Jade turned to Darol and said ‘I’m going to evolve now, do you need anything?’ Darol sent psychic signals indicating confusion and said ‘What does this ‘evolve’ entail?’ Jade said ‘When we evolve our race changes and our stats go way higher than what they were before we evolved. You don’t evolve?’ Darol replied ‘No, I was always a Champion Arachni from when I was born till date. My stats have increased and so has my Rank but I’m still a Champion Arachni’.
Jade was intrigued and wanted to ask many questions but he held himself back and asked ‘How did you guys increase your Rank? There were no Rank 21 or 22 monsters in Nigeria when you guys attacked me’.
Darol sent another signal of confusion tinged with curiosity and said ‘We just have to gain en-code and eat to increase our stats. When our stats increase our Rank increases, isn’t that the same for you?’
Jade sent a signal of realization and said ‘I was Rank 11 before I killed your parent. I would like to ask more questions but I need to evolve now, it could take a while so do you need anything?’
Darol said ‘No, I can wait till you’re done’.
Jade teleported to another room in his portal storage that only had air; no gravity, no platforms, no light, just air. He said to his IP ‘I want to evolve now’. His IP said ‘Acknowledged’.
Jade’s vision drowned as he entered a trance. His IP showed a screen.

Jade stared at the list in surprise and said ‘After all I’ve gone through, I’m not number one? Even if I’m not number one, I’m still not number two or three but number 5? How?’

There are those like number 1 and number 4 who just had too many things going well for them compared to you. Your suffering is not what is graded but how great you become at what you do. You can still increase your grade as long as you are alive so don’t worry too much. And grading isn’t everything, if you’re good at something that no one else is good at it will not show in your grade but it will give you advantages.]

Jade thought about it and choose not to worry. He asked ‘Are you the one that spoke to me after I escaped the Infant Ocean Master?’

One of the places where life goes on is just west of Seattle. Surrounded by the waters of the Puget Sound is an island. On that island is the Blake Island School of Magic. A decade ago it was known for producing some of the most talented awakened in the world. That reputation was hijacked by the wealthy corporate elite who now park their teenage children there. And since it's a boarding school, their parents mostly forget about them. Three young people, who are certainly not wealthy or elite, are chosen this year to attend this school of magic in hopes of revitalizing their reputation for talent. One from the ash drifts of the Puyallup Barrens, one from the most densely populated slum hive in the world and one from prison. This is their story. -- This story is set in the Shadowrun universe. If you're not familiar with Shadowrun, it mostly tells the stories of deniable mercenaries called shadowrunners in a cyberpunk dystopia. Instead of telling another story solely about shadowrunners, this story will tell the tale of young people navigating a world that is indifferent to them at best and actively hostile at worst. Shadowrunners will be in the story and we'll see them operate, but they won't be its main focus. This story originally began in 2017 as a passion project and continues to this day on the Somethingawful.com forums. The unedited version is over a million words strong.
