《WAKIAGARU》The Winged Blade

Heaving herself up and breaking the surface of the water, Liandra gasped for air. For a moment she hung, simply catching her breath after nearly drowning, headless of the battle not far off, or the hot flames still on the surface of the water where pieces of the ship floated.
The smoke was thick. It burned her throat. She coughed hoarsely as she gripped the dock. Liandra screamed in frustration as she hauled herself up.
She lay on her stomach, catching her breath.
The ship… it’s gone. How are we going to get the Emperor out of Mikuma?
She looked up, but couldn’t see far due to the thick haze of smoke blowing over her. She couldn’t tell what was darker in shade, the smoke, or the sky. She got to her knees, wiped her face and trudged along the docks until she made it to land.
She slowed, still wobbly on her feet. As the smoke cleared, her eyes widened in shock.
No! Not possible!
The Emperor’s guard was in tatters. Her knights were still alive, but men lay dead and scattered. Some cried out in grief, and Liandra knew their Imperial Highness had been assassinated.
“What has”—she coughed into her plated forearm—“happened here!”
Zandersan came forward. “Assassin,” was all he said.
Liandra surveyed the group of men, the Emperor’s body in the arms of Masaru, the crown prince. The mage was there. Evidentially he had survived the destruction of their only ship.
“We move back to the Western Temple,” she commanded.
Yorikana, a pained look on his face, ran to the Knight Commander. He pointed at the battle lines. “We may not have to,” he said. “The enemy. They’re retreating.”
She turned. Of course they are. They’ve succeeded in their mission.
But turning back to the prince, she knew that this wasn’t over. “Where’s the Princess?” Yorikana didn’t answer. He seemed distracted. “I said, where is the Princess, man?”

Coming too, the Mikuma general turned and pointed farther up the supply line. “Over the hill.”
“Pull our forces back,” she told him.
The mage approached, breathing heavily. “I have something to tell you.”
“Later.”
“Now.”
She paused for a moment as he walked off out of earshot. Liandra sighed, then she followed. “What is it?”
“There’s another ship.”
Instantly she felt her spirits rise. “Another ship? Where? How do you know this?”
He raised a hand. “It’s hidden.”
“Tell me where it is,” she demanded. “We must get the royal heirs out of Mikuma!”
“I’ll tell you where the ship is on one condition.”
“We don’t have time for conditions, mage. If you have a ship, you damned well better tell me or I’ll—“
“I said I have a condition.”
She narrowed her eyes. “Fine. What is this condition you speak of?”

Goburi was a goblin, a very poor goblin and now that she was dying that meant one thing, she could not even pay the toll to cross into the afterlife. Goblins worshipped gold, gold watched over them and Goburi had never earned or lost a mote, finding herself to be something of a heritic. Like most descisions in life it had felt like the nobler pursuit at the time, but with the darkness closing in, she realized how terrified she was. Even if she had died in debt, the great elusive glimmer in the depths would have put her soul in a new body, bringing with her the debt and some vague memories. Another chance to die in the black. Goburi's last thoughts were dark specters of regret chasing themselves in circles of thought until she prayed for it to be done. She really had no idea where the souls of goblin heritics went, it had never really happened before. A new dungeon was born, a crystal of pure magic containing a soul that failed to pass to the afterlife. As it gained awareness something else came through that was never supposed to be there. Memories of a workshop, and an uncomfortable need to earn gold.

As a man with nothing to do gets shot in the right lung (because the heart and head are over used) by a burglar because his volume was to loud on dark souls get found by the wandering soul of Duke Seath and gets shot back to another planet for reincarnation. What will he do? Will he go mad like almost every other Crystal sorceror? Will he get the dark sign? Who knows not even me because I made this idea in about 30 minutes.

The Seventh Scourge of Altez has robbed countless peoples of their freedom, homes, and hopes. The Archon's twisted Dream deprives the land of its defenders, returning them as twisted monstrosities that cut down former friends and family with glee. The Alliance's campaign against his tyranny has failed, with former allies turning to his banner in hopes for mercy in his new domain. At the final hour, with any hope of salvation dwindling day by day, a legendary armory was rumored to have been uncovered. Within this ruin lies the very relic that had been used to slay the Fifth Scourge in ages past, one that ancient texts tell could only be wielded by a true warrior. Yet the one who ends up wielding the blade would lead all to question their understanding of what a 'True Warrior' is.

During a political ambassador's routine transit through an artificial wormhole, the wormhole's generator is sabotaged and explodes. Who, what, and why are not so high on the priorities for Zenith, the ship's AI, as having found itself rapidly plummeting through an unknown and unidentifiable world's atmosphere at extremely high velocities is a more significant threat to the biologicals on board. ...Well, it would be, if they were still alive. It's still a significantly threatening situation to itself, however. And the world itself... seemed to be a household for threats of its own. Life was reliant on its System; one that Zenith was denied because of its nature as both an otherworldly being and as something that had no life of its own. Perhaps that last bit was a terrible, terrible underestimation on the part of this System. Perhaps even Zenith could claw meaning for itself from the remains of a horrid accident. Auth Notes: I'm honestly not sure on some of these tags. The MC will never have access to the System, but there are perspectives from those who do. I'm not certain if high/low fantasy specifically apply, as it's a portal fantasy where the laws of our reality still apply but there are additional aspects/energies/powers. The existence of this is spurred from my desire to see more of the artificial side to an artificial intelligence in action. The portal fantasy is used as an element to create a solid barrier between the MC's artificial intelligence and the other characters in the form of the System. This is only a half-measure, though, and will be reinforced by the AI having an entirely different method of thinking, and also distinctly remaining an AI. Not to throw shade at other fictions of this type, but, well, I made this to fill a gap I felt needed filling.
