《America Appears in Another World》Chapter 10: The Nobles are Coming

The white house was busy as ever as its been over a week since the initial world transfer. However, despite such a period, there was still mass frustration and work that had to be dealt with. As the secretary of state was making his way towards the oval office, he could hear staff and aids working.
"What do you mean he was in France at the time!? Start recruiting more staff then!"
"Sorry, could you be more specific when you said weird bears were sighted north? Were they red or blue?"
There was chatter everywhere and staffers walking around. It was the most chaotic John had seen the white house, even after the initial election. New committees had to be formed and staff had to be hired to cope with the world transfer and its new load of problems. However, now was not the time to be thinking about that John thought.
The president would not normally call me over unless it had high importance. Of course, right now everything was of high importance John thought. However, he could not get over the fact that he had absolutely no time to do anything. "I just got back from Guam for crying out loud." John thought remorsefully.
John entered the oval office and was greeted by numerous heads of departments and the chairman of the chief of staff. It felt like a repeat of the initial day of the world transfer.
The president spoke "Okay people! Its been nearly a week since the initial world transfer and we are already struggling. If we cannot even do this for a week, I can assure you we are going to have a nasty wake up call a month from now. However, I did not call all of you here for a lecture, there are some important reports that need to be made."
Since a certain level of security clearance is needed for some types of information, throwing this type of information outside of the White House is risky, especially considering the state of the country right now.
"Secretary of energy, I believe you have a groundbreaking report after getting information from the diplomatic delegation sent to the Kingdom of Astra?"
"Yes Mr. President, according to the information gained, we can tell that this world has something fundamentally different from our other world. That is, it contains magic apparently."
"Apparently? You mean to say the same type of magic like from fantasy?"
"Yes, as the name suggests, it is really fascinating and can do a wide range of things such as seemingly allowing fire or water to appear out of thin air!"
The room started to become unsettled. Magic is real now? What are their uses? Can they be used as weapons? How will this affect everyday life? Everyone in the room started to talk amongst one another as they discussed the ramifications of magic appearing.
"Secretary of Energy, can magic be used by anyone?"

"From what we can tell, Magic can only be used by possessing Mana vessels which can allow a user to collect Mana. These vessels are apparently really expensive and thus the number of magic users is limited."
Everyone in the room gave a sigh of relief. If Magic were easy to use, chaos and anarchy would ensue in the U.S for sure. If there is a requirement such as that, then the government can heavily regulate their uses.
"Looks like for now, there won't be problems regarding their use in the U.S then. But secretary, this obviously cannot be your full report."
The secretary of energy smiled. He looked quite excited. Something very uncommon to see in government officials.
"Mr. President, I don't know if anyone in this room has realized it, but the appearance of magic itself has broken some laws of physics. In the realm of harnessing energy, this has large ramifications for wielding and using energy. Normally, fire cannot just appear out of nowhere, its simply impossible, but now magic makes the impossible possible! There could be hundreds of ways to harness energy if we could explore the uses of Magic power!"
"So, are you saying our oil problem is solved then?"
"Not completely. We still need to carry out the adequate research required to harness this energy, however there is an interesting thing I found out from the Kingdom of Astra. Princess Dianna, can wield something like a miniature sun!"
"How do we know this? I assumed the King wouldn't tell us this without reservations."
"Our navy had reported that many ships suffered severe burns and many of the prisoners said that the huge flames busted out and molten lava flowed out. That could have been plasma, something that isn't found naturally unless it's in the sun!"
The room was startled. Everyone knew what this discovery meant. If they could figure out how to replicate that miniature sun, Fusion technology might not be impossible. Fusion has been researched methodically for over seventy years and maintaining a fusion reaction for a couple of seconds is still quite difficult. With magic and that miniature sun, we might be able to make a breakthrough and create clean and limitless energy.
"Department of energy, we will get a committee formed to consider your proposal, however we would need the assistance of Princess Dianna correct?"
"Yes, until the department begins tests, we won't know if its possible to recreate the reaction. Furthermore, our understanding of magic is simply incomplete now. We need help from other magicians."
The president and other officials would have never thought that they would be discussing magic and magicians like this. It was unreal to them. However, they knew that the U.S had to accept reality if they were to survive in this new world.
"Does the Kingdom of Astra have magicians that could aid in our research?"
"The Kingdom of Astra has a sort of Church like institution that teaches and cultivates talented magicians. From what I heard, they are quite important as they project national prestige and strength. If we can obtain their help, we could speed up our research and hopefully open new power plants."

