《Slime migration》Chapter 4: First night

Kip didn’t need to think. Same as before, he climbed up quickly on a nearby tree.
It's almost funny to the point of laughing outloud how quickly he reacted to dange and what method he used to saefly retreat. He wonders why he hasn’t gotten a skill called climb yet. It probably wasn’t easy to get one.
Keeping absolutely still, he glanced down at the source of the noise. Two shadows walked out of a bush. He almost thought it was a his school mates, since they were walking on 2 legs, and looking vaguely human in the dark. But the sound the two was making made his hair stand up on its end. Under the moon, the humanoid monsters' appearances looked very much like that of a goblin, or what he assumed goblin to look like. They were both about 1.2 metres tall, with arms longer than legs, and attached claws so sharp that they refllected the moonlight like that of a mirror.
With a naturally curved mouth full of razor sharp teeths, a crooked nose, long pointed ear, and an eye each. Their ugly appearances and facial expressions could only be describe as mischivous and dreadfyl. “Wait a minute, one eye! I thought they was goblin, so they turned out to be a cyclopes after all. But why are they so small?” Kip pondered. It appeared the two monsters were looking for something. They glanced all around, seemingly sniffing at the air. Sniffing, wait, that’s not good, are they looking for him?. Kip was prepared to fight; it would be troublesome if there exist monsters that can track him back to the cave. The bald cyclops (that was how Kip differentiated between them) grunted in anoyance. It seemed that human trails end right here. Not only did it miss it's prey, but also ran into another soildier of the tribe the bald cyclops thought.
The hairy cyclops was also angry, it wanted to capture a human all by it self and having a tasty treat. It didn't want to share. A series of grunts and snorts echoes in he silence night, the two cyclopes were no longer bickering now. They looked at each other with absolute hatred in their eyes.
The one hairy cyclops was waving its hands around, and it drew blood by accident. The bald cyclops already ugly face was getting uglier than the minute. They started fighting all by them self without him doing anything. Kip was in ecstasy. The fight was short extremely short, lasting for only 5 minute. Yet Kip was absolutely amazed. It was one of the most intense fight he had ever seen in his life/
The cyclopes attacked and clawed at each other with inhumane speed, dodging blows after blows and doing the samething to their opponents. Although it was dark, their moment was a blur. Not only that, they seemed to be very crafty, aiming at vital point such as the eyes, heart and such. "Such a savage style of fighting. Completely ignoring defense, the Cyclopes fight wasn't an exchange of skills, but a dance of dead!

Fighting to kill, this was the first time Kip seen something like that. Both monsters are now lying on the floor, blood dripping out of their chest and faces. The bald goblin was lying still however, with a line across its neck. The other, although not looking any better, is at least still alive. It crawled to its friend corpse, and started eating. Kip face was making a disgusted expression; he knew there was something wrong with these two since they started fighting over the smallest thing; turn out the cyclops are cannibals.
He couldn’t waste this chance, sliding down and avoided making as little noise as possible. Kip picked up a sturdy nearby branch. Hearing a different sound, the cyclops turned to his direction. Kip heart was beating really fast now. He holds the branch up and pointed it toward the cyclops in an attacking stance. 1 minute passed, but the cyclops still was still rooted in the same place
“Why is it not coming at me? Is it's injuries really that bad?” he thought. It was then he noticed, the cyclops was bleeding out of it eye, and was trying to locate him by sniffing around. Kip thought of a plan. “Trying to find me using scent huh, I’ll make sure it’s the last thing you ever smell”. He threw a bunch of dirt and fallen leafs from the grounds toward the cyclops. This seemed to aggravate it and make it swing at random. Deadly swings came out one after another but all was hitting nothing but air.
In the meantime, Kip tied one end of the rope to a tree. After making sure it’s secured, he slides across the ground, tripping the cyclops with it’s with the rope. The creature fell on its face, hard, groaning and grunting in pain. But he wasn’t going to let it rest just yet! With one resolute step, he crushed the cyclops head into mush. The feeling was unpleasant, but this could be him if he ever shows mercy to those monster. He heard a buzz on his ear

Kip sat down exhausted, dirty and tired. He couldn’t relax just yet, more of those creatures’ friends might be coming. But this will do for now. It was his first monster kill after all. Bloody and savage, nothing like an RPG game, more like a nightmare. He stood up on his feet again, untie the rope from the tree, and proceed to search for loots, if there is any.
Rolling the corpse over, he got a clear look at the creatures. Even in death they still look terrifying. Since the cyclops fought with their claw, he couldn’t find any weapon. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t carry anything else with them. On each cyclops hung a large pouch. Inside the first one was a small ring and some strong smelling herb, he was quite happy with this find. He thought he couldn’t identify the ring since he doesn’t have the skill, but that doesn’t mean he has no way of knowing what it does. By putting it on and checking his stat, he might be able to figure what it’s for.

