《ARC》Book 1 Chapter 60 Fine Like Red Wine

The men moved out of the way to clear a landing space on the deck as blue-lifeforce gathered beneath Roger's skin as he activated his [Air Manipulation] ability. The young dandy's eyebrow rose slightly in interest before taking another sip from his glass. His heavily damaged lifeboat began to levitate above the ocean independently as it was carefully transported over the railing of the partially flooded fishing trawler.

The almost destroyed yellow lifeboat landed heavily onto the deck with a slight shockwave felt through the deck from the impact causing waves to form outside the fishing vessel as it tilted under the added weight along with a resounding thud as the partially collapsed wall of the capsule crumbled.

Noah noticed something at the edge of his peripheral vision, but when he turned his head to look, there was nothing unusual that may have drawn his notice. Noah returned his attention to the wrecked capsule taking up the remaining space of the deck. There was a brief flash of Amber light at the edge of his vision. Noah believed he saw a butterfly formed of light disappear inside the wine resting in the young dandy's glass. A glow spread through the wine before fading back to normal. No one except Noah seemed to be aware of the strange phenomenon. The well-dressed young man used his opulent lion head cane to lever himself to his feet.

"Good evening, gentlemen," the dandy spoke.

The dandy thrust his expensive cane up before catching it in the middle and tucking it under his arm while merrily greeting the silent unkempt crew of the fishing boat gathered to watch his entrance.

The young playboy's flawless face could be seen as he paused briefly to pick up an opened bottle of wine from the wreckage of his lifeboat. He was careful not to spill any of the remaining contents from his glass while tentatively navigating the rubble of the capsule's wall with the exaggerated swagger of a drunkard.

"It's morning," Louis corrected the dandy.

"It is? Well, one tends to lose track of time in good company!" The young man flashed a foolish grin at the men staring at him while raising his glass in a toast before gulping down the remainder.

A strange expression appeared on the playboy's face as he seemed to be hit by recognition as his eyes landed on Noah hidden among the crowd, it was unknown what he may be thinking as his smile froze in place.

"You're that unfortunate fellow from the Poseidon. Hmm… Noah, that's your name?" the dandy said, causing Noah's mouth to fall agape in shock.

"You know this man?" Roger asked the dandy as he stepped forward from the group of filthy men, casting a glance at Noah.

"Not personally, but he was the gossip aboard the Poseidon for weeks after he and his companion jumped into the shark tank for no logical reason. I would have left them all to drown had it been me. Their screaming caused me to spill my drink, which was an especially rare vintage, very expensive," the dandy continued as he refilled his wine glass.

"What are you talking about?" Louis cut in from the crowd causing the dandy to sigh at the interruption.

"Their boat was sinking while some particularly nasty sharks circled, instead of doing the logical thing and saving themselves. He and some giant mute jumped into the water and mindlessly decided it was a good idea to PUSH half a boat that anyone could see was doomed. Not only did they actually manage to move the sunken boat, they somehow did it while fighting off overgrown sharks and a bloody Kraken," the dandy incredulously recalled how Noah and Alex saved the ferry survivors, shaking his head before once again downing his drink.

"How is that possible?" Louis continued to question the man.

"Ask him, but from what I understand, he's not your usual ability-user," the dandy responded while trying to shake the last drop of wine from the bottle onto his tongue.

Murmurs passed through the crowd as oarsmen distanced themselves from Noah. The crew discussed Noah's odd behaviour, beginning on his first day on board when he attempted to rescue Louis unsuccessfully.

"Why are you here and not back on the cruise ship?" Noah ignored the glances and murmurs as he stepped forward to ask the half-drunk man.

"The tyrant's gone mad. A man can't even drink in peace after claiming everything for himself to reward for good behaviour. Only ability-users are allowed alcohol, while ordinary folk are forced to brew their own. I'm not quite desperate enough to resort to that swill. I think someone got the recipe from when they were in prison," the dandy let out a shiver as he reminisced.

"That doesn't answer the question!"

"Myself and a few of my refined drinking companions stole all the wine we could carry and abandoned ship," the dandy gestured toward a collection of empty bottles.

"How did you manage to get so much wine if Ronan confiscated it?" Noah asked.

"It takes more than walls to stop me!" the playboy replied as red-lifeforce appeared on his skin. It spread out to cover his body until the foppish man's figure was obscured. All that could be seen was red-lifeforce as the man turned translucent to become ethereal. "I'll give you a demonstration."

The silhouette of faintly red light spoke as it turned then walked through the yellow lifeboat wall before arriving at the bloated corpse of his dead companion. The semi-transparent form reached into the open wound of the slumped body. It had toppled after the seal removed the swordfish head that was keeping it upright. As the onlookers watched, the silhouette pulled its hand out while holding a similarly transparent glowing object.

The dandy returned to corporeal form and held up towards the crowd between his thumb and forefinger was a blood-covered clear origin crystal belonging to his blank companion. The open wound of the corpse remained unchanged while the man's hands stayed unblemished.

Noah heard muttered curses of "witch…" from the crowd standing behind him as the dandy casually tossed the crystal to Noah as he kicked aside a few of the empty bottles at his feet. The dandy paused as he noticed something of interest. He stooped down to pick up a bottle at his feet. The dandy straightened while holding a stoppered half-full wine bottle with a foolish grin.
