《The Wizard's Obsession》The Witch's Grimoire (8)

Vincent looked at the scenery as the thoughts about the great magic war ran across his mind. The journal had given him a glimpse of the true strength possessed by the strongest armies and beings. His roiling emotions calmed down slowly and he enjoyed the moment of leisure without any worries or thoughts distracting him.
Vincent saw Alba following Isabell excitedly and asking questions. The young witch was making grand gestures as she spoke about who knew what. The thought that the witch might be a bad influence for the naive Alba began bugging his mind and a little worry made its way into his heart.
"What are you talking about?" Vincent asked as the duo came near him.
"I was just telling Alba about all my epic adventures as a witch." Isabell answered with a smug look on her face.
Vincent's face warped into a doubtful expression. He didn't think that the girl had gone on any adventures at all, an epic adventure would be far from the truth. "Hmm really? What kind of adventures?"
Alba cut in and began speaking with great enthusiasm. "She fought with a dragon over a treasure chest and survived. Then there was that one time when she rescued a caravan from the clutches of an evil warlord and also that incident where she headed to a port city to subdue pirates who were wreaking havoc."
The girl hadn't even heard of much stories and the made up tales of the young witch fascinated her to no end. It boggled Vincent's mind when he thought how such obviously fake stories managed to fool her.
"Did she how you any proof that her tales of adventures were true?" Unwilling to pop the bubble that was uplifting the young girl's spirit, he decided to subtly hint to her that the witch as bluffing.
"Yes, she showed me the ring which allows her to breath fire. She took it from the dragon when they were fighting. I wonder if I will ever get to see a dragon." Alba answered full of excitement and longing.

Looking at her innocent expression, Vincent decided to let the witch keep up her fake facade and not tell her that the she got the ring from the hut they had looted just yesterday. He directed a contemptuous look at the witch who looked the other way and pretended to not see him. Exchanging some short words with Alba, he headed back to his room. After listening to the tales of the young witch's epic adventures, he felt like he could read the journal about the great magic war without being surprised too much.
"9th November 1119
Both our forces have been trimmed down to less than half after yesterday's fight. Hundreds of elite wizards as well as witches and warlocks perished in the battle. I got caught up in a 6th circle spell of a wizard but managed to survive. I don't know if I am lucky to be alive or unlucky to be forced to participate in this cruel war for longer. I even thought for a while yesterday that dying would have been better. Few witches that I know are still alive and I don't know how many more I will get to see fall.
Lady Elena seems to be preparing to head out to battle in the next clash. I pray that she will succeed in defeating Nibel and bringing an end to this horrible war.
May the moon bless the lady."
Vincent was left with heavy heart once more. Tens of thousands of people had died in every clash but the war showed no signs of stopping. He got curious as to what could have led to such a bloody conflict among the wizards, witches and shamans. Sadly, there was no mention of any reason for the war in the journal.
"11th November 1119
The lady and Nibel fought for the first time today. They fought far away from our battlefield but I could see brilliant flashes of light and black fire clash every now and then. The aftereffects of their exchange was in no way inferior to that of the clash of Balrog and giant golem. Their battleground had literally turned into molten lava because of the heat. I cannot fathom how potent their spells were to be able to evaporate part of the lake and melt the nearby lands.

Unfortunately, both the demi gods injured each other and no victor was decided. Only a quarter of both the forces remain standing. The war council also decided that the next clash would be the very last. We have almost run out of sacrifices to replenish the life energy for Balrog and we still don't know how much mana crystals the wizards still have.
The council got worried and asked the lady if we should prepare to retreat. Her confident answer put everyone at ease. It seemed like she had the upper hand in their bout today.
May the moon lead us to victory."
It looked like the war was going to reach it's end soon and Vincent jumped to the next entry immediately.
"14th November 1119
We lost the war. And it looked so favorable for us too. I don't know what to write anymore.
Nibel allowed the lady to destroy his legendary armor in exchange for an attack on the Balrog. The flaming giant was melted by the demi god's light spell. It would have just healed in normal case but we had run out of sacrifices and it had no life energy to maintain its existence on this plane. The Balrog died but the lady took advantage of the fact that Nibel no longer had the protection of his legendary armor to burn his left arm and leg.
Everything was fine until then. The Balrog had died but our lady was still in a fighting condition. She could deal with the giant golem without much trouble. Nibel retreated under the protection of the golem and victory would have been ours as long as our forces triumphed theirs.
We were filled with confidence as we had the numerical advantage. The number of gold rankers were almost equal in both the forces and our moon priests numbered 17000 while their truth seekers numbered less than 8000. It should have been an overwhelming victory for us but 3000 of our forces got melted by a ray of light. Their flesh turned into liquid and stuck to the armor they were wearing which too melted not long after. Following the source of the light, I saw Nibel floating above the truth seekers heads as his limbs grew back slowly. A week or two should have been the minimum time required for even a demi god to regrow his limbs. It shouldn't have been possible but I saw the man regenerate his limbs which had been burnt to ashes by the lady in less than a minute.
His mere presence made our moral plummet. I don't know who it was, but he dropped his weapon and fled. Looking at the lone figure running for his life started a chain reaction and our entire forces scattered without any cohesion. Lady Elena who was suppressing the golem made her escape after witnessing our unorganized retreat.
The wizards and their truth seekers followed us in pursuit while chanting 'Lightbringer'. Listening to that moniker makes me gnash my teeth in anger but I don't have any power to oppose him.
I survived somehow but most of our forces and kin didn't make it through. Few of us are still alive and we have decided to live in hiding. We don't know when they will come for us if our identity is exposed."

Join our heroine Enru on her journey in a world where humanity lives in perpetual light and warm while their enemies, the spider beings called Araxin, live in perpetual darkness and cold. Just because they live in the darkness and cold though doesn’t mean the Araxin want to stay there forever however, and this time their bid for the Southern half of the continent looks to be shaping up worse for humanity than ever before. Every ten years the planet nears its second sun in such a way that the Northern half of the continent warms and thaws and the Araxin enter a period of explosive growth, before always attempting to assault the humans in the South. Through events that you will need to read and discover yourself, sixteen year old Enru ends up vital to the survival of humanity, but can she succeed? In a world full of humans, dragons, giant intelligent spiders, trogs, behemoths lurking in the deep, magic, politics (can’t forget the politics) and more, what wonders await you? NOTE: This is my very first attempt at writing ever. Not just my first attempt I am showing people or my first attempt that went anywhere, but my first of any kind. I welcome constructive critisism and I know my grammar is not always the best. If something is majorly bothering you please leave a good comment or review on it rather than just a 0.5 rating and saying I suck. NOTE2: The main character will be gaining power that is, if used correctly, well above the standard for her race however I plan to implement it in such a way that she does not end up being crazy over powered and able to end every fight at her whim. She will struggle, she will lose sometimes and there will be loss along her journey to save her race. There will be no harem and I am unsure if there will be any sex scenes or even romance as this is my first story and I am not confident yet at being able to write that properly. So if you came here for the standard royalroad super OP guy that flies around having sex with every female character he meets, this is not that. Update Frequency: As this is my first story and I am still in the early stages, I cannot say how often updates will be. I lead a very busy life and this is a new way for me to relieve stress. I hope to be able to put out a few thousand words every few days at the least. Enjoy the story! PS. Cover was found on the website thedailybell.com, they did not source where they found it. I rotated and resized the image.
