《Forsaking Reality》Chapter 41: Intent of Lord Dullahan

Beads of sweat formed on Akata’s body causing his robe to be soaked. The World Omen of Lord Dullahan contained too much information, which all poured into his mind. And the intent was too great for Akata’s weak cultivation base, filling it up to the point of it overflooding. His vision darkened and his body was trembling all over, but he held on and grit his teeth.
Blood oozed from Akata’s eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. The intent washed over his whole body, remolding it in a way. This was something most techniques wouldn’t do, only truly powerful techniques would attempt this. Yet, this was only a copy of a simplified version. It wasn’t even the whole complete thing yet it was so powerful!
Akata’s body was trembling and started to glow with a black light. The black glow spread all over his body with a prickling sensation. It was slightly painful but Akata could bear it easily. The weird part was that the glow only seemed to cover his skin, and as it did his skin turned black.
But then the glow spread deeper into his body to reach his muscles. The pain increased dramatically and Akata’s muscles convulsed greatly. His face distorted from the sudden increase in pain but he didn’t make a sound and clenched his teeth together. It felt like his muscles and skin were constantly tearing apart yet being rebuilt at the same time. It was a horrifying feeling of constant pain.
If it stopped there then Akata could deal with it but then the glow went deeper into his body to reach his organs. His heart, his lungs, his brain, all of that was being covered in the black glow and was experiencing an unbearable stabbing pain.
Akata finally let out a long blood curdling howl as this new wave of pain came. “AAAHHHH!!” His organs were being completely crushed, his muscles were constantly being torn apart, and his skin was slowly eroding away with a stabbing sensation. Yet all of that repeated because even as they were feeling that they would quickly recover and begin the cycle again.
The black glow was mysterious as it even spread to Akata's mind and corroded his mental energy. His mental energy crashed as the black glow battered against it. It was a horrendous stabbing pain. Yet the glow didn't stop at mental energy as it attacked his nature energy and another type of energy Akata ducky know anything about. All of that was attacked and experienced a stabbing sensation causing great pain to Akata's mind.
It made for a terrifying level of pain that one wouldn’t willingly go through no matter what. But even still it didn’t stop there, that was because the black glow started to cover over Akata’s soul and cultivation region. The glow battered against the two spaces and soon overpowered the two. It flooded in with a feeling of extermination and also rebirth.

The level of pain jumped to new heights as Akata’s soul and cultivation region was washed over. Everything inside of his cultivation region was destroyed and reformed completely over and over again. His meridians which serve to move the energy of the body were torn, destroyed, and crushed repeatedly until they regrew where the process would start again. Each time they grew back they would be a bit bigger. His cultivation base was burning and was being stabbed countless amounts of time strengthening it up.
In the soul region the black glow spread far and wide. It attacked the soul until the all white soul was now pitch black. It caused Akata’s body to wither greatly to the point he looked just like bones. His whole body was on fire from his organs, to his muscles, to his skin, everything was on fire yet it was being remade and quickly recovered only to be destroyed again.
The black glow spread out further until it reached the runes in his soul region. The black glow inundated them but the red rune spun around and pushed it back with no problem. The pushing force was so great the black glow couldn’t even touch the gold rune.
After the black glow stopped attempting to try and spread into the runes, the pain in Akata’s body slowly decreased. Akata’s bony body was trembling from the pain, cracks could be seen on his bones and parts of him was still dark in color. Akata’s figure was completely skeletal-like.
As the last bit of the black glow faded away a boom could be heard from Akata’s skeletal body. All of a sudden a huge black light shone around him and brought an intense suction force with it. The whole area seemed moved by it as life from all the surrounding things moved towards it. The life energy of the air, water, trees, grass, and everything moved in the direction of Akata and infused within him.
His bones quickly healed up, his muscles formed back onto them, and his skin was repaired lightning fast. But even after his body was completely healed up the life energy didn’t stop. It kept sucking in more and filled up his cultivation and soul region. His soul was pitch black once the life energy started to fill it up the soul grew in size.
The soul kept on growing and growing until it was two times its original size. Then the blackness shed off of it revealing a lustrous white glow. The runes also received life energy which caused them to rotate and glow even more exuberant than before.
His whole body grew to a new level of strength. His soul, his cultivation, his mind, all of that leapt by leaps and bounds to a whole different stage.

