《The God of Lightning》Chapter 5: Knocked away

Think! Astra racked his brains.
Aiming at its eyes won’t work again now that the ogre was aware of him.
Astra considered the reach of the ogre. The tree that it held increased its attack range by another 10 meters for a total of 15 meters. Mid-range battle would be risky. The safest play would be staying 15 meters away from it and blasting long range spells.
“ROOOOOOOOOOOAR!” The ogre yelled and charged right at Astra.
Shit. No more time to think. Astra fired off fireballs, windballs, and waterballs one after another.
The fire barely burned the ogre. The wind cut apart the ogre’s skin, but not enough to bleed. The water splashed apart as if it was a water balloon.
Despite his spells having the size of boulders, it couldn’t do any real damage to the ogre. The intensity of his spells weren’t strong enough. He needed to make his attacks stronger.
The ogre was three meters away from Astra.
Dang it. Astra swore in his heart. He had spent too much time firing off magic spells and didn’t have enough time to leap out of the way. Astra thought back to Fausto.
“First time for everything.”
Astra created a ball of wind in each of his hands and fired it at the ground to the right of him.
Using the recoil, Astra blasted himself out of the way of the ogre.
It was Astra’s first time using this move, he had copied it from the man in white.
Astra tumbled on the ground after the leap and roughed himself up.
The ogre charged into a rock wall and was stuck.
Astra didn’t think that it would get stuck too long with its immense strength.
Sure enough, the ogre only took a couple of seconds to get its head out of the wall.

Astra gathered his resolve. It looked like he had to fight in close combat for him to do any real damage. An ogre was still a living being and all living beings have vital spots. Astra didn’t have any weapons so piercing through its head or heart would be nearly impossible.
His water spells didn’t seem to do anything but his wind and fire spells actually did a miniscule amount of damage.
Astra sprinted towards the ogre.
The ogre raised its arm and swung the tree horizontally.
He ducked down to dodge the swing and continued sprinting.
“Wind slash! Fire slash!”
Astra swung his hands as if they were swords.
During his training, Astra had learned that he could change the forms of mana and produce something else other than balls. Astra had condensed the fire and wind elemental mana into a sharp and crisp slice, acting as a sword. This gave the attack more power and accuracy.
A beam of wind and fire headed towards the ogre’s ankle.
The fire beam had weakened the skin allowing the wind beam to easily cut through it.
The ogre felt a tinge of pain and looked down.
“GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!” The ogre seethed in anger.
It could not believe that it had been wounded by such a small animal.
Astra had planned to immobilize the ogre by aiming at its ankle but due to its strong defenses, he had to continuously attack it, slowly whittling it down.
The ogre swung its tree around in a crazed manner.
It was as if it was trying to swat a mosquito.
Astra dodged every single swing by a sliver. A single hit from that tree would knock Astra unconscious.
The young boy continuously fired off beams of fire and wind at the same ankle.
“ARGH!” The ogre snarled.
A stream of blood came from the ogre’s ankle.
The swings of the ogre sped up as it became enraged.
The sudden change in tempo had surprised Astra and a swing had caught Astra in a bad position.
Shit! If Astra took that head on, it was unlikely that he would survive.
Think! Think! Astra focused on the tree.
WHACK!
Astra was knocked 30 meters away.
The ogre knelt down and rested his bleeding ankle.

Apex Predator
Earth is a fairly small place, but it's all Bath has. It's the only home he's ever known for all of his 500-or-so-million years of life. One day, Bath realized his treasured Earth was being drawn into the next mass extinction ahead of schedule. So, fascinated by the humans and their quick rise to power (after all, setting off a mass extinction is a pretty sizable achievement), what's a nearly all-powerful, somewhat bored, morally ambiguous, savagely violent, shapeshifting alien entity to do other than assume the form of a human and do some front-line investigating? Little did Bath know he would soon stumble upon a mysterious human organization with a gate leading to planets eons away. And that's just the beginning... A story with aliens, intergalactic space travel, mind powers, and an abundance of adventure! Author's note: ON HIATUS! Hello and thank you for reading! Constructive criticism and grammar-policing are both appreciated. Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are complete at 1271 pages! Part 7 is in progress! If you've ever read any other web serials, you might've noticed that authors get better with time (that is, their art or writing improves). Wutosama of Metaworld Chronicles noted that the first 20 chaps are always a mess. This is also the case with Apex Predator. The first two parts (ranging just under 30 chapters, or 161 pages) are absolutely subpar. While I have edited them as of 7-10-18, they require a rewrite, which is currently in the works but not complete. For a sample that gives insight into what the latter ~80% of the story's writing style is like, check out chapter 56. Vote for Apex Predator on Top Web Fiction! The Apex Predator Discord is here. Cover: original work done by me, the author, caerulex.
