《Art of Mortality》Chapter 3: Flying Swan

"What? You're leaving?", Edward was shocked by this sudden revelation.
"Yes, I can't stay here forever, right?", Snow smiled hearing his question.
"But you've not fully recovered. What if those black shadows find you?"
"You mean those devils? It is very unlikely. They only know about my general direction. Finding me in this vast and remote segment of the continent is nearly impossible. Besides, I need to contact my clan as soon as possible. If I'm late, there might be more complications", she said solemnly.
Hearing this, Edward could only lower his head. He was reluctant to part, even after knowing that their worlds are far apart. Inside his mind, he saw images. He saw a glowing white silhouette, a beautiful face with a serious look, running on the air under the moonlight, like a dancing fairy. He remembered the elegant girl he named "Snow". He remembered how happy he felt inside his heart every day after returning home from the town market when he entered his house and saw Snow gazing at the forest. Sometimes, he would wake up in the middle of the night and find out Snow sitting on the roof, watching the moon with her enchanting eyes. She seemed like a celestial being. He remembered how every time Snow uttered the name "Edward", he would feel unknown happiness inside. He was happy when he saw Snow being interested in his lifestyle. He could see in her eyes, that his carefree and bright nature had left an impression inside Snow's mind. He still felt that they shared some kind of connection, and he wanted to know what that connection was.
"It can't be that you have feelings for me, right?", she suddenly asked.
"What? No way! I, I....", Edward didn't know what to say hearing this question all of a sudden.
"It's alright. I'm just joking. Besides, I have a fiance.", she said, smiling.
'She has finance?' Edward suddenly felt a stabbing pain in his heart hearing this. 'What am I thinking? It's not like she is gonna marry ME if she didn't have a fiance.', he controlled his thoughts.
"When are you leaving?", collecting his thoughts, Edward asked the question.

"Tonight", she replied.
"Tonight?"
"Yes. Nighttime is the best for traveling undetected by anyone."
"Oh, Ok. I understand.", Edward said as he hid his inner feelings, the pain he felt.
Snow didn't say anything else. She only wondered about the past six months. She remembered how this boy named Edward, although the same age as her, had a different vibe than everyone else. He was just a mortal, just a poor boy working hard for his livings. Yet, there was something unique about his attitude that overshadowed all the talented young prodigies she knew from her place. But for some weird reason, as she observed him more and more, she found that his talking style, his hand gestures, his behaviors, everything about him felt so familiar. It was as if she once knew such a person. Why does she feel that way? She didn't know.

The day quickly passed as night fell. Edward was standing at the edge of the forest, watching Snow's silhouette slowly disappear in the darkness, the silhouette he can never forget. All of a sudden, tears started to roll on his cheeks.
"What am I crying for? She is a Majestic Swan soaring through the sky, flying towards her own world, while I am just a foolish frog at the bottom of a small well, dreaming to fly along with the swan. What is the point in crying over such a foolish dream?"
Turning back, he started walking towards his house. At this moment, he was feeling very empty in his heart. Losing his father at a very young age has been a heavy blow to him and his family, and then, in a few years, his mother also died. From then on, he has been living his life without any greater purpose, growing vegetables and chopping woods, only for survival, like a mere mortal. His father was a brave soldier and named him Edward Alexander, named after two mighty kings. In the end, his father was just an ordinary foot soldier, whose death didn't matter to the country, his mother was just a weak woman who died from overworking, and he, also, was no king, just a lowly peasant who accidentally met a goddess, an immortal fairy-like girl, and he somehow was foolish enough to fall in love with her.

Soon, the night was getting darker and darker. Everything was getting gloomy and lonely. He was dazedly walking towards his house. The atmosphere was getting chilly. He started shivering as the cold wind blew past him.
"Wait, cold?"
Suddenly, he thought of something. Instantly, he turned towards the forest. He saw icy winds coming from inside the forest. Also, he could hear some noises coming from deep within the forest.
"It's not even near winter, so there's no way snowy winds will be blowing inside the forest at this time of the year. It's definitely her! She's fighting, and she's definitely in trouble! Those black shadows failed to kill her the last time, and this time they've definitely sent stronger reinforcements!", he thought.
"But what can I do?", he realized all of a sudden. "I'm just an ordinary boy.", he cried inside his mind. He didn't know what to do. Many thoughts flashed past his mind. Suddenly, he made his decision.
"It doesn't matter! Even if you die, I'll die with you. And If you survive and go back to your clan, I'll pursue you! I'll start cultivating martial arts and become an immortal being with powers, like you. If you are a majestic swan flying through heavens, then I shall no longer be the frog at the bottom of a well which I am now. I shall become a supreme existence, I will become powerful and hold my fate in my own hands!"
With resolution in his eyes, he started running towards the forest. All of a sudden, unnoticed by ordinary people, all of nature, literally anything and everything out there started to exude a primordial aura as if all of creation is terrified by something. Far across the vast worlds, powerful cultivators were snapped out of their meditation. Powerful overlords ruling over mighty sects and kingdoms started feeling unease in their hearts.
In a vast palace in the core region of the continent, there existed a divine tablet made of ancient jade. This tablet was called "Heaven's Fate". In this tablet was the power to monitor the heavens, and take a glimpse of its fate. It was monitored by one of the mightiest clan of this the world. Right now, that tablet was glowing with an unprecedented light. The clan elders, grand elders, the clan lord, even the mighty ancestors of the clan were alarmed.
"What is happening?", asked one of the ancestors.
"Ancestor, look! The tablet....", the clan lord replied with a shaky voice.
The ancestor looked at the direction of the tablet.
"What? Heaven's Fate is changing? But that's impossible. Nothing can change the Heavens!", the strongest among the ancestors said.
He has never even heard of anything like this before. Even when many heaven-defying persons appeared and became overlords throughout history, it didn't change the natural flow of the heavens. Some of these overlords ruled over thousands of worlds, and a few have managed to rule everything under the heavens, yet the flow of heaven's fate remains unaffected. This has been the case through all of eternity. What is happening now? How can the fate of the heavens change like this? Even when the first person who invented today's martial arts cultivation method and path, and started a new era, the First Paragon, succeeded in altering the heavenly laws to create the cultivation realms known to this era, he only managed to merge his own fate with the heaven's fate to alter some of the heavenly laws. He couldn't interrupt the heaven's fate, let alone change it. Then what is happening now?
"Ancestor, look!" His thoughts were interrupted by the clan lord's shaking voice.
Everyone's gaze focused on the tablet at the same time. There, they saw one sentence, Shining with majestic light. While the words were shining, Heaven's Fate tablet cracked and crumbled into dust, declaring the permanent change in heaven's fate. The words kept floating up, then it covered the entire sky. Everyone in the entire region could now clearly see the words. They read the words, again and again, shaking. The words said:
"THE HEAVENS AWAIT THE ULTIMATE PARAGON!"
