《ARC》Book 1 Chapter 59 Unfamiliar Faces

The oarsman said nothing as he relinquished his spot to Noah, only silently accepting the filled bucket of water before passing it to the next man in line. The heart-wrenching screams of pain and terror from the grade three flying whale still echoed in Noah's ears, yet they had stopped long ago as the fishing trawler fled from the transformed cruise ship. They had lost sight of the cruise ship sometime during the night.

The people onboard the cruise ship had noticed the relatively small fishing vessel observing their harvest of the flying whale and its companions, yet chose to ignore them as they were too poor and insignificant for their attention. Although it appears someone had taken notice of them.

"Look over there!" someone anonymously called out while pointing towards the ocean on the aft side of the fishing boat.

Noah recognized a heavily damaged yellow lifeboat as belonging to the 'Poseidon' approaching them in the early morning red light. The yellow lifeboat seemed to be drawn to the fishing trawler like a magnet. It appeared to be aimlessly floating while following the ocean currents. Currents were the only thing that could be relied on to navigate after the apocalypse's arrival without any tools or the stars to guide them.

As the lifeboat drew near, Noah could see the damage the yellow enclosed capsule had sustained. The entirety of one side had been neatly torn off to reveal the lifeboat's interior and the remains of what was once people inside.

The severed head of a swordfish pierced through the chest of a struggling soulless wearing a glamorous red cocktail dress. It was sitting on the lap of a dead young gentleman killed by the swordfish impaling his throat. The young man's bloated corpse showed signs of decay, indicating that he had been dead for several days. His features remained relatively unchanged, while the soulless sitting on his lap seemed to be striving to reach something obscured from Noah's view.

The corpse was dressed in a designer tuxedo displaying his status. His face was contorted in an expression of permanent surprise at how he died. The bloody pointed nose of the swordfish became visible outside. It was revealed jutting through the capsule wall as the yellow lifeboat turned listlessly in the water.

"What the…?" Greg had appeared at Noah's side as they stood beside the fishing trawler's railing, watching the lifeboat's approach.

"Is that someone still alive on board?" Noah asked as he shielded his eyes against the glare of the fiery sky.

Noah leaned forward in the yellow lifeboat's direction while squinting to examine the heavy damage. The capsule completed a full turn in the water, allowing him to discover what the soulless was attempting to reach.

Sitting casually inside the lifeboat, appearing undisturbed by the soulless's attempts to reach him, sat an extremely handsome young playboy from the cruise ship. Noah was confident that he had never met the young man before because he was the type of person who would leave an impression. He appeared foppish wearing an unblemished navy coloured winter coat of the latest fashion with a partially unbuttoned white shirt underneath, paired with a matching scarf. He wore stylish leather dress shoes on full display as he sat with his foot comfortably resting atop his knee.

The young dandy elegantly sipped red wine from a crystal glass. His free hand rested leisurely on top of an elegant black lacquered walking stick featuring a silver handle cast in the shape of a lion. He wore a silver lion-head ring on the thumb of his hand, resting on the decorative walking stick.

Across from him was the hairless, demonic soulless which continued to struggle against the decapitated swordfish head piercing through its chest. Restraining it from reaching the handsome gentleman lost in thought, gazing leisurely at the approaching fishing trawler. He was tapping his finger on his opulent cane to an unknown rhythm while holding a half-filled wine glass poised against his chin, forgotten about in his other hand.

While Noah watched, a seal surfaced in between the fishing trawler and the damaged lifeboat. The seal glanced towards the men gathered on the fishing boat before gazing hungrily at the rotting head of the swordfish. Suddenly, the seal charged soundlessly toward the yellow capsule opening, leaving ripples in its wake as it swam through the water.

After the seal arrived at the damaged lifeboat's broken entrance, it dragged itself heavily out of the water. The seal effortlessly dodged a violent swipe from the restrained soulless as it turned its attention to the seal's approach. The seal snatched the swordfish head before diving into the frigid ice-cold water with its trophy. The shadow of the seal quickly disappeared beneath the lapping waves as the soulless stumbled into the ocean in pursuit, ignoring the dandy sitting across from it, watching in interest.

The soulless didn't even struggle as it sank into the freezing ocean water. Noah and the rest of the crew on board the fishing vessel watched in stunned silence at the soulless's senseless actions. A bellowing heartfelt chuckle began, returning their attention to the impeccably dressed gentleman sitting inside the lifeboat.

The dapper young man silently toasted his wine glass toward the soulless that had stumbled into the ocean with no sense of self-preservation whatsoever. He almost choked on a mouthful of wine, unable to contain his mirth, before sitting comfortably back into his seat to await rescue.

"It's good to see that they're not very bright…" Greg spoke rhetorically to anyone listening.

"I'd like to say that was the first time I've seen that happen, but I once watched one take a swan-dive head-first into some concrete in its rush to get at me back on land," Noah replied as he reminisced about the soulless back in the warehouse the night before the [Trial Phase] ended.

"Hahaha, that would've been entertaining. I can imagine your reaction as you're standing there shitting your pants, but suddenly the thing is just twitching on the ground while you're just watching with your stomach in your mouth as it necked itself," Greg responded with a guffaw.

"That's almost exactly how it happened. They're not particularly dangerous on their own. It's when they swarm together that they're terrifying," Noah said while letting out a snort of amusement.

"All of you get out of the way. I am about to bring it on board," Roger commanded the oarsmen, interrupting their discussion as blue-lifeforce appeared on his skin.
