《God's Mulligans 2》Chaper 3 - Space Invaders

Dago looked up at the sky. “Does that look normal to you? Or are there more ships up there than there was earlier?”
Straight shielded his eyes from the sun and looked up at the ships. What once had been faint black silhouettes were now getting bigger, taking on more definition and color. “I’m not sure there are more. I just think they are getting closer.”
Dago concentrated on the ships. Straight was right. They were getting closer, noticeably so. It was as if they had all been chilling in the sky and then decided to come down at the same time. Dago had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. “Those don’t look like our ships.
Straight was also getting that same feeling. “Do those ships look pink to you?” Nervousness set in as Dago looked around. Everyone on the beach was stopping what they were doing and now looking up at the descending ships. “I think we need to get out of here,” Straight said.
Dago looked over his shoulder. There were more ships inland. He watched in horror as they moved back and forth, canvasing the sky in a grid pattern. “Okay, but where the fuck are we going to go?”
“I say we grab a cab and hop on the first ride off this rock.”
“Sounds good to me.”
They headed toward the resort parking lot, leaving the beach goers gawking up toward the sky. As Straight had hoped, there were a couple cabs just waiting for tourists who needed a ride. They hopped into the first one they came to. The driver was peering up through the windshield at the encroaching ships.
“We need to get,” was all that Straight could get out.
The driver peered into his rearview mirror at his new occupants. “Holy, shit. Hospital it is.”

“No. We need to get to the,” Straight tried again.
Don’t worry, buddy, we’ll be there in no time.
“Spaceport!” Straight shouted.
“What?” the cabbie asked.
“Spaceport. We need to get to the Bellair spaceport,” Straight finally said.
The cabbie paused.
“No. You’re in shock. You need to get to the hospital,” the cabbie said very slowly. “You have been severely burned and need medical attention.”
Straight and Dago looked at each other. Straight was confused, but Dago having the same view as the cab driver caught on.
Dago looked at the driver placard with a picture of the driver and the name S. Holmes, and wondered if the driver’s parents could really be that cruel? “He’s fine,” Dago told the driver.
“He is most definitely not fine,” the driver replied.
“He’s a negroling, negrotian?” Dago said.
“Negronian,” Straight rolled his eyes.
“Holy shit, I didn’t think you guys ever left your planet.”
“We try not too,” Straight said with a hint of malice.
“Well, shit man. It’s an honor to have you in my cab.”
“Thanks, but we really need to.”
“Hold on let me just take a quick picture.” The man fumbled around on his passenger seat, then gave up his quest. “What am I saying? It’s all being recorded. Okay, so where are we going, hospital?”
“Spaceport,” corrected Straight.
“Oh, that’s right. Not burnt, just…” The cabbie gave a little nod and thumbs up into the rearview mirror. “Got it.”
As the cabbie took off, Dago and Straight settled into their seats.
The drive took forever, which was weird because the resort wasn’t that far from the space port. And he didn’t think they should need to get off the freeway even if there were a ton of assholes clogging up the passing lane for no other reason than to slow down traffic. Seriously, there were more people driving in the passing lane than in the right lane. Get the fuck over, people.

Far Strider
A college student finds himself transported into a strange land with burgeoning magical powers, and is taken in by Ned Stark. Will he sink or swim in this medieval society, and will he ever get home? ====================== OC-insert without knowledge of Game of Thrones, new planeswalker. Slow power ramp. Second crossover: Star Wars (around chapter 39). ======================= As a note, I started this as a speed writing challenge to myself. The challenge was successful, and I managed 100,000+ words (as well as some character sheets in excel and such) over 10.5 days. Then I had to stop and let my hands recover from their burgeoning carpal tunnel syndrome. The story currently stands at around 150,000 words (or ~550 RRL pages) over 54 chapters; expect a chapter a day until I've caught up with the backlog. The focus of this story was not quality writing, and that hasn't changed. I mostly use it as my semi-guilty "I need to write something, but am not focused enough to write something good" story. Expect self-indulgent writing in general, and a bit of OP (or, well, more than just a bit if we're being honest), especially later in the story as the protagonist matures into a more full-blown Planeswalker. But if you're looking for something with a power-ramping protagonist romping around the place, something you'd be a bit embarrassed to admit liking (I know I am) but like anyways (and come on, this is RRL, so that probably describes just about everyone here who actually has shame), then this may be a nice bit of mental junk food for you.

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