“I didn’t think this technique would be so painful. But with great power there has to be consequences one has to go through. Now that I've gone through all of that my body feels like it's on a completely different level than before.”
“This technique is way too profound, I can’t even fathom how much it is going to benefit me. This technique didn't just transfer knowledge about the scythe to me, but also morphed my body to be the perfect tool to using it. I can't even begin to think how this will help me.
My cultivation is at the 4th Grade now and my body should be close to the 6th Grade. My mental energy has increased to a terrifying degree and my nature energy can spread out to 50 meters with ease.
My meridians are twice as big now which will let me cultivate faster. Not only that but my runes seem to have flourished as well.
My soul…” Akata studied his soul for a moment before sighing in amazement. “It's twice as big now, I don't know what that can do for me but it feels stronger as well.”
Akata sat for a while to recover some of his mental energy, in his lap the scythe was still there. His physical energy was fully recovered thanks to the life energy, only his mental energy was used up greatly since the life energy couldn't replenish that.
Right now he wanted to practice his scythe arts. After sitting for a bit of time and recovering he opened his eyes and jumped up, scythe in hand. He looked out across the land.
It looks barren and dead due to all the life energy that had been consumed by Akata. Withered plants littered the ground, the earth was cracked, and water was displaced. The whole area looked ravaged.
“Hard to believe that I caused all of this. It's a good thing this is a barren island at least otherwise people could have been seriously hurt.” Akata took a deep breath. “Well since I'm stuck here for two months I might as well train.”
Akata stood tall, scythe in hand, and took a deep breath. He held the scythe in one hand and started to spin it around. He grabbed it in two hands and held it aloft in the air. He swung it downwards and the wind parted ways for it. The way he wielded it made it seem like the nothing obstructed his swings. The wind moved alongside the blade making his movements look fluid and smooth.
“It’s not as forceful as a sword and not as flexible as a spear, but it seems to bring the best of both of them. The way of the scythe is meant to expel the energy of the world. The energy of life, the energy of wind, the energy of blood, it takes that energy and forces its way through it, to make sure that it doesn’t impede me. The scythe allows me to cut through anything that I don’t see fit to be in this plane of existence, whether that be the body, soul, or mind, all of it can be cut through.” Akata, as he harnessed the scythe, felt as though the scythe couldn’t be stopped as it swung.
“This is a weapon that is on a different plane of existence. It is way more profound than any other.” As he swung the scythe around he felt that it contained many mysteries hidden within it. “No wonder Lord Dullahan’s intent was so profound and great. And that intent was simplified, I definitely have to find the complete version of this technique.” Akata couldn’t help but be amazed by the scythe and Lord Dullahan.
After a few hours of familiarizing himself with the scythe he sat back down and laid the scythe on his lap. He didn’t go to his other techniques but picked up the World Omen of Lord Dullahan and began reading more of it.
“There are still some fighting techniques that I can use in here. It would be a waste not to look into it and use them for my use. Even though most of these are meant to be used in assassination, I’m sure there are some skills that can be used in a frontal battle.” He flipped through the pages, stopping periodically to comprehend some of the skills in it.
After a while Akata was midway through his reading of the book. He let out a long sigh, “There’s so much in here. Just off of this alone I feel that I can hold my own against anyone. Yet these aren't nowhere near the level of the scythe skill. These alone aren’t going to increase my cultivation base any further. I need to finish comprehending all these techniques in order to fully train.” Akata’s eyes glowed with determination and he went to the next skill.

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time.
