《ARC》Book 1 Chapter 58 Whale Call

Green-lifeforce created a glow in the ocean surrounding the sinking fishing trawler as it flowed through the vessel's reinforced hull to repair the enormous punctures caused by the crab and its prey, the hammerhead shark.
Lightning once again flashed in the distance, lighting the heavily damaged fishing trawler as the gathered oarsmen formed a chain gang to bail water from the flooded interior over the side of the boat.
Noah looked towards the lightning flash in time to see that it originated from a large seabird that was currently defending the flying whale. Noah interrupted the rhythm of the bailing as he paused to watch what was happening, causing the oarsman who had let go of the bucket to curse as it spilled onto the deck.
Noah took a step towards the rail as he saw an ominous silhouette that looked vaguely familiar illuminated by the flash. Ice harpoons flew past the flying whale to hit one of the defending seagulls, sending it spiralling downwards towards the ocean where something appeared to drag it under the water in a bubble of blood.
Noah saw all of this in the brief second the lightning bolt lingered in the air as it struck against a heavily modified cruise ship, which Noah recognized even after its alterations. It was the cruise ship 'Poseidon,' but it looked completely different now. Salvage from boats and ships had been grafted onto the sides to reinforce its hull. Two plates pressed together at the ship's bow to form a giant uneven ram with a rough surface, forged from the hulls of recovered boats.
As Noah watched, the enormous ram began to separate in the centre. Orange-lifeforce flowed through the giant plates, revealing the cruise ship's bottom levels. The interior had been gutted to create a chop-shop to dismantle boats that were hung suspended by chains, illuminated by intense orange light flowing through the ship. The suspended boats were in varying stages of stripping as they remained stored, hanging from the ceiling.

Three metal harpoons anchored by chains to the ship's opening flew from a poorly-crafted ballista, stationed below the dismantled boats. The harpoons slammed into the side of the whale with a spray of blood. The whale released a sorrowful cry.
『Leave us be, we mean you no harm!』The whale pleaded.
The only response the whale received was massive war drums deep in the heart of the cruise ship began to beat in rhythm as people gathered at the winches belonging to the chains attached to the harpoons embedded in the whale.
The amassed people began to wind the winch to reel the whale in towards the cruise ship's opening, which appeared to contain horizontal blunt metal teeth that interlocked together to form the ram. As the whale was slowly being drawn in, the alpha seagull dived to release a lightning bolt once again. It struck three of the crewmen operating the ballista's winch, completely charing their remains black as their bodies began to smoulder, killing them instantly.
The seagull didn't get away uninjured as another ice harpoon appeared from the walkway above it, piercing through its wing. The seabird spiralled from the air in a rough descent. It managed to control the trajectory of its landing atop the flying whale. The seabird retaliated towards the ice harpoon's origin with a lightning bolt, causing a massive explosion. No more ice attacks came from the walkway, from who Noah assumed to be Craig.
Another metal harpoon was fired from the ballista inside the ominous, almost unrecognizable cruise ship. This time aimed at the alpha seagull, which was no longer able to dodge atop the flying whale because of its injuries. The harpoon pierced through the seabird's throat, interrupting the blue-lifeforce gathering at its mouth to fire another lightning bolt.
The flying whale let out a mournful cry as the alpha seabird was pulled from its back to collapse into the ocean below as it was being dragged in by the winch attached to the metal harpoon through its throat.

『Noo! My friend, I will be joining you soon!』
Giant meat grinders covered with old blood and scraps of flesh appeared. They were revealed behind the ballista as a covering was pulled back on the floor. The giant grinders were elevated into place, blocking the chopshop's opening as waves splashed over the side to wash remnant carrion meat from the metal teeth. Attracting scavengers in the water nearby.
The flying whale was slowly approaching the giant grinders as orange lifeforce appeared on the vast meat grinder's surface as they began rotating. The flying whale attempted to wrench itself free of the harpoons embedded in its body as white fog froze the ocean's surface suspended in waves while the grinders halted in place.
The whale managed to pull free of one metal harpoon, but it could not remove the two remaining harpoons. The ice below the whale erupted in a shower of ice shards as manipulated water burst through the frozen surface, wrapping the flying whale. The water restraints dragged the whale the remaining distance into the ship's mechanical maw while the surviving seabirds fled.
The last thing Noah saw was the silhouette of the whale pulled inside the hollowed interior of the cruise ship. Illuminated by radiantly glowing orange-lifeforce, the grinders began turning as the gates slammed closed. Blocking the flying whale's escape and the onlooker's sight of what unfortunate fate befell the flying whale.
The whale's cries of pain echoed across the distance between the two vessels. The screams could be heard by Noah and the rest of the people on board, causing them to pause from bailing water from the half-submerged fishing trawler as they listened in sympathetic silence.
Noah let out a deep sigh as he released his tight grip on the fishing boat's railing to retrieve the basket which had been dropped at his feet earlier. He then walked past an oarsman who had been bailing water, replacing him wordlessly. The man didn't object as Noah sought to distract himself from the whale's anguished screams in the distance.

Sometimes, even the most outright affront to liberty seems to be justified under certain contexts. Or maybe I should stop reading about Stalin, I think it's affecting me.
