《Art of Mortality》Chapter 1: The Girl Buried In Snow.

It was a small village surrounded by mountains and forests. At the first glance, the village was nothing extraordinary, but there was something about the village that gave people a feeling of home. There was a mysterious air about the village and the lack of residents made it even more detached from the norm.

The village had roads only towards the north, as this village was situated in the southmost part of Green Veil Country. Eastside had barren lands, then further on the east was a vast ocean. The western border of the village was covered by tall mountains. Some of the tallest mountains in the country were situated in that mountain range. It was really a sight to behold.

The southern part was the most mysterious. There was a dense and deep forest at the southern border of the village. That was not only the southmost border of the village but the border of the country itself. The vast forest was an intriguing existence for the people of the village, as well as the country itself. Everyone had the same question, 'what lies on the south of the southern border? What lies beyond the forest?'. But no one knew, as no one ever managed to cross the forest and go farther towards the south.

Whoever entered the forest would find the forest to be endless. It kept on going and going and going and going. No one ever managed to go beyond the forest. No matter how long they journeyed for, it was futile. It was said that once a mighty king decided to go beyond the forest, and ventured there with an army of elite soldiers. They ventured for more than two years, but in these two years, most of the soldiers were wiped out by the fierce beasts living inside the forest. According to the soldiers who went with the king, after they had crossed a hundred thousand miles deep into the forest, they found creatures more fearsome than the beasts. There were otherworldly creatures and unknown beings that killed the most elite soldiers of the army. Finally, when the king returned from his adventure, he declared that the forest was 'Uncrossable'. From that point on, the forest had the name 'Uncrossable'. Due to the existence of the forest, very few people dared to live in this village. Those who lived in this village lived here either due to the sentiment towards their ancestral land or simply because they were too poor to relocate.

It was nighttime. Stars were shining brightly, and a bright moon hung above the head. Moonlight was drowning the whole village like a magical ocean. Many of the villagers were asleep, while some were eating dinner in a hurry, as no one dared to stay awake late in the night in this village. Only a lone person in the village wasn't home this late at night. This person was a bit different then everyone else. He had no fear of trivial things and did whatever he liked to do. Right now, this person was doing something inside the Uncrossable Forest.

"Chop! Chop! Chop!"

Sounds of someone chopping wood echoed in the air. Under the bright moonlight, a young sturdy figure was chopping wood. It seemed that he had just chopped down a large branch of a tree, and at the moment, he was chopping it into smaller pieces, creating firewood.

"This will be enough to cook food for quite a few days. Damn, to think I forgot to chop woods in the afternoon. I'm feeling sleepy already. I need to go and cook dinner and get to sleep. I'm supposed to go to the town market to sell the vegetables tomorrow. If I wake up late, I'll lose out on the sale. Morning is the best time to sell fresh vegetables. I can't be late.", the figure said to itself.

It was a young boy. He wore short pants and an old, worn-out green shirt with the name 'Edward' sewn in. Seemed like this was his name.

He gathered all the chopped wood and put them inside a large bag. With the bag on his back, he started walking towards the village.

As he looked towards the village, he breathed in a deep breath, smelling the flowers in the fields beside the pathway. There were many kinds of flowers there, with tulip being the most common. Maybe that's why someone named this village 'Tulip'. Every time someone looked at those fields, it would remind them of the name of the village.

As he started walking, he felt a cold wind on his back. He didn't think too much at first, but soon, it felt unusually cold. It seemed a cold air was coming from the forest. He turned around.

He didn't see anything at first, but after hearing some noise, he looked above. It was the moment of truth. At that moment, the sight that he saw, he can never forget in his entire life.

He saw a white silhouette. It was a girl wearing a white dress. She was running on the air, like a dancing celestial fairy, and behind her, several ominous dark shadows were in the chase, like demons from myths. They were also flying in the air. Under the bright moonlight, the entire scenario was like a scene from a fairy tale. Edward kept staring, with his mouth wide open.

Suddenly, a shadow at the front threw a glowing ball of darkness towards the girl, and the girl emitted a blue light at the same time. The light touched those shadows and turned them into ice statues, and soon they crumbled. Nothing was left of them.

The girl was also hit by the black ball. After she was hit, she coughed a mouthful of blood and fell from the sky.

Edward was speechless and did not know what to do. From what he just saw, it seemed like they were immortals with powerful martial cultivation like he used to read in stories. But he never thought it was possibly true that martial arts cultivation could take someone to that level of power. At least, he never heard of anyone in the Green Veil country, or in the surrounding countries who had such powers. There were martial artists in a vast number, but all of them were mortal cultivators with limited powers. To think he would see immortals with such magical powers was unbelievable to him, even after what he just witnessed.

"What should I do? Should I just ignore and go home? Or should I go and check?", he started pondering.

He slowly started walking towards the place where the girl fell. He knew that if everything went right, this could be the turning point in his life, and he could discover a whole new world. His steps were slow but heavy. These steps were currently the most important steps in his life, a turning point.

When he finally reached the place, he saw piles of snow here and there, and the area was very cold. Walking forward a little more, he reached the location where the girl fell. He saw traces of blood on a certain pile of snow.

"It's here", he said to himself. He soon removed the pile of snow. His hands were freezing but he still forced himself to do it. Finally, he saw a girl in a beautiful blue-ish white dress with patterns of magical fish embroidered upon it. The dress was somehow magically absorbing the moonlight and glowing like fireflies. Looking upon the face of the girl, he was shocked. He was shocked because he has never ever seen such a beautiful girl before, not even in his dreams!

"Such beautiful hair!", he thought. The girl had bluish-white hair. It was the same color as her dress. Her hair was smooth and silky, and very light, like magical threads.

He was also shocked because the girl didn't seem to be older than him! Such a young and delicate girl of 16-17 years old is actually an immortal with godlike powers! Unbelievable!

He carried the girl on his shoulders and started walking towards the village. He didn't have much difficulty carrying her as he had a strong body due to him being someone who is used to doing heavy physical tasks on a daily basis.

After arriving home, He put the girl on a floor mat made of straw, as he didn't have any bed. He couldn't afford such furniture. He had a stool to sit on, though. He made it himself by using the bark of a tree he chopped.

He didn't have any medicine, but he knew a few things about herbs. Using a few herbs to make medicine, he treated the wounds of the girl and stopped the bleeding. What he found amazing was that the girl seemed to be recovering on her own.

"Is it due to the wondrous powers Immortals have?", he wondered.

Finally, after a whole day, the girl woke up. Soon, she sat up from her lying position and started to look around. Then she looked at Edward.

"Where am I? And who are you?", she asked.
