《ARC》Book 1 Chapter 57 Hammer And Claw

The fishing vessel suddenly lurched upwards, throwing Louis against the wall while Noah fell backward onto the floor as he rolled over his shoulder back to his feet while sliding backward in a crouch.

"What was that?" Louis asked with concern.

"That felt like we were hit by something!" Noah replied as water began to flood the hallway below deck while cries of alarm came from on deck.

Roger charged out from the closed door while pushing past Noah and the boy. Giving them a warning look as he hesitated, seeing them outside before continuing to hurry up the stairs. Noah paused as he considered entering the room to finally kill the comatose guard and end his torment of Louis.

"Noah, leave it! He'll probably drown anyway!" Louis tugged at Noah's arm as there was a sound of tearing metal followed by an increase in water pouring into the boat. The water had risen to waist height as the frigid ocean water flooded in from the stern.

Noah reached the stairs as there was a crash behind him. Noah and the boy turned to look behind them. The pair watched with horror as the head of an intimidating hammerhead shark rammed its head through an interior wall making splashes as it flailed to squeeze itself through the hole it had created.

The hammerhead shark ignored the pair as it shook itself off in a daze. It seemed to be running from something as it continued to flee towards another wall inside the fishing vessel. Before it could escape, a claw tore through the bottom of the hull to grasp the hammerhead shark as it lifted it silently struggling from the water.

The enormous claw belonged to an unknown crustacean, which clamped down, bisecting the panicked shark in a shower of blood. There was a keening of metal as the claw withdrew from the hole it had created in the reinforced hull. An alien eye appeared from the water to gaze through the fissure.

Noah felt its gaze fall briefly on his withered form before moving past the pair, lingering briefly on Louis before continuing its search to find its prey. After the crustacean discovered the floating halves of the hammerhead shark, a suction force appeared. It entirely drained the bloody water from inside the fishing trawler. The hammerhead shark's severed body was dragged silently across the floor, leaving a bloody trail behind it.

Noah and Louis clung desperately to the stairwell's rails to resist the suction force. Seawater once again flooded into the twin holes in the reinforced hull once the suction disappeared. Noah and Louis shared silent communication of their horror at what they had just witnessed.

Noah followed Louis up the stairs onto the deck to encounter a scene of carnage. Blood and entrails of the crew were spread everywhere, along with severed body parts. The deck was overrun by crabs, ranging from the size of an adult man to as large as a small van. Some of the crabs bore asymmetrical claws, with one appearing extremely overgrown compared to the other.

The sky had become dark with large hail pouring down, causing the deck to become precarious to stand on. The oarsmen fended off the slow-moving crabs while they retreated into the makeshift huts built in the centre of the deck, leaving themselves nowhere to escape. Overgrown crabs climbed the temporary houses as their walls protested against the weight.

"They shouldn't be here or attacking humans, let alone sharks. Nothing makes sense anymore!" Louis said with his thick accent.

Louis apparently recognized the crab species. It may have something to do with why he was at sea when the arrival happened.

There was a splash in the water flooding the boat behind Noah. Louis was shoved into the middle of the milling crabs, illuminated by lightning in the distance. The deck of the fishing vessel was briefly revealed to Noah in the flash. The crab's alien forms could be seen glowing with subtle white-lifeforce on their exoskeletons' surface, indicating that they were all grade-two and possibly higher.

Louis sprawled in the middle of the deck, frozen in panic, causing Noah to turn. He saw the white guard, Zane, framed in the darkness. Zane had fully regrown his missing appendages. He was wielding his deceased companion's makeshift spear while he waded out of the half-submerged staircase. Zane suddenly used the butt of his spear to shove Louis forward unexpectedly. The guard spat out curses at the scrambling boy in their shared language while hefting the spear menacingly at Noah. He indicated Noah to go outside with an ushering motion.

Noah cautiously backed out of the stairwell, keeping himself between Louis and the enraged guard. The crazed guard became red-faced from anger attempting to threaten Noah out of the way as he refused to move any further. Louis was tentatively seated on the ground behind Noah as he stood in the middle of the deck. The crabs had turned their attention away from the rundown huts toward the easier prey that had presented itself.

Zane hadn't noticed that they were surrounded by giant crabs in his delirium. He drew the crab's attention as he emerged from the stairwell, yelling obscenities while attempting to attack Noah with the spear.

"You may want to look around you," Noah said to the guard, who only spat in his direction, not understanding his words.

Noah gestured widely with his hand to indicate the silently watching crabs as another lightning bolt in the distance illuminated the deck. Zane finally noticed the danger he had just put himself in as he dropped the makeshift spear from trembling hands. The white guard turned back towards the stairwell only to discover the dark ocean water preventing his escape.

"There's nowhere for you to run. You brought this on yourself," Noah mocked the guard for forcing all of them into this situation.

The giant crab claw from earlier broke through the water's surface to drag one of its careless brethren into its mouth, which had strayed too close to the railing. Noah stumbled but regained his balance as a massive wave hit the boat, caused by the colossal crab surfacing. Its alien eyes watched the survivors and crabs indiscriminately to choose their next meal.

The monster seemed to be attracted to whatever contained the most vitality, regardless of friend or foe. The smaller crabs appeared to understand this as they began to retreat into the ocean. The giant crabs' leader pursued them while ignoring the weak humans standing shocked on the deck. The sea returned to calm as the colossal crab submerged itself beneath the waves. The only evidence of the crew's close encounter with death was the gore spread across the deck.
