《Demon King 101》Prologue: A farewell to the old world
Advertisement
I once heard this saying: “The fate of everyone were determined since birth.”. That roughly means you were born for a reason, and live for that reason. What is called “The freedom of choice” is nothing more than an illusion fate itself created to hide the truth of our world: Humans are nothing but mere puppets in the hands of destiny.
Heh, that sounds a bit edgy, isn’t it? I know. If I ever have the chance to meet the one who made such belief, I probably would punch him in the face.
I am, by no means, a special snowflake to speak of grandiose nonsensical buzzwords, but I still believe the ability to change our own fate is what keeps humans from falling to the weight of our existence. What happened to humanity are not the result of fate, but rather from the choices they made. Karma, of sort. It’s simple: You reap what you sow; Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, like the old saying goes.
Some may wonder why am I spouting philosophical gibberish in my head. Well, fate and destiny seem to be a relevant answer to think about when you got beamed up from your comfy chair in your house’s library by an unknown light from the sky.
I don’t believe I had ever done anything wrong to make karma send a beam of light down on me. If not, I won't have to make time to think about all these nonsensical pretentious philosopical bullshit. Whoever did this to me must have a very twisted sense of humor.
The feeling of being beamed away isn’t exactly pleasant if I must say. Still, by the time it ends, I feel no loss of limbs or inner organs, and hey, no out-of-world-transportation sickness, so that’s a plus! Won't make a good first impression if I make a mess on the ground!

My attempt to think positive thoughts fails the moment the beam of light fades away. The first noticeable thing I see is the sky above. A grayish but beautiful sky, not too different from the one I used to see on a cloudy day. This isn’t that bad...is my thought too until I get my body up and start to look around.
In front of my eyes stand a bunch of people, both male and female, mostly youths, in black garbs like a cult. Some of them look humanlike. The others? Not so much. They are like magical people straight out of a teenage fantasy book written on the internet by unemployed youth with too much free time. Not only that, there are also a bunch of magical beasts you can only see in fantasy movies standing nearby. I can’t use any words to describe them, the best I could do is describing this experience as “otherworldly”...or "nonsensical".
Normally I would consider this a dream, if not for the fact that my dreams usually aren’t this delusional. I’m already past my “Eighth-grader syndrome” phase, goddamnit!
The moment I turn my head to look around, the strange people begin to give me looks that scream “Oh my holy God in Heaven, the wretched Satan is here!”. That’s not nice, you know. In this situation, it’s me who should give you people that look. And Satan only killed ten people or so according to the Bible.
"Are you...human?"
I hear a voicefrom behind my back. In that direction lies a lone girl. A beautiful girl with red eyes and equally long hair with the same color. She is wearing a white plain shirt tied at the neck by a black string cravat and a foot length long simple black skirt. She is crouching with one of her knee touching the ground, her hands set on what would seem to be a magic circle you can find in movies about cultists, or anime, whatever. Now that I actually look at it, it seems like I'm currently standing on top of the center of that circle, like some sort of sacrificial lamb. Or rather, after putting one thing and another into thought, I come to the conclusion that I got summoned here from my own world, by this young, beautiful lady near me.

Karma! It’s all karma’s fault!
"Good day to you, too."
I utter my last words to that beautiful girl as someone strikes me in the back of my head, which of course causes me to fall down to the ground. My eyes become heavy and thus, I give in and let myself fall unconscious.
