《The King is Back》Chapter 1 - A Lonely Life

The rustling of wind is heard throughout the forest. In an open field, a boy is fighting an invisible opponent while dripping sweat from his body. He looks vaguely like a teenager of 16 years of age. His pitch black wavy hair shakes with each punch he pulled. His face cannot be categorized as handsome in the traditional sense, but his sharp look draws a mysteriously attractive air around him. His brown bronze skin shines brilliantly out in the sun.
“Hyaah!” The boy screamed as he maneuvers his fists into empty air while occasionally kicking with deadly forces. Each punch or kick he pulls generate a small sonic boom which causes the grass around him to shake. The boy's skill is amazing. He seems to already be an expert in fighting and would win in any fight.
After two more hours of training and countless droplets of sweat later, he starts to walk back into the forest and exiting the open field.
“Hmm… I can’t seem to replicate father’s movements but every day I notice slight improvements in my techniques. If only father was here I would have mastered this years ago.” The boy muttered.
The trees seem to stretch into the sky and covering many of the sunlight, leaving the forest’s floor relatively dark. One would imagine that with this dreary aura surrounding the forest, there would be unknown dangers lurking in every corner but all that can be heard is silence with the occasional chirping of harmless birds.
Throughout his walk through the forest, he keeps talking to himself. Perhaps his loneliness from the isolation in the forest drove him to come up with a mechanism to combat those feelings, which is engaging in monologues with himself. After walking for quite some time, the boy arrives in a river.

“I have arrived in the river, I wonder how many fish I caught today.” The boy said in anticipation.
The boy starts to collect fish from the traps he set up previously. The fish are big, measuring at least 1 meter each.
“Five! This will last me a couple of days! Time to head back.” The boy said excitedly.
After jumping around in joy, he walks again into the forest until he founds a huge boulder resting against a small hill.
“Frasta Buka." The boy started to chant in an unknown language and the previously normal-looking boulder opens up in a dramatic fashion. The boy starts to enter his “house”.
“Aah man I'm beat... well time to start cooking and have dinner.”
This was the boy’s daily routine in the forest. Training, collecting the fishes he caught, go home and repeat. The forest does not allow the boy to do anything else. There is no prey to hunt nor are there any dangerous predators. The boy was always curious why the forest is like that but he is also happy that he does not have to fight anything deadly.
The house seems a bit bigger than what you would expect from the outside. It consists of three bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, a library, a living room, and a basement. What’s more, the pieces of furniture have an intricate design which looks a bit minimalist that looks more comfortable yet not as luxurious as the one you would find in noble’s houses. Furthermore, unknown technologies were littered throughout the house. The kitchen the boy used has the ability to light up without any external power and automatic ceiling fans can be seen rotating in the ceiling. The insides of the house are supposed to be dark but light bulbs can also be seen.

The boy has always been curious about the sources of these devices around his house. For as long as he can remember, his parents have used these technological items. But when the boy starts to read books about the knowledge of the world, he found no clue that this world's civilization is advanced enough to possess the technology he has in his house.
After finishing his meal and shower, the boy went to the library where he sits and opens a book.
“Time to study again... Father always taught me that knowledge is power so I never missed a day of studying. What’s for today again?...ah it’s Economics and History.” The boy muttered.
Living in isolation inside a forest does not mean the boy is ignorant. On the contrary, ever since childhood, his parents taught him knowledge of the world, science, and other subjects. They always emphasized how important it is to learn but they also taught him to train his bodies with the martial art they left him.
After finishing everything, the boy went to his room and lay down in the spacious bed.
“...How long has it been since father and mother left already? Six years?... Do they even have names? I only knew them as “father and mother”. Do I...have a name? I don’t even have anything to refer to myself by. Well, I guess what use is a name when I don’t have anyone to talk to.” Said the boy in a sad tone.
On a cold winter six years ago, his parents suddenly disappeared. At first, the boy thought something happened to them but after seeing a letter tucked under his pillow, he was told the reason for their disappearance.
“An errand in the city...really? For six years? For fuck’s sake I can’t really leave this place if you guys don’t come back... *sigh*...No use complaining I guess...at least that’s what you taught me, mother...to never complain about your situation and wallow in self-pity.”
After a long monologue before bedtime, the boy starts to fell asleep. This is the lonely life that he has lead in this forest for all his life. If nothing out of the ordinary happens, It’s going to be normal routine again tomorrow. But little do the boy knows, tomorrow is going to be a day that changes not only his life but the whole world forever.

As revenge against a common enemy boils in his blood, Aralt struggles to do his oath-sworn duty and secure sanctuary for the heir-apparent to a mystical dynasty. But instead of safety, every step brings them closer to danger: sky pirates, cannibals, and a relentless soulless scourge unleashed by their enemy are all intent on killing Lian—or worse. Death, Aralt realizes, might be the greater mercy. ---------------------------------------------------------- What to Expect: Character-driven Plot Novel Pacing (which I accept isn't typical for serials) Elaborate Worldbuilding (you gotta pay attention) Soul-bonded Swords Sentient Wolves Longish Chapters What Not to Expect: Litrpg (sorry!) Harem (not sorry!) Magic System Short Chapters Dancing Bears (at least so far) Seriously, this is a second-world low fantasy/science-fantasy featuring a strong, but flawed male protagonist, a cheeky teenage boy that’s driving him crazy, a wee bit o’ Scots flavor, and a whole lot of culture clashing. I’m preparing to relaunch this story on Kindle once the second and third books are ready and I’d love some feedback as I move through those revisions. I'm serious about the feedback. All comments are welcome. I'll name a characters after you. And kill them, if you want. :) Oh, did I mention soulless assassins and cannibals? Yeah, Aralt’s day is not getting any better. cover image by brosedesignz
