《Re:Spider》A Good Photo

´well than, imma just Mimic again...´ i once again felt drowsy, and when i awoke, i had morphed again. ´man, ive gotta say, its muuuuch easier walking around in this form...´ i was just about to climt the tree Georgio was sleeping by when i heard a rustle. ´huh? is something there?´ i climbed up the tree and hid on a brach. my head was poking out, but i could not be seen easily.
"what in the..." a man. out of the bushes came a man dressed in camoflage. had he not made a sound or moved, i would have never seen him. he had dark brown hair and he had a large backpack on his back. he had a dark green hat with fake leaves on him. his green eyes darted around, serching for something. for whatever reason, he did not care about Georgio.
he stepped out of the bushes and walked up to Georgio. or i should say, he tip-toed up to him. thankfully, he didnt wake him up nor steal his stuff. i sighed in relief. ´pah, had Georgio woken up, i would have a hard time explaining...´ of course, i didnt move. but even though he went up to Georgio, he did not touch the tree in the least. in fact, at all times he was loocking up at the tree, checking out the braches one by one.
when he had finnished up whatever he was doing to Georgio, he immidietly stepped out from under the tree. for a second, he turned his gaze to his waist. there hung a large green bag. he opened it up by the zipper, and pulled out a giant camera. he sat down his backpack, and took off a cylindical bag on the side of it. inside it was stand, which he sttached the camera to. he then took a stance behind it, looking very concentrated.

´huh? whats he doing...?´ i inched a little further out of the tree, and in that moment, "snap" a light flashed. i immidietly stopped. the camera he held made a noice, and he happily grinned. "yes, come on out..." ´wait, is he talking to me??` i stood completely still, my claws digging deep into the wood. ´oh shit oh shit oh shit, what if he took a picture of me? wouldnt i be dead??´ i shivered slightly, causing the leaves around me to rustle.
the mans camera was not completely focused on me. the light had started shining, but a snap could still not be heard. ´...´ after about ten seconds, "snap". at the second he was distracted slightly, i pulled in my head. he apperenly noticed this and said "Shit". i stayed in the tree, on the same branch, but i layed down. i was starting to feel drowsy. ´o-oh shit, just lemme find a good sleeping place...´ i laid myself down on a few fused braches, big and strong enugh to hold my wight.
i then fell into a deep sleep.
when i awoke, the cameraman was gone, and it was morning. Georgio was looking around the place, probobly serching for me. i reeled myself down from the branch and shuffled up to Georgio. he sighed as he crouched before me. "hey, where were you all night? ive geen serching for ten minutes!" ´uh, well, ive been hiding from a camera dude up in a branch´.
´uh dude, can i sit on your shoulder or something? its hard for me to walk without using my Jaguar form...´ i pointed at his shoulder with my hand, and he looked behind his back. "what? is there something behind me?..." i waved my hand as i once again pointed at his shoulder. now he looked at his shoulder, and he shuttered a little. "dude... you cant mean..." ´yes, i want to sit on your shoulder!´ i bobbed my head up and down, in a movement similar to nodding.

"ugh, if you wanted me dead, i guess you wouldnt have helped me kill the jaguar..." he held out his hand in fron of me, and i happily stepped up on it. but before he did anything, i excitedly climbed up to his shoulder. as i saw his face, i was sure that if i did even the tinyest of movements, he would scream. i sat down and held on with my legs. i let two of my arms just hang, just in case.
Georgio put on his backpack, and i sat myslef down on the straps of the backpack. that was easier on Georgio, since i was no longer touching him. we started walking, and i could swear i heard something following us. but i wasent sure since there were so many other sounds around us. we were walking on a trail, and on the way, Georgio was making small talk with me. of course, i couldnt answer, but i did some sort of sigh language as communication.
after awhile of walking, the rusteling passed us. apperently, Georgio had noticed it as well. soon after, the cameraman jumped out of the bushes. ´whoa, Deja Vu´ "stop!" Georgio stopped at the shout, and i could clearly see that he was confused as hell. "what is that spider on your shoulder?!" he shouted. ´uhhh, according to my status, im a Nephilia Clavier Orca Mime´ "i-i dunno? who are you anyways?" the cameraman shook his head as he seemed to calm down. "ehem, sorry, i am Phil. im a spider photographer." "oh, uh, im George. and this spider? well, i dont know. its as intelligent as a human, and its huge. thats about all i know about it." ´hey! im not an "it"!´ Phil looked over at me as i waved my leg at him. he jumped back as he got surprised.
"as smart as a human you say?... hm, it looks like some sort of Nephila, but its too big, and those patterns... also, what the hell happened to his third pair of legs?" Georgio shrugged as he said "i dont know. yesterday, he saved my life, but right after he killed the beast, he fell over. i put him in a jar, but when i sat down for the night, he had grown huge and he had changed into this... thing..." he looked at me, and then back at Phil. Phil looked at me, then back to Georgio. i looked at Georgio, and then to Phil.
´welp... this is awkward..."

The friends found themselves home in the real world, exactly as they'd been the night they were taken, as if no time had passed... except only three came back. Hi there! This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time. NOVA INTERIT.US
It's 2063, and the town along with much of the nation are in disarray. The decay started years before the Great Event. Our town still had hope thanks to the five families, who'd created a blockchain based water distribution system for the locals, a valuable secret hidden from the Global Water Commission and their network of mercenaries. Earlier in the mid-2040's, right after the state secessions of Idaho, Montana, and Texas, the Global Council of Water Commissioners made their deals and moved into towns throughout the country. They called it "the integration." The Commission and their contractors integrated with municipal water departments, using their organized network to invade like parasites on local services. It all coincided with the 29th Amendment to the United States Constitution, later referred to as the Regional Trident Plan. Nova is a story about survival, power structures, the turning of relationships, and the networking between people and the systems to which they belong. It’s about A.I. blockchain possibility, and its potential for human betterment versus our detriment. It’s about the question of whether or not we need to be saved from ourselves, and by who or what? The Great Event at the end of the first chapter might just be what actually saves us. The epilogue will take place in 2517. This scene is fully sketched and the full arc of the novel is set. I expect to finish Nova Interitus by summer of 2023. This is realist hard-sci-fi dystopian fiction. I hope you find Nova to be a challenging and consuming story. This is not something I planned to write. It all came to me in a dream and I haven't been able to stop writing it. This Royal Road posting is basically a beta test with chapters and drafts to get some feedback and see if there's any readership for this narrative. For the full experience read Nova on Substack. I will be narrating a podcast version later this year there. https://novainteritus.substack.com/
