《Art of Mortality》Chapter 2: Delusions of a Mere Mortal

"You don't know anything?", asked Edward.
"I don't know.", she replied.
It seems she has no memory of what happened in the forest. After talking to her for a while, Edward realized she can't remember anything. Not her name, identity, or any event that took place before she woke up here.
"I found you in the forest. You were injured and unconscious.", Edward slowly explained everything.
"It seems the battle from that time somehow caused her to lose her memories. But she is an immortal, so she should be fine soon, right? But how long will it take? And what am I going to do about her till then?", Edward was lost in thoughts about handling the matter. Finally, he decided that he should let her stay in his house until he finds a solution.

More than half a year passed by. The girl seemed to be showing no sign of recovering her memories, and it seemed that she can't use her immortal powers either. At least, that's how it seemed to Edward. Every day, she would wake up early in the morning and start meditating. This meditation lasts till the night before she goes to sleep.
In this half-year time, the people of the village have been mostly talking about how Edward managed to woo a beautiful lady to become his wife. It has become a hot topic of the village as everyone was wondering about the origin of this beautiful young girl and why she would marry an orphan and peasant, like Edward. Hearing the rumors, Edward could only shake his head wryly. It seems that everyone in the village thinks this girl is his wife. Well, it is normal for them to think that as she has been living with him in his house for more than half a year. Also, it would be a lie if he claimed that he didn't have any feelings for her. In this half-year time, Edward has taken a liking to her, but that's just it. He has never thought too much about it. It is undeniable that the girl is very beautiful, and there is a very unique and pure charm about her. But he knows very well that this girl is an immortal, she belongs to a world he can not even imagine. She is bound to fly away one day when she recovers her powers and memories. She would one day disappear from his world as she appeared out of nowhere that night. His inner thoughts are bound to remain buried in his heart as delusions of a mere mortal.

But even he didn't know why he felt like that. Deep inside, he felt that he had a connection with that girl. He didn't know what kind of connection he had with her, or why he felt like that, but he just kept getting the feeling that he and she are connected, maybe by fate, or maybe by reincarnation.
In this period, he has given her a name. At first, Edward was always calling the girl "Immortal Lady". She didn't like to be called around "immortal Lady" by a boy the same age as her so she told him to call her something else. In the beginning, he was lost thinking about what to call her as he didn't know her real name. Then he remembered the beautiful ice and snow power she used to slay those black shadows, and decided upon calling her by the name "Snow".
At the moment, Snow was inside the house, seating in a mysterious position, seemingly deep in meditation. She suddenly opened her eyes when she detected Edward coming in.
"Do you have something to ask?", she asked.
"I've been meaning to ask you this question for quite a while. You don't remember anything and can't use your immortal powers. Then what are you trying to achieve by meditating like this?", asked Edward.
"Don't you find it weird that I couldn't remember anything about myself, yet I automatically knew that I am an immortal and I somehow lost my memories the very first day I woke up in your house?", Snow said.
"Now that you mention it, I find it confusing.", Edward said.
When she first woke up, Edward was very troubled thinking about the situation and wondering how he is going to make her realize the situation and also make her believe his explanations. But the shocking thing is he didn't need to explain much to her and Snow accepted everything he said and got a clear grasp at the situation. At first, he thought that's how her personality is. But the more he got to know her, the more he realized that her general personality is not very much different from an average 16-17 year aged young girl. Though she did have a natural aura and bearings of nobility in her but deep inside, she was still just a girl.

"Well, the thing is, me losing my memories isn't some "hit-to-the-head-amnesia" cliche. You can't make martial art cultivators lose their memories by injuring the head, or the brain in general. Normally, no matter what kind of damage is done to martial arts cultivator, they won't lose their memory, unless it is done by a very high-level martial arts cultivator using some kind of unique memory manipulation art. What really happened to me is when those black shadows failed to kill me, they tried to completely restrain me by using a powerful sealing art while calling for reinforcement. Fortunately, they failed to relay my exact location and only managed to inform their allies about which part of the continent I was in. Their sealing art almost succeeded but it wasn't complete. Hence they couldn't put any location tracing mark on me, nor could they completely immobilize me. But due to their sealing art, my sea of consciousness, meridians, and cultivation are sealed. A martial arts cultivator's 'mind and consciousness' is like a sea, the water is the thoughts and feelings of the martial arts cultivator, while the memories are the salt. That's why the world inside a martial arts cultivator's mind is called the Sea of Consciousness. Sealing the sea of consciousness is like separating the salt from the water, only thoughts remain, not the memories. When a cultivator's sea of consciousness is completely sealed, although they can't remember anything about themselves, they can still understand the general situation they are in and take actions based upon that. But this is temporary. The seals can't last very long either. In the past half years, with my meditation, more than half of my memories have returned. I have also recovered some of my cultivation. I was just waiting for the right time to tell you. I've been thinking about what to do since then. And today, I was waiting for you to come home so that I could tell you that I'm leaving.", she explained.

I've been writing for as long as I can remember, but I'd always been torn between different projects. That's why I decided to dedicate myself to a pretty strict schedule of writing and editing a single chapter every month since the start of 2019. This is an ongoing, work in progress novel that follows a ragtag group of sellswords as they delve into a lost city on the edge of the known world in search of their fortunes. Within, though, they find much more than they ever expected and find themselves in a race against time to unravel a mystery centuries old.
