Chapter 19 – Duality
He was alive, which was great and all, but he was in the hands of the enemy, so still looked at his fate through a gloom. Not only that, the unpredictable nature of JD turned from amusing to terrorizing, now that he knew what he was capable of. It wasn’t the same fear he had before, though. It was a dull kind of fear – like he knew he should be scared, but was too tired to care.
His vanished legs were slowly being reformed. He saw the exposed blood vessels form and muscle grow from his thighs. Magic was the basis of everything here. Who needed doctors or nurses? Just get yourself a crazed duck.
‘W-Where am I?’ Kuno asked. ‘Where are we going?’
The rabbitmen turned to JD for the answers. After stabilizing Kuno, they went back to the camp to retreat their stuff, and then got a call from the base camp. A party of Regnum was clearing out the outer camps up north, and they were told to return. The trip would encompass at least five days, but the hard part was Kuno. If JD told the Empire they had captured the second Shitman, they would get a deluxe express-summoning by teleportation. But for some reason, he didn’t speak… neither to the rabbitmen, nor the Empire.
‘We’re going northeast, to our base camp,’ Chompy said, with Hopper continuing: ‘your comrades have been attacking our camps up north. We’re retreating to stop them.’
The rain had stopped already, but although the rabbitmen walked through the softened earth, leaving marks as they went, the mud rose to fill the dents, leaving no trail whatsoever. Although the forest belonged to them, it wasn’t like it abided by their will. Any wonders Kuno had, he filled in with JD. Except for one:
‘What are you? What kind of being are you…JD?’
JD didn’t respond, causing the rabbitmen to feel tense and answer him instead, before things got out of hand again. ‘H-He’s one of the Five Pillars of the Empire,’ Chompy said. ‘He owns one of the legendary weapons of Soji…’
‘What’s that, a Pillar? And I’m not talking about the tall vertical structure of stone, wood, or metal, used as a support for a building, or as an ornament or monument™.’ Kuno said.
After making it out alive, one would think Kuno would be scared to speak so freely, but Kuno couldn’t feel freer. He had already accepted dying, and still had to process he hadn’t.

‘The Five Pillars are the strongest people in the Soji Empire,’ Hopper said.
‘Alright…’ Kuno said. ‘Simple. So what the fuck is he doing here? Why would he be here?’ he began getting pissed at his luck, totally glossing over the fact that he had fought one of the strongest enemies he could’ve faced. ‘Are you kidding me…’ he thought. ‘One step into the enemy zone and I find this motherfucker!?’
‘H-He…’ Chompy said. ‘He-uhh…’ he didn’t feel comfortable talking about JD with him being here, but JD was so zoned out, it didn’t even matter what they said as long as it was not about geese. He still faced forward with an empty look on his face. He could either be lost in his thoughts or drifting through his empty mind. Either way, someone had to answer these questions.
‘The captain likes to do what he wants… which isn’t something the Emperor likes. That’s why he can only go on small trips… far from the capital,’ Hopper said. ‘He had a traumatic experience on the battlefield… and hasn’t been the same since.’
‘Red,’ JD suddenly said, drawing all eyes in. ‘JD saw red, but JD didn’t like red.’
An awkward silence befell the group. Only Kuno mustered the courage to ask: ‘What do you mean, you saw red?’
‘QUAHAHA!’ he laughed, startling the rabbitmen. ‘All red. Wife red, daughter red, grass red, trees red, all red. Only JD not red,’ he said, turning around. Kuno looked him deep in the dark eyes. He didn’t know what it was, but JD’s eyes missed something. They didn’t feel like spheres in a man’s skull, but rather like holes. ‘Empty…’ he thought. ‘The anger I saw earlier is gone… It just an abyss… this guy’s running on autopilot…’
JD put his finger on his temple. ‘But JD is smart,’ he said. ‘If family red, JD turns red too,’ he turned back again, like he just said something mind blowing.
‘His family died in the fall of Akakuni… When the reinforcements found him, he was swimming in the blood of the fallen, having become the man you see here today.’
He didn’t know how to respond to that. ‘A war veteran who has lost his mind… I must’ve triggered him…’
After half a minute of silence, Kuno asked the rabbitmen: ‘why did you guys save me anyway…’
Everyone but JD smiled at Kuno as Chompy dug into his jacket. He pulled out something and showed Kuno. ‘You dropped this,’ he said. It was a match. ‘You could’ve killed us, couldn’t you? But you didn’t…’

