《ARC》Book 1 Chapter 61 A Series Of Unfortunate Events

The dandy held the bottle to his lips as he planted a heavy kiss on the label passionately as if it was his lover.
"What's your name?" Noah asked.
"You can call me Avery. You've met my uncle," Avery replied as he gleefully raised the wine to his parched lips, taking a large gulp.
"Who's your uncle?" Noah asked in surprise.
"Pffft! Uck! That's not wine!" Avery exclaimed in disgust as he took a running start towards the railing as he hurled the offending bottle as far out into the ocean as he could, completely ruining his refined appearance.
"Stuart, miserable old alcoholic bastard. One of the cruise ship's ability users. Pfft! I can't get the taste out," Avery spat as he tried to wipe the taste off his tongue with a handkerchief that he had pulled from inside his coat pocket.
"He's your uncle?" Noah asked.
"Unfortunately, too bad the tyrant didn't get rid of him along with you when he tossed you overboard and necked John. You probably wouldn't be able to recognize him now that he's sober. Come to mention it. He probably wouldn't be able to recognize you either."
"He didn't toss me overboard."
"No, I heard that you got lucky as your handcuffs rusted into dust."
Roger seemed content to let Noah do the talking as he stroked his pet mouse, Basil, listening with interest as he kept his thoughts to himself.
"I should have killed him when he had the chance. I won't make that mistake ever again," Noah spoke through clenched teeth as his hands clenched into fists.
"I think it's too late now. Ronan's only become more powerful. After that demon bit his ankle, he's become a man possessed, the whites of his eyes turned black, and he sometimes mumbles to himself. If that were all, we would have waited until he topped himself, then returned to normal. But, he's now advanced to grade three and is now bigger than that giant he turned into a statue."
"Wait, he killed Alex? What about Mister Kim, Su, Josh, and the others?" Noah interrupted Avery as he grabbed him frantically by the shoulders before searching his face with his eyes.
Avery pried Noah's filthy fingers from his immaculate winter coat using his handkerchief before shaking it off in the air with a dramatic flourish.

"I don't know who those people are. The tyrant got your armour, and that sword from the ocean then just started massacring people. Screaming about how blanks are filth, etc. I just avoided him then waited until he tired himself out from his little tantrum."
Avery began to rummage through the bottles that had begun to spill out of the hole in the capsule while holding each bottle he found with remnant wine to his lips as he tapped the bottom, ruining his refined illusion. Roger bent to curiously pick up a bottle that had rolled to a stop at his feet. The bottle appeared unopened as he examined it with an appraising look before placing his pet mouse Basil onto his shoulder as he pried open the cork.
"Hey! You found some!" Avery rushed to Roger's side while holding his empty glass to be filled.
"I will keep this." Roger pulled the bottle out of reach as Avery was unable to remove his gaze.
"Yes, of course," Avery replied as he gulped before wetting his lips with his tongue.
"The old Asian man, the little girl with him, the man shrouded in clothing as well as the other survivors from the ferry," Noah prompted him.
"Oh yes, them. Perhaps I could remember a little more if I had a drink in my hand" The drunk attempted to bargain.
"I can't help you with that. But please tell me what happened."
"Oh, alright. I didn't see what happened to the giant. I've already told you a summary of what I heard happened to him. After he tried to wrestle with that psychopath, as they were locked in a stalemate, his arms started to turn to stone. He started panicking when he couldn't struggle free of the deadlock and headbutt the tyrant in the face, breaking his nose. It has never been the same since. A mighty shame he had to become an ornament for his throne room." Avery relented then began to sum up what had happened since Noah fell overboard.
"What happened after that?" Noah asked anxiously.
"Shhh! I'm getting to that. First, we'll start with the little girl. She was the most impressive, after all. I was inside, minding my own business when the wall collapsed as the little girl began to scream. I'm not sure what caused her to awaken, but she was the first to react after the giant was turned to stone. The scream began as normal until suddenly the furniture in the lobby began rattling. I was there drinking with the most invigorating beauty Danielle. It's a pity that the colossal crustacean took her as it snatched the fish piercing poor Rupert and Cynthea to the lifeboat." Avery sighed as he poured himself a generous amount of wine into his empty cup.