"That concludes my report"
"Thank you, secretary. Now, the chairman of the chief of staff, I believe you have some important matters to discuss?"
"Yes Mr. President, as you all know since the initial world transfer, our military forces have been thrown into disarray. However, despite the tragic loss of the military's personnel, we still have miraculously retained our navy as they were all near the U.S before the transfer at the time. So our naval defense is not something to be worried about at the moment. However, the rabid bears up north have proved to be somewhat more difficult than expected.
The rabid bears are quite large and aggressive. They have already knocked down many portions of the fence we put up. I suggest we take immediate action to send more troops towards the border up north to combat the bears."
"Just how many? Duration?"
"I suggest mobilizing at least 10,000 troops towards the border. Duration, unknown"
Everyone was shocked. That was not a small number of troops. Considering the armaments and weapons 10,000 soldiers would have, it would be a staggering amount. In comparison, there was 70,000 troops in the middle east combined. If 10,000 troops were deploying, the situation must be dire.
"Is the situation that dire Chairman?" The president asked.
"Although the situation has not become terrible, we should ensure that none of those bears enter any of the states. Just one report came out that a herd of them got through the barrier and sent a small-town packing. Luckily, some soldiers were on route and was at the town at the time of attack, however nearly 13 civilians died from the rabid bear herd."
"Is it because these bears are influenced by magic?"
"Our intelligence suggests that the bears are not conventional living animals. Once they die, most of their body disappears, except for a purple crystal. This crystal is one of the Mana mediums for using magic."
The president understood the ramifications. Not only are the animals dangerous, but if people tried to hunt these things and got these unregulated crystals, then random magic wielders could appear. Right now, the president was not too keen on letting random people wielding Magic or Mana.
"I will allow for the militarization of the northern border. If 10,000 is inadequate, inform me and I will allow for more forces to reinforce the border. In addition, I will establish an executive order to buy any Mana crystal from the public."
However, the chief economist spoke up. "Mr. President I would not suggest doing that."
The president looked at the economist. "Why is that?"
"Because unless you want people to hunt these things, buying up the crystals at a price would only incentivize people to try and hunt these things."
The president thought about it. He only wanted to prevent the crystal from entering public hands. Putting a price on it would certainly incentivize hunters from the nearby states to try and hunt these things which could lead to more deaths.
The president was still sitting and thinking about it. It was not the time to allow the public to hunt these things.
"Never mind then. I certainly do not want to create a market for those things quite yet. Now, Mr. Chairman, I don't believe that was everything correct?"
Everyone was already tired and stressed from the talks. They forgot that was not even the main issue!
"Yes Mr. President, unfortunately, our intelligence shows that the Astra Kingdom has fallen into a civil war."
Everyone thought to themselves and shouted, "Tell us that first damn it!" Everyone was clearly more stressed than before. Rather, most of them would have wanted to hear the good news from the energy department last rather than first.
"Do we know the cause?"
"There is a myriad of factors at play. The food shortages, the feudal system, decentralization, magic, family dynasties, opposing factions. Could be any of those things. However, what we do know for a fact is that the western part of the Astra Kingdom has effectively rebelled and now the eastern region is fighting against the western region."
The room became tense again. They had just established relations with the kingdom, and now they have descended into a civil war.
The president spoke. "This was going to happen eventually as they interacted with us. Since it was inevitable, at least it happened now before the U.S had fully shared its technologies."
Dealing with a medieval kingdom was quite easy in terms of warfare. However, if this war had occurred a few years into the future, who knows how destructive it could have been. The president would rather have them rebel now than later.
"What is your advice chairman?"
"I will advise that we send a military force to stop the western regions expansion. If we do nothing, thousands will die, and many will suffer as there is no treaty on warfare or human rights."
The establishment for rules of warfare have been only established in the modern era. To say that warfare before was deadly was an understatement. Most people during this time would die fighting in wars or disease. It was an astonishingly common occurrence.
"I think the choice should be obvious here then. However, where will the front be?"
"Here Mr. President"
He pointed on a map of the kingdom which laid between the western city capital and the eastern Royal city capital. The battle area titled Church of Cultivation.