The contrast between the rabbitmen and JD was so extreme, Kuno began to laugh. ‘So, you guys decided to save me because I let you live? I-I was too weak to do it… but that doesn’t mean I stopped seeing you guys as the enemy.’
‘We know,’ Hopper said. ‘But none of your peers ever think twice about killing us… Let alone spare us.’
Kuno could imagine Regnum to be like that, and thinking back to the first quest, understood that even good people still mercilessly killed these animal-people, like they had a switch they could turn to make the voices stop. Maybe he still had to harden like them… but the rabbitmen wanted to take that chance. ‘The villagers of Vermillion village weren’t harmed at all…’ Kuno thought. ‘Would the same be true if we were the attackers?’
Kuno just wanted to level, sadly not completely grasping the consequences of the violence that was needed to achieve that. Among the 26 people here, probably only JD understood that perfectly.
‘Would you spare me if I wasn’t the new Shitman…?’ he asked, almost certain about the answer. A lot of things would be different if he weren’t the intestines user.
‘You carry a great privilege, Kuno,’ JD said, his tone turned stern.
Kuno clenched his jaw, swallowing the saliva in his mouth as the rabbitmen got another surge of chills.
‘You’re a double-edged sword…’ JD said. ‘Killing or not killing - both are correct ways to deal with you…’ he gave a sigh. ‘Quah… We actually thought a lot about what we had to do if we found another Shitman on Soji grounds.’
He turned around to look Kuno in the eyes. Kuno didn’t want to see his face right now, but couldn’t look away for some reason. His golden beak, white feathers, the bland look on his face, they were the same but still felt different. The newly made memories had changed everything.
‘The first option was to kill you as soon as possible,’ JD said. ‘The second… was to send you back…’
Kuno’s mind felt numb, but the rabbitmen reacted for him. ‘What!? What do you mean send him back. We need him to fight for us! We need to send him to the capital,’ Hopper said.
‘That’s what the Emperor would want me to do…’ JD said. ‘But JD listens to someone else!’
The rabbitmen widened their eyes, quickly looking over their shoulder to see if anyone heard these dangerous words. ‘Are you insane, captain!?’ Chompy said, already knowing he had a couple screws loose, but never imagining this many. ‘What if he grows just as strong as the Shitman and attacks us!? That’ll be the end of the Empire!’
JD didn’t face Kuno, but still asked: ‘will you destroy the Soji Empire, Kuno?’
‘I-…’ Kuno didn’t know what to say to this behemoth of a question. ‘I…’ the rabbitmen looked at him with glassy eyes, begging without words. ‘I don’t know… I don’t want to be here. This is way too much for me--- You know what, no it isn’t! I don’t want to destroy the Soji Empire, but I don’t want to destroy the Kingdom of Regnum either! I just want to end this war peacefully and go home!’
His left leg had completely returned as he still floated in the sphere.
One – two – three seconds passed and everyone burst out in laughter, JD especially: ‘QUAHAHAHA!’
‘W-What? Why are you guys laughing!?’ Kuno said, but it would take a while for them to finish.
‘JD’s glad he didn’t squish you like little banana pie on the kitchen floor!’ JD said.
‘What the fuck… Who would anyone leave a pie on the floor? You know what? Why am I even questioning the words of this guy?’ Kuno thought.
‘You’re laughing at me because I’m ridiculous, right? I know this bit, you think; ‘haha, this guy thinks he can end the war. Who does he think he is?’’
They wiped their teary eyes, some still laughing. ‘These are tears of joy, Kuno,’ Chompy said. ‘You repeated the words of the Shitman word for word, literally!’
He tilted his neck forward. ‘Wait, what!?’ he said. ‘Why would you have tears of joy? I thought he was a super strong soldier of Regnum who almost destroyed your empire or something…’
‘QUAHAHAHA!’ JD laughed.
‘Destroy our empire?’ Hopper said with a smile.
‘Kuno, he saved it! The Shitman is one of the Five Pillars. He’s the Hero of Soji!’

