character. She was a mystery no one knew, or even if they did, nobody would know now, except for him.

And now that she was in the real world, and now would be living with him for the time being, the boy would try his best to support the girl by teaching her how to live like a normal person.

That was one reason why he needed to make sure she had some background before interacting with others.

His girlfriend? It would work but only to a short extense. There would be questions about where they had met or where she was studying, not to mention he would need to fake being her boyfriend too. And what if they had a fight and people thought they broke up? Or if they were needed to show an act of affections just to prove they were really dating?

No, that would be too complicated and, honestly, a bit embarrassing for the boy. That's why he needed her to be from his family. When did she come? She was already in my house when I came back one day. Where did she live before coming here? Overseas with an uncle of mine. It was too easy to handle if she is from the family. There are many types of family out there. As long it wasn't something too crazy, other people would buy anything about the girl.

And now, with a relaxed mind, the boy could think straight. One problem at a time, he would take this slow and steady now.

-For now, let's discuss what we should do.

Altho it was sooner than what he anticipated, now was the time for her to have her own alias to talk with other people.

-The situation is like this: you are my cousin coming from overseas and doesn't understand very well english.

With that excuse, his friends would go back thinking to the cousin idea thinking it was just her misunderstanding that time.

-You are spending some time here to know how it's to live in another country, as you don't know much about it and is learning day by day.

If anything else she would do or say be weird for them, that should cover it to some extent.

-As for what your parents do, just say it's some office work you don't have many details about.

Doing so would pass the image she was a suburb girl from a middle-class family, so people would already expect some things from her.

-For what you like to do with your free time, just make something up, but take in mind your background.

Everybody has their own hobbies to spend time, so there wouldn't any suspicion in anything she said that sounded normal.

(And that should settle it.)

It was a good story to tell his friends. They would need to developt more about it later, but for now, Chris was certain it would work.

-So, before we start, any questions?

After all of his thinking, there wasn't any space left for mistakes. He needed to make sure the girl also understood that and was waiting for her response with a victorious smile.

And her answer was...

-What is a cousin?

Was what she said while tilting her head to the side in confusion. Contrary to the desperate boy who wanted to make up a story for her, the person in question wasn't bother at all by it and just asked the same thing again for him.

He sighs once again.

-...Do you understand what is going on here? - He said in a tired tone.

-Is something to matter? - She curiously asked.

-You know there are other people in the living room, right?

-...Oh, I understand.

So that was why he was so desperate, she thought. The girl didn't even notice them. In fact, she was so fixed on Chris' opinion about her clothes that nothing else mattered at that point. But to ignore such a thing happening right in front of her eyes was the biggest miscalculation she ever did, making her be ashamed of herself.

-I'm sorry for not noticing before.

She bowed her head in frustration. With her like this, there wasn't much the boy could say to scold her.

-No, it's alright. They somehow bought the cousin idea. Now, we need to focus. Like I was saying, we need you to-

-Please, wait a bit here.

Interrupting the boy, the girl walked to the sink dresser. Opening the drawers, she was in look for something as he watched her in confusion.

-...What are you doing?

-Here! This will do the trick!

Chris watched in shock as the girl happily took out a butcher knife with her hands. Evaluating the sharp object, she found it to be the perfect item for her plans. After swinging it around for a bit, the girl got the hand of how the knife worked and came back to the boy.

-This will only take a second, so wait a bit, ok?

She ignored the two persons in the house and allowed Chris to be saddened by them. If they were bothering him, then all she needed to do was to get rid of them just like the others would and then the two of them could return to their happy life together once again.

But when she was about to open the door...

-Just what in the hell are you doing?!

Quickly taking the knife from her hands, the boy shouted in rage as he throws it away.

-Chris, why you did that?

Not understanding the boy's reactions, the girl became confused. But now there were no more excuses for her. He knew that she wasn't familiar with anything of the real world, but everything had their limits.

If she went there with a knife in her hands...the dread Chris felt just by thinking of the result.

-...I don't know what you were thinking, but you can't just go and murder people like that.

He knew very well this wasn't a game. There is no second life or a restart button here. Once you are dead, Game Over.

-I was just going to kill them, that is all.

But for her there was nothing wrong with it, making a face that didn't find anything weird even admitting what she would do.

...

...This was a shock to the boy. After hearing her side of the story, he had some doubts about the girl and how she would interact with others, and he was preparing himself for when those questions would be answered, but hear it directly from her was another story.

Still...

-No, you will not. - He said in a firm tone.

Chris wouldn't give up on her.

-Pumpkin, from now on, killing is off limits. Banned. Prohibited.

He had seen a side of her that wasn't what she was meant to be. The villain everyone thought it was just a personification of evil and created to be hated was only a person wearing a costume that they were never allowed to take out.

All she needed was some help to find out where the zipper was.

-I...don't understand...what you said...

She heard him saying that killing was not allowed, but then how could she help Chris? It didn't make any sense for her.

A predictable reaction, the boy thought. All of her life, her own being, was made to kill. That was how she was written in the game, but this wasn't a game anymore.

And he would make sure she notices it.

-What. I. Am. Saying. Is!

With a grin on his face, Chris looked at the girl, staring right into her eyes as he said the thing that would make her mind messier than what it already was.

-Pumpkin, from now on, you are going to be a person!
