《Art of Mortality》Chapter 5: The World of Cultivation

The sun shined upon the village, morning birds were singing, leaving their nests to search for food. Edward was sitting beside Snow, who just regained consciousness.
"I'm not dead? What happened? What about the demons?", Snow asked as soon as she regained consciousness.
"The demons died", said Edward.
"Died?How?"
"The last attack you threw at the demons seriously wounded them. After you passed out, they also somehow died.", Edward hid the truth. Actually, he wasn't sure how to explain to her the truth that he had killed the demons. He himself wasn't even sure about how he managed to kill off the demons. He did not even properly understand what happened.
"I thought my last attack didn't manage to finish them off. Due to the incomplete seal which the demons managed to place on me the last time, I couldn't use my full power.", said Snow.
"I don't know. Your last attack seemed very powerful.", Edward feigned ignorance.
"Ah! How?", suddenly, Snow exclaimed.
"What Happened?"
"The seal! It's gone!"
"Really? That's good news then!"
"But when? How?"
"Maybe during your last attack when you used all of your powers, it somehow broke.", said Edward.
"Maybe. Then this explains how the demons died.", Snow agreed. She wasn't clear about everything but it was the only explanation.
She suddenly remembered a scene. It was like a dream but in this dream, she saw Edward standing in front of the demons like a mighty being. The demons died one after another and Edward, with a mighty aura, instantly killed the demon leader who was trembling in fear in front of Edward.
The dream felt too real. Even now that she is awake, the scene was crystal clear in her mind.
'What am I thinking? How can something like that be real? Edward is just a mortal. He knows nothing about martial cultivation. It's just a weird dream.'
She wondered if she wanted Edward to be really her savior. If Edward really were a mighty cultivator, maybe she would be freed from her burdens. Maybe she wouldn't have to marry Julian. She thought back to the past six months she spent in Edward's house. She wondered how it would be if she was also an ordinary mortal like Edward, free of the burdens she had to carry as the princess of her clan, free of the struggles that one had to face in the world of martial arts. How good would that be, if she was also a mortal, and could spend the rest of her life living with another mortal, someone like Edward? She could have a simple family, a simple life, free from the darkness of the martial world.

Suddenly, a scene came into her mind. In that scene, she and Edward were living in this village, with their children. They lived a happy life like an ordinary happy family, free from the worries of this vast world.
"What is wrong with me? Why do I keep imagining myself with Edward?", Snow suddenly shouted in her mind as her face turned red.
Finally, after a while, she calmed down and decided to divert her mind by talking.
"Well, whatever happened, happened. I'm just glad that I am now freed from the demons' seal. Also, with all of the last squad being dead, there won't be any reinforcements after this.", said Snow.
Actually, Edward knew that it probably happened when he unknowingly and somehow magically killed the demons. At that time, an aura was released from his body. The aura triggered something on Snow's unconscious body, a sound of something like a lock being broken was heard. Edward didn't know much about cultivation and cultivators but watching Snow for a few months, he could at least understand a little bit about them. These magical things have become somewhat acceptable and understandable to him with time. Besides, he has read and heard many tales and stories about cultivation and cultivators. There were martial cultivators in the army of this kingdom, although he had never seen them. But his father had a few opportunities to see them, as the general his father worked under was also a martial artist. Although none of the powerful leaders in the army was as amazing as Snow. Her power is on a completely different level. That too was when most of her powers were sealed. How powerful will she be at full power then? Edward couldn't even imagine. His father used to give him books to read, and many books were actually novels on adventures of cultivators. There were stories about trash young master of an influential clan suddenly becoming a genius through some miracle, stories about ordinary young cultivators finding some ancient legacy or legendary item and using them to become peerless genius cultivators. In the past, in his mind, those were just stories, and an unimaginable world to him. But after seeing Snow, he came to understand that a world of cultivation does exist. The world was vast and the place he lived in was just a remote corner of a small country, so it is very normal for him to not know anything about martial cultivators and martial arts cultivation. Meeting Snow was purely by chance. 'I should take this chance and learn something from Snow', he thought.