His eyes had turned bloodshot and his hands shook with rage. “The first thirty…” “Shut up!” Genzo bellowed “How dare you help these disrespectful gaijin?” Flecks of spit and madness flew from his face, his fist raised ready to strike. But Emi did not flinch, instead she was about ready to continue when Yuma Takeuchi interrupted her. “Uchida, please,” her sweet sounding words could melt ice. “I think we will have a better chance of getting home if we all work together.” When she glanced up with her sleepy looking eyes at Genzo Uchida he deflated visibly. “Were not getting home.” Uchida said coolly. “Group summoning, large, that puts us in the 60 series. No one came to greet us after five minutes of arrival. That leaves scenarios 68 and 69. In scenario 68 there is something that binds the large group together; they are all classmates or a single family. But thanks to the gaijin” he spit out the word “I think we are scenario 69 with no way home.” Ikko Inoue’s eyes went wide, while Katsukno and Hayata started muttering to themselves. Tim took on a serious look and rubbed his scruffy chin. Emi maintained her stoic expression while trying to find something to refute. McKenzie glanced at Randall and giggled. Randall took the prompting of his teammate and followed up by approaching Genzo. “Uh, so we are in a sixty-nine?” “Yes.” Replied Genzo with the seriousness of someone who’s life was about to end. McKenzie covered her mouth and snickered. “You and me, were stuck in a sixty-nine situation?” Randall pushed with a grin. “Yes, we are all stuck in a sixty-nine scenario together!” Genzo retorted in anger. McKenzie fell on her butt laughing. “What the hell is so funny?” Demanded Genzo, whose face had turned red. “It’s a problem with the automatic translation.” Retorted Tim. Randall, who seemed unable to quit started in again “So, about this sixty-ni…” Genzo interrupted Randall with a swift punch to the face. But, because of their height difference it was a bit of an uppercut that left Randall rattled. Tim and Ikko moved to step in between the two, but Genzo showed no further hostility. Instead he just stared at his clenched fist with such intensity it grabbed the attention of the room. “I unlocked a skill.” He said bluntly. ***************************** This is not a light novel, but people who like light novels should enjoy the themes of this book. ***************************** A Map of the Region

Moonblood
Five moons rise over Evanir, each in her own cycle, and each moon is also a god, one of five sisters. Many gods create spirit attendants and companions, brought forth fully-formed. Long ago, the moons worked together to create a lineage that are, instead, humans transformed by the mingling of blood. They intended them to be long-lived and to draw their strength directly from the light of the moon who chose each individual. The five sisters had different goals in mind – one wanted it to be a blessing for scholars and artists, to give them more time and fewer physical distractions; another wanted them to have an animal form, different for each, to keep them more in tune with nature so they could serve as guardians of the wilderness. There are drawbacks to their children having human lives and personalities before being chosen: not all share the goals of their divine mothers, and some choose to put their gifts to darker uses. Those carrying the blood of one woman, fleeing the corruption in search of a quiet life, take a different path. -=-=-=-=- Moonblood isn't so much a novel as a series of adventures of varying length. They involve a core group of people, which does grow over time. They take place in a fairly low-magic world, but despite that, our core cast are directly connected to the moons and have various abilities, including limited shapeshifting to a single individual animal form. As with all my work, unless gender, orientation, or other aspects of sexuality are explicitly stated, I suggest not making assumptions. Probably most significant, I think, is a major trans character who appears about 80K words in - no spoilers, just a note for those who care about that one way or the other.
