《Mistbound: Eternity》8. A Fleeting Warmth
Advertisement
“Man, due to his nature, is afraid of the cold and the dark. And so, to kindle his heart, he seeks warmth from others. As ever-so-fleeting and transient it may be, he seeks it, insatiably”.
[We have been on the road for almost three days.]
[We have taken 131,233 steps and counting.]
The sentient being said.
For the past few days it had been talking constantly, taking note of every single thing it encountered, ranging from an ant to objects like wheels. Almost like a newborn, it was as if everything was a foreign concept to it.
[131,244.]
Thanks to that, the 100 miles distance seemed like an eternity to Beowulf.
They had rested four times at the side of the road to recuperate, although the being insisted that it needed no rest. And to top it all off, he refused to carry Beowulf’s burlap bag and gauntlets, saying something about pack mules.
[131,287.]
And even if Beowulf wished to stop hearing its voice, he couldn’t. He had tried stuffing his ears, but of course it was of no use, since it was communicating directly to his consciousness.
[131, 299.]
“Can you please stop?” this was the 7th time Beowulf had asked it to stop counting.
[Why?]
“Because I would appreciate a moment of peace and clarity”, tiredness seeped from every fiber of his being.
[Noted.]
After leaving Morvest, he had taken the elevated path, his destination was the Stronghold of Entradel. The elevated paths were built during Mountaliya’s prime, the common men and traders had complained about travelling through the mist and sustaining high losses in the past. So, a solution was proposed.
Sometimes they seemed like a work of wonder, they were mapped out in such a way so that the mist didn’t reach them and they maintained high altitude. And if there was a slope in the path between two high points, a stone bridge-like structure connected them. Although, mountaliya was a naturally mountainous region, so low altitude was indeed rare to come upon if you were actively avoiding it.

It was almost noon, and a pleasant wind was blowing. Ruffling his hair and flowing past his ears, making a slight howling sound. The swaying of trees and small plants and shrubs alongside the road made for quite a serene sight to behold.
[I fail to understand why you have to travel to this place called Entradel, when there were other towns near Morvest.]
Not even one minute.
It couldn’t stay silent for even one minute.
Its question was certainly valid, if not for the fact that he had already tried to answer that question several times before, each time resulting in a failure. He had tried to explain how he was a wanted man in many places, and Entradel was not one them.
As he was injured due to the fiasco in Morvest, he needed a place where he could recover peacefully. And Entradel seemed to be the optimum choice for that.
[I have observed you, and I can conclude that you are, in fact, not evil. So, there is no basis for you being wanted by the authorities.]
Azlan tried to think of a way how he could explain that its opinions didn’t mean jackshit in human society, but that was a nigh impossible task. This whole shenanigan had started about 35 miles ago, when they saw a wooden post, which was for providing directions.
The snow leopard insisted on heading towards the nearest town, it wanted to observe human towns and culture; while Beowulf declared that it was either Entradel or they should part ways. The being reluctantly had to choose the former, as it had selfishly appointed Beowulf as its guide after all.
[Beowulf, are you paying atten- what is that?]
“Hm?” Beowulf followed the snow leopard’s line of sight.
He could barely make out a windmill in the distance.
Azlan let out a small, barely discernable sigh of relief.
They had reached the stronghold of Entradel.

March 16, 2021 - Hiatus note: I will come back to this story! I'm really struggling with it, though. It's been a number of years and I kind of forgot what the original outline was. I still remember the main path, but not any of the details, because I stupidly didn't write an outline. Progress is being made. I'd like a very decent sized buffer before I start posting again. Don't want to get hopes up only to immediately disappoint! ----- Amy Barnes, an aspiring chemical researcher, finds herself dying from cancer. One of her most desperate prayers is answered in a way that she'd never dreamed possible, and she finds herself living a new life as a dungeon. Warning: Violence, morbidity Cover: Taken from here, courtesy of www.pexels.com by photographer @tookapic. Author's Note: I've read some dungeon core stories on here, and they've tickled my fancy. I've thought up a whole story, start to finish, and thought it'd be a blast to put it into words. Other than the violent and morbid aspects, this story is suitable for children. Aside from the vocabulary, that is. I will avoid the temptation to have any cursing, sexuality, or gore. Excessive gore, I suppose - it is a dungeon story, after all. I’ll do a little research from time to time, but this story will not have a great deal of rigor. I’ve made Amy’s knowledge comparable to my own for that reason. There’s a few things she knows more about than I do, and a few things that she knows less about. Unlike me, she doesn’t have access to Google - it’s a non issue for her to be more knowledgeable than me, on occasion :P This story does not use the same magic system that I’ve used in either Sorcery in Boston or A Summoner’s Confession. This one is mostly intention based, and designed to be easier access for people who are more used to the idea of, “It’s magic, therefore it works” kind of thinking. Do note that Amy is, in most senses of the term, overpowered. This goes along with the usual dungeon core stories. She’s not more powerful than other dungeons per se, but she does have knowledge and intelligence that puts them to shame. I thought about doing this in a LitRPG style, but systems take balance, and I wanted this to be pure fun to write. This story was inspired from a few sources. Despite the title, it wasn’t really inspired by Of Mice and Men, though some of the themes match. Rather, I’ve taken inspiration from a few dungeon core novels on Royal Road Legends for the main idea. Many conventions of dungeon core stories have been perverted from the genre, however. I’ve taken my usual science-loving self to town to play around with the powers, and I can only hope you have half as much fun reading this as I have had writing it.

Gray's Crucible
“The value you have brought to trade is immense, more than a thousand fold what any other traveler to Crucible has ever produced. More than even I produced during my journey.” The old man paused for a moment here, seemingly reluctant to continue. After a few seconds he begins again with weariness creeping into his voice. “As the Messenger of Crucible I have received the value of your life. You shall be awarded a body with potential equaling the value you have brought to this place in accordance with the laws of the higher realms. Now you shall depart for Crucible, but first; I, Jaze, will give you some advice.” The old man, Jaze, he had named himself paused a time. Time enough that Gray began to wonder if he was still present, when he suddenly continued in a low and serious tone, “You will undoubtedly have great potential Gray of Earth, but it is still only potential. What could be is not necessarily what will be. If you step foolishly in my world, if you can not live up to the potential you have bartered for, Crucible will crush you mercilessly and tear away your very soul.” A thought, cheerful and light was heard from Gray before his presence was sent rocketing away like a shooting star. “I’m looking forward to it.”
