《The Abandoned Disciple》Chapter 23

10 years later…
News of the Roaring Dragon Sect had spread throughout the continent. Those who were affected by the black mist now lived their lives as mortals and told the story of what had transpired. Those who heard, immediately went into action to find the man who held the Dao Seed. However, no matter where they looked they could not find him. Eventually, they gave up and the supreme sects began dividing up the territory that used to belong to the Roaring Dragon Sect.
The legend of the black mist eventually faded and was now rarely talked about.
At this moment, a young woman was buying groceries for dinner from the local market.
“Granny, give me 10 pounds of pork!”
“Coming right up!”
A smiling granny took down a roasting pig and began to chop and package it.
“So much meat, are you two having a celebration?”
“Yes, actually……”
The young women whispered something into the granny’s ears.
“My, my, a baby, how wonderful!” The granny grinned from ear to ear.
“Shhhh, I haven’t told him yet. I want it to be a surprise tonight!”
“Haha, I’m sure he will be happy. Congratulations Mulin!”
The two waved good bye as Mulin continued to shop around the market.
This young woman is called Mulin and is the daughter of an elder from a powerful sect. At the age of 19 she eloped with her true love against the wishes of her parents. She, and her now husband, now resided in a small town far away from that sect.
“I should also get some vegetables, but…. I’m too exited! I want to tell him now, he can just eat meat!” She happily skipped back to her home which they had built together.
She was just about to burst open the door when she suddenly heard the moan of a women.
“It…It can’t be….” Her heart raced, but she quickly calmed herself. “I must be hearing things; my husband would never do such things to me.”

However, a second moan could be heard.
Her heart suddenly accelerated. She silently opened the door and made her way to their bedroom. A small opening was made which allowed her to peer into the room.
Her eyes instantly constricted as her bag of groceries fell on the floor.
The thump scared the man and women who were currently in the embrace of each other in the bed.
The door opened to show a crying Mulin.
“You….how could you…?”
The man sighed as he got up.
“Mulin I….”
A slap aimed towards his face but he caught it before it hit him.
“Don’t be childish Mulin, let’s just talk this out.”
“You said you loved me….. you said we would be together forever…..” She did not even look at his face and stared at the floor.
“Sigh…. Mulin, love is not so easy that you can merely put it into words. Yes, I loved you at the time but after we moved in together I realised that my love for you was merely for the moment. We just aren’t compatible and lately, I find that it is hard for us to live together.”
Her heart felt like it was breaking. Her panting became heavier with every breath.
“I think we should split up.”
Everything seemed to go dark.
“I…I…I gave up everything for you. I abandoned my parents, my sect, and my best friend just to be with you. Go...GO DIE!!!” She turned and ran away, leaving a trail of tears.
She ran into the forest and did not stop. She continued to run until she made it to a cliff.
She stood at the edge as she let out a piercing scream. Her tears flowed endlessly and before she knew it night came.
Her tears had run out and her throat was hoarse.
She stood at the edge of the cliff and looked down to see where the ocean met the cliff. There were a few jagged rocks down there which would kill anyone instantly if they were to jump off the cliff.

She looked at her belly and patted it softly.
“I’m sorry, you would probably have grown up to be a splendid person who everyone would want to be friends with. But I….I’m just not strong enough…” her face was dull and looked as if there was no more life in them.
She stood at the very edge of the Cliff. If she even took one step, her whole body would drop down.
She began to think back to all the people she had left.
“Mom, Dad, Shion……” Her face was full of regret. “I wish I had chosen you at that time.”
Suddenly thunder raged all across the sky. As if time suddenly stopped, everything around her stood motionless and silent.
A rift appeared from the sky as large ancient black dragon slowly descended.
Mulin was frightend and took several steps back, tripping and landing on her butt.
The black dragon looked around to see Mulin. It shrank down to a smaller size so that it was more convenient for them to talk.
“Do you want a second chance?” The black dragon asked. His mouth did not move but his voice still resounded in her ears.
It took her a moment to grasp what was happening.
“I-Is senior talking to me?” she asked cautiously.
“Yes…..”
“W-What second chance do you mean?” from her tone one could tell she was still a bit scared.
“A second chance to do things over, to choose the right path, and to not regret the choices you make.”
Her eyes instantly widened by his statement.
“You mean…. Go back in time?”
“In a way…”
“Please, I would do anything for a second chance.” She kowtowed towards the dragons with new tears falling.”
“Get on.”
He gestured for her to get on his back. Mulin, who was ready to give up her life, quickly jumped on this dragon’s back. Although it all seemed so fantastical, even if it was a dream, she still wanted to get on.
“Hold on….” He warned her.
His ginormous body rose into the sky before it dived down into the ocean.
His speed was incredible, reaching a speed where he could probably cross half the world in several seconds. Although his speed was incredible, Mulin was protected and was not affected by any external factors.
The dragon passed through the ocean in an astounding way. Soon it reached an enormous ice berg which seemed like it would last for all of eternity. However, the dragon did not change its course and smashed through this ice berg, breaking it into many pieces.
Its eyes suddenly glowed bright and it let out a fearsome roar. A spatial rift suddenly opened and the dragon and Mulin went through it. Ripples of space and time echoed out and caused great tremors throughout the world.
After the dragon left, the rift began to slowly close.
The water current left from the speeding dragon was incredible and it dragged many things involuntarily towards it.
One such item was a pair of ice statues which depicted the face of a man lovingly looking at a woman in his arms.
As the rift was closing, the ice statues were swept up by the currents and made its way towards the rift and passed through just as it closed.
Just like the rift, the current settled and everything returned back to normal.

End's End
Crow Tempora is an optimistic country bumpkin who knows very little of life in the heart of the world's cities, however behind his easy smile is a stony determination to achieve his goal of accomplishing the impossible- one that he can only reach by winning the Sieve, the largest competition of young Mystics the world has ever seen. Famous across the entire world and loved almost as widely, Gemini Menza has never known a single day of anonymity in her short life. Like most magical prodigies she has spent her years on guard against powerful Immortals attempting to use her as a tool, unlike most she is uniquely gifted and burdened with the position of being the single most magically prodigious individual of her generation- perhaps throughout all of history. Entering the Sieve not to work for victory, but to collect it as a boring chore, she soon finds herself shocked by the difficulty of her tasks, both inside the contest and out. After all, she was also given the privilege of joining at a younger age than anyone else. Machiavellian manipulator Unity Eden is growing tired of the tasks forced onto him by those who control him, unfortunately he also happens to be controlled by the leaders of the largest empire the world has ever seen. While he has little hope of wriggling his way out of it, he intends to make his entry into the Sieve as damaging to them as he can. While most are fixated on the events of the Sieve's stages, intently watching the young and talented as they go head to head to find out who holds the title of strongest, Karma Alabaster has her eyes on the powers behind the curtains- the endless machinations of the Immortals and their servants. Caught between enough crisscrossing schemes to form a spiderweb, she must use every ounce of her not inconsiderable mind to keep herself from playing into another's hands... all while solving a mysterious and seemingly impossible murder. The winds of change are blowing in Bermuda, and only one person will shape them. Cover art by: Nova @no_no_nova on tiktok @no_no_no_nova on ig THREE NEW CHAPTERS POSTED EVERY SINGLE WEEK.

2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