Godfather Of Champions
This is a story about the pursuit of victory.— «I subscribe only to the theory of victory. I only pursue victory. As long as I am able to obtain victory, I don’t care if it’s total football or counterattack. What is the ultimate goal of professional soccer? In my opinion, it is victory, and the pinnacle of victory is to become the champions. I am a manager. If I don’t wish to lose my job or be forgotten by the people, there’s only one path for me to take, and that is to lead the team in obtaining victories, in obtaining championship titles!»The main character was not well-liked by people.— «⋯We conducted a survey which had been deemed by Manager Tony Twain as extremely meaningless. In a random street survey conducted, ninety-three percent of those surveyed chose the option ‘I hate Tony Twain’, while only seven percent chose the option ‘This person is rather decent, I like him’. It is worth noting that nobody chose the option ‘Who is Tony Twain? I don’t know him’. Mark, do you know why Manager Twain felt that our survey was very meaningless?» Parker, a reporter from laughed loudly and said when he was being interviewed by BBC.But there were also people who were madly in love with him.— When Tony Twain was forced to talk about the survey conducted by during an interview, his reply was : «I am happy, because Nottingham Forest’s fans make up seven percent of England’s population.»And he did not seem to care about how the others saw him.— «What are you all trying to make me say? Admit that I am not popular, and everywhere I go will be filled with jeers and middle fingers. You all think I will be afraid? Wrong! Because I am able to bring victory to my team and its supporters. I don’t care how many people hate me and can’t wait to kill me, and I also won’t change myself to accommodate the mood of these losers. You want to improve your mood? Very simple, come and defeat me.»His love story had garnered widespread attention.— «Our reporters took these pictures at Manager Tony Twain’s doorsteps. It clearly shows that Shania entered his house at 8.34pm and she did not leave the house throughout the night at all. But Manager Tony Twain firmly denies, and insists that that was merely the newest-model inflatable doll which he had ordered. He was the number one star of the team.— «⋯ Became the spokesperson of world-wide famous clothing brands, shot advertisements, frequented the fashion industry’s award ceremonies, endorsed electronic games, has a supermodel girlfriend. His earnings from advertisements exceed his club salary by seventeen times, owns a special column in various print medias, publishing his autobiography (in progress), and is even said that he is planning to shoot an inspirational film based off his own person experiences! Who can tell me which part of his life experiences is worthy of being called ‘inspirational’? Hold on⋯. Are you all thinking that I’m referring to David Beckham? You’re sorely mistaken! I’m talking about Manager Tony Twain⋯.»He was very knowledgeable about Chinese soccer.— «⋯ I’ve heard about it, that Bora gifted four books to his manager Mr. Zhu before your country’s national team’s warm up match. After which, the team lost 1:3 to a nameless American team from Major League Soccer. The new excuse that Mr. Zhu gave for losing the match, was that Bora gifted «books» (‘books’ and ‘lose’ are homophones in the Chinese language). Here, I recommend that you guys find out what that one specific book is. Which book? Of course the one that caused you all to score a goal. After that, tell me the title of the book. Before every match, I will gift ten copies of that same book to you. In that case, won’t you all be able to get a triumphant 10:0 win over your opponents every time?» An excerpt taken from Tony Twain’s special column in a certain famous Chinese sports newspaper. He was loved and hated by the press.— «He has a special column in at least four renowned print media, and he is able to get a considerable amount of remuneration just by scolding people or writing a few hundred words of nonsense weekly. While we have to contemplate hard about our drafts for three days before our boss is pleased with it. In an article inside his special column, he scolded and called all of the media ‘son of a bitch’, announcing that he hated the media the most. But every time he publishes an article, we flock towards him like flies which had spotted butter. Why? Because the readers like to read his news and see him scold people. I dare to bet with you, and Manager Tony Twain knows clearly in his heart as well, that even though he says that he hates us, he knows that the present him cannot do without us. Similarly, we also cannot do without him. Is this ultimately considered a good or a bad thing?» Bruce Pearce, a reporter from said with a face of helplessness when talking about Tony Twain. But no matter the case, his players were his most loyal believers.— Gareth Bale, «No no, we never had any pressure when playing on our home grounds. Because the pressure is all on the manager. As long as we see him standing by the side of the field, all of us will feel that we will be able to win that match. Even the football hooligans are like meek lambs in front of him!» (After saying this, he began to laugh out loudly)The reply from George Wood, the team captain of Nottingham Forest, was the most straightforward. «We follow him because he can bring us victory.»The legendary experience of Tony Twain, the richest, most successful, most controversial manager with the most unique personality!Debuting this summer.Thank you for reading.

The Dreamside Road
Five years after the world fell into chaos, a treasure of artifacts is up for grabs. The relics of the Dreamside Road offer a power that could help rebuild or annihilate what remains. Orson Gregory is an adventurer for hire, but hunts this treasure for answers, not glory. Enoa Cloud’s late aunt helped hide the Dreamside Road, but following in her aunt’s supernatural tradition offers her as much peril as power. Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.

Lawman.
Lawman follows the exploits of Relovan, a Human Police Enforcer stationed on the BlargonianPlanets – a series of small planets on which pure Essence is mined, and refined into fuel. On hisday off, he finds himself and his fellow Enforcers caught up in a fight between two Void Lords, beings of immense power, who answer only to the Council, after the pair of Void Lords touchdown on the Station, seeking to refuel their respective Void Walkers. In the ensuing clash,Relovan punches above his weight and subdues a number of Void Knights – those in the serviceof the Void Lords – before becoming directly involved in the confrontation between the VoidLords themselves. His performance during the incident catches the attention of the current PoliceChief, Nura, who essentially takes him under his wing, and assists him in various ways, including when he is summoned to answer before the Council for getting involved in the spatbetween the two Void Lords. The book ends after the conclusion of the Hearing.Relovan is a stickler for the Law – something that prompted him to learn not only the laws ofvarious territories and planetary systems, but also the native languages and customs, so as touphold the law as best he can. As a highly trained, and immensely skilled former soldier,Relovan’s abilities along with his latent talent regarding the use of Essence, allow him to hangwith beings infinitely more powerful than him. Lawman is a full length manuscript that I will likely self publish once I have the artwork for it.