Somehow without anyone noticing, Avery had claimed possession of the wine bottle Roger held as he wandered around the deck, regaling his tale. Roger wasn't happy as he realized that the bottle was gone. Roger walked over to Avery, snatching the bottle back with a silent glare before returning to the boss's side. Avery didn't take offence as he sipped from the glass.
"Ahem. Where was I? Yes. There were three walls between them and the lobby. We were innocently kissing on the staircase while I slipped a hand up Danielle's shirt, an absolutely exquisite figure hiding under her dress. She started to unbutton my trousers…" Avery began to go into detail about his exploits before being interrupted.
"What do you mean the little girl was the most impressive? Do you mean Su?" Noah returned him to the topic at hand before he got too sidetracked.
"Oh, yes. Excuse me. The little Asian girl destroyed three walls as she catapulted the tyrant sliding across the lobby floor. She came marching in wearing that oversized coat of hers. Vulgar thing, that. I would never allow a child to go out in public dressed like that." Avery got distracted again as he brushed an imaginary speck of dust off his impeccable shirt.
"The girl." Noah once again reminded him.
"Blue light started to gather at her throat as she sucked in a deep breath. The tyrant knew what was about to happen because he lunged to the side as she screamed again. Another set of walls was demolished as she utterly ruined the atmosphere between Danielle and me. I suggested to Danielle that we move to another room, but she had gone rigid as she pushed me away. I lost my fervour after that. I decided to lean on the stair rail to enjoy the show as I retrieved my wine glass to refill when I discovered that it was miraculously intact." Avery seemed to go off-topic again, but before Noah could prompt him, he resumed speaking.
"The ice devil… You would know him as Craig, the one who tried to rape Mistress Deville, the exotic stage dancer. Anyway, that's not important. The ice devil hit the little girl with the back of his ice spear ability that no one had seen him use since he stabbed one of his crewmates and awakened his second ability. He can now combine them to stand back and throw harpoons. Ice bullet or something or other, never seen him use it." Avery noticed Noah becoming agitated as he began to ramble again.
"Right, back to the little girl," Avery said.
"After the ice devil knocked the little girl out cold, the tyrant came out from where he was hiding behind the stairs. That's when the old Asian man showed up. If someone didn't tell me afterwards, I would not have recognized him, and I'm good with faces. It's the first time I've seen anyone get younger. Anyway. As the man arrived, he was in a mess like he had crawled through barbed wire as his upper body was exposed. He looked strong for an older man. His clothing was in rags hanging off him. His chest also had a huge number of bleeding cuts. I would assume to have originated from tangling with the seductress because she never appeared." Avery paused as he took a sip from his wine with a look of ecstasy as he slapped his lips in delight.
"Well, after the old man saw the little Asian girl slumped to the floor with the ice devil standing over. He assumed the worst. I would too. The man's an absolute pervert. The old man's hand started glowing green as a whip made of fire manifested. The ice devil and the tyrant saw no one following the old man, so teamed up to fight him. It was a glorious spectacle to behold. The old man has clearly practised martial arts in his life as he danced between the two, deflecting their abilities as he didn't stop moving for a second," A dramatic look of sadness appeared on Avery's face as he offered a toast with his remaining wine, downing it in one gulp.

Apollyon's Curse
Within the pages of folklore and fantasy, tales of people who chase after the dream of eternity, of living forever, rarely find a happy ending. They are either struck by the grim truth of reality, give up, and return to mortality or face a ghastly realization of their wishes. The latter often the worse fate, as they come to realize, only far too late, that what they sacrificed was worth far more than the time they gained. Ultimately, the common thread in these stories is that “immortality is as much a curse as it is a blessing”. People either realize it early and give up or are doomed to inevitably face its consequences. In the world Enrich lives in, that saying does hold merit. Every pathway towards eternal life has shackles of its own. They bring those high above down to the ground, evening the playing field. It is thanks to these fundamental laws that ambitious mortals are able to defy the heavens and achieve immortality themselves. The variety of methods result in each of these bindings varying in intensity and degree of freedom. Enrich’s path doesn't break this trend. Though, after what he did to himself, most wouldn’t even consider him a living thing anymore. On the day of his ascension, a world’s worth of souls were melted and recast. On that day, the human’s path had reached its conclusion, recast into Apollyon. An artifact, a weapon, is eternal, after all. As for the curse? The payment will be made, as it must. So why not offload the curse to someone else? Mortals throw their lives away for all manner of petty reasons, noble or otherwise, especially in desperation. Eventually, someone will be willing to foot the bill. Most will if given the chance. The bait is far too tempting, after all. Power, status, knowledge. All at their fingertips. If only they say “yes”. And Apollyon is very willing to help any lost souls. If they give up everything in return, of course.