For the second pouch, Kip was quite disappointed. It seems this cyclops like to pack its food when its go out; as expected from a cannibal, there’s only a piece of meat inside. Since he doesn’t know what creature the meat is from, he didn’t dare to eat it; but he collects it anyway, maybe he could use it as a lure. There was nothing else to loot really, Kip didn’t want to take the dirty rag on the goblin body. Speaking of rags, that strap on its hand seem kind of new. He pries the strap from the dead body, surprisingly, its stretchy and elastic like rubber. He could definitely use this. He drags their body close to a tree, and cover it with dead leafs, just as a precaution of course.
Satisfied with his work, he took a drink from his water bottle. All the fight made him exhausted and hungry, but he didn’t want to take food in front of Raven. That means that he couldn’t trust her. The true is, this was exactly the situation. Raven seemed to be a nice girl, but no one could completely see through a person on their first meeting. Only time will tell.
Walking toward the slime area again, he realised he had a big problem. The cyclops seemed to be able to smell him, How did this happen?. How do they know what human smelled like in the first place? Could it be coincidental? He couldn’t take a risk, no matter how small it is. He needed something to mask his smell. Remembering the strong herbs in the pouch he had before, he took one out, and cautiously rub it on his exposed arm and neck. He knew it wasn’t poisonous, since this was what the two goblin smelled like.
What Kip didn’t know was that this small precaution has saved his life. The cyclopes he fought was nocturnal creatures, coming out at night to hunt. They have poor eyesight, but an excellent sense of hearing and smell. They relied heavily on their sense of smell to find their target. They are familiar with most of the smell in this area, since this was their hunting territory. That was why the human sudden appearance results in him being target as a prey. By rubbing the herb on himself, he had masked his human smell, thus avoided meeting other cyclops. Cyclops often hunt by them self, going together conflicts with their keen sense of smell, which were the result of the fight Kip has witnessed before. As for Raven, she is safe as long as she doesn’t travel out of the cave. The water from the stream naturally washed all scent clean after all.
Arriving at the slime den, Kip wanted on a tree nearby, tied the rope around himself, and slowly drip to sleep.
Raven awoke in the middle of the night; her ankle feels a lot better now. But she still avoided moving around too much. Kip had shown his trust in her by telling her everything and leaving his supply behind while he ventured into the night, she couldn’t just sit around doing nothing.
After washing her face and drinking water from the stream, she peaked her head outside its entrance, getting a bit wet in the process. The forest looked even more scary at night, she saw shadows drinking from the stream, they looked almost humane, but she knew they were something else. No human makes that much grunting noise when they drink. Quietly sneaking back in the cave, she started working on the skill Kip told her about, after a few hundred rocks later, she still couldn’t get the skill observance.
“Am I doing something wrong?" she thought, and gave up on trying to obtain 'observance'as a skill. No point dwelling on it if it doesn’t work. She could always ask him when he get back. Speaking of Kip, he had been out for a while now. She silently pray that he’s okay. An unslightly noise was coming out of her stomach then, she hasn't eaten any solid food since yesterday family dinner.
Munching on some chocolate before sitting down in a corner of the cave. She felt lonely in the dark. She wondered how parents were doing. “Everything happen for a reason they say, what about something like this then” laughing gently, she picks up a rock and throw it across the wall. Seeing that doing this help her mood, she started throwing a few more, aiming at an imaginary target that only she would know. When suddenly

Raven was feeling ecstatic. She has finally gotten a skill, can’t wait to tell Kip about it. In her rush of joys, she started throwing a lot more rocks. This last a while until her body couldn’t handle it anymore, and she fell to a deep slumber.

Ghostified City
‘Ghostified City’ is a post-dystopian sci-fi tale, set in a fading world that might be a future version of ours, running out on autopilot into oblivion. Adaman Yimmand is a simple robofactory operator in The City who's working with robots and machines every day. He doesn’t even realise that he might not have met another actual human being in years. Everything begins when he breaks his routine for once and enters a bar where he meets Evelith. This pesky other person does not let him go after he has had his -rather terrible- beer, because according to her actual humans are much rarer than he’s aware of. And from then on ‘the genie is out of the bottle and won’t get back in’, to use her words: Adaman meets more people, and gradually he has no choice but to accept that the reality of The City is not what he always thought it was, and to face the darkness of a fading humanity on the brink of self-inflicted extinction. Is there any hope left for him, and for his species? I have selected 'sexual content' and 'traumatising content' to be on the safe side, because there is a stripclub-like venue in the background of the story, and an almost-extinct humanity that has institutionalised suicide which might be disturbing to some. Apart from that it's not really a heavy 'adult' story.('Ghostified City' is my first long story in English as opposed to my native language Dutch, and an earlier version was published on my fiction blog 'Oranderra' until I stopped updating. This is a slightly altered version of the first series.)