"Snow"
"What?"
"I want to know about cultivators and cultivation. I want to become a martial cultivator.", Edward suddenly said.
"Why? The world of cultivators is a cruel and complex one. It much better to live as a mortal.", Snow said with a sigh. She was carrying heavy burdens. In her mind, she wished she were never born in a clan of martial artists. She would be happier if she were born as an ordinary village girl in a remote village like the Tulip Village.
"Still. I want to understand the mysteries of the world. I am curious and interested to become a martial cultivator and see the world for myself."
"It isn't as easy as you think.
"If it was really easy then there would be no point to it.", Edward was determined.
Snow understood the determination within Edward. To be honest, she also wanted to see how far Edward could go as a martial cultivator.
"Ok then. First, I'll have to check your spiritual pulse and soul.", seeing his determination, she agreed.
"How will you do that?"
"Give me your hand", she said and grabbed his hand.
Edward was feeling a little embarrassed. This was the first time he held a girl's hand.
Snow closed her eyes, it seemed she was focusing on something. Soon, there was a glow of light coming out from both of their bodies.
"Hmm. The spiritual pulse is weak but acceptable. You can cultivate. I'm gonna check your soul now. Close your eyes and relax.", she said.
Edward did as Snow said. Snow also closed her eyes, focusing on something.
"What? How can it be?", she suddenly exclaimed.
"What is it?"
"Your soul, it's incomplete."
"What does it mean?"
"It means your soul will never be able to grow, and it is very weak. Although you can cultivate, your progress will be very slow and the highest level of cultivation you can reach will be very limited.", she said.
"Is it bad?", asked Edward.
"Very bad, but acceptable as you come from a mortal background. Ultimately, you are a mortal who doesn't have a powerful lineage or special bloodline. Well, it doesn't matter. This country doesn't have any high-level cultivators anyway so after several years, you can still get a position for yourself."
Edward smiled bitterly. He knew in his heart that what he wanted wasn't to be some bigshot in this small country. He wanted to enter the true world of martial arts cultivation and reach a level where he can stand side by side with Snow one day. Snow had a fiance, but it didn't matter. He heard from Snow that it was just a marriage pact between two clans. Snow doesn't love his fiance, he doesn't even know him that much. If Edward became a very powerful cultivator one day, Edward can take a marriage proposal to her clan and be worthy of her. But now, hearing from Snow that his cultivation talent isn't much, he was lost and didn't know what to do.
'There has to be something more to it, something Snow couldn't see', he thought. Or else, how did he manage do kill those demons just by accidentally releasing an aura? There is probably some kind of power hidden deep within him. This is the reason he didn't lose hope even after what Snow said.
"But Snow was right. I come from a mortal lineage and don't have anything special about me. So where did that power inside me come from?", He was quite confused.

Life of a Core
After a disembodied voice had told him he was what amounted to an exceptionally talented rock, it had been hard to not let it go to his non-existent head. Until, random chance had decided to give him a square kick in the minerals. Which had in turn forced him to fend for himself in an unknown land, all while he attempted to make sense of his place in the world. Truthfully though, all he had really wanted to do from the start had been to bury himself a hundred feet below the ground and be left to his own devices. Yet, for one reason or another, nobody ever seemed willing to leave the dungeon-building core alone long enough to actually make one. Each chapter will average around two to three thousand words, the release schedule is still a WIP but you should expect the first six chapters to be released over the next six days. This is planned out as a dungeon building fiction, but don't expect it right off the bat! The story is a depiction of the everyday adventures (alongside an overarching plot) of what I imagine a dungeon core would experience when thrust into a random environment where everything and everyone tried to covet or eat him. I also really enjoy reading the comments and reviews people leave and would love to get some reader involvement with the story itself, likely through polls at the end of each chapter. I hope you enjoy my story! (If you feel like some of the characters seem familiar, you may have read some older work I wrote a while back under a different account. If you happen to be one of my old readers and recognize the similarities, I'm happy to have you back!)
